My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

Best - Either Greece or a cruise around the Adriatic

Worst - Mexico or Gibraltar

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 29/01/2019 06:38

Worst was Tenerife and magaluf , and Tenerife stank of piss (i was 18 and even then I could see it was grim)

Best Thailand , Japan and Sicily

GreggsSausageRolls · 29/01/2019 06:43

Bit worried about our anniversary weekend break away in August now.... to Dublin! Confused

Subla2401 · 29/01/2019 06:49

Best - New Zealand (road tripping around there, especially the South Island, was incredible.)

Worst - Cyprus (overcrowded beach and pool but enjoyed some of the day trips we went on, away from the busy resort).

ballroompink · 29/01/2019 06:57

Places I've loved: Crete, south-west France, Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Salzburg, Brazil, Cornwall, Northumberland.

I went to Berlin when the weather was awful and didn't plan the trip well so would go back because I know so many people who love it.

We have had a couple of lovely holidays in Wales despite its bad rep on here.

Dublin was a bit of a let-down. Just not very interesting tbh!

Worst: Costa del Sol. Nothing to do and just full of Brits eating fry-ups at the cafés. We did drive further afield and go to Ronda which was lovely but the interesting bits of Andalucia were really too far away to get to.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 29/01/2019 07:10

Its not too late to cancel Greggs August is ages away.

If you really want to go to Ireland why not try one of the other places recommended on this thread?

Pretamum · 29/01/2019 07:42

Best: Paris - I absolutely loved it although I do agree with comments here about rude people and waiting staff. But I could tolerate that for the food and the beauty of a lot of it. Also loved New York, but it is also lovely to leave and not be in the chaos and noise of it all. Florida too- purely for the fun of the theme parks. I'd also recommend South Africa- Kruger, Cape Town and the Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschoek. Such a stunning country, so much to do, great value for food and the wines are incredible. Definitely worth overcoming any reservations you may have about the crime.
Worst holiday: Gran Canaria / Tenerife. But to be fair we were young and stayed in the clubby touristy areas - I'm sure if we went now to some of the less touristy areas we'd find something to enjoy.

Absofuckinglutely · 29/01/2019 08:20

Worst - Malta, bloody awful. In fairness was 20 years ago. Also one of the very underwhelmed by Dublin and can't see what the fuss is about.

Best - South of France. Heaven on earth.

m00rfarm · 29/01/2019 08:21

Albufeira is not the Algarve. Please don't judge the Algarve (or Portugal) on Albufeira! There are many beautiful places in the Algarve - something for everyone, whether you are looking for Michelin restaurants or places where the locals live. The views are stunning, and the weather (usually) magnificent.

But - my best holidays were Seville (we visit regularly as it is only a few hours by car from the Algarve), Porto, Anguilla, New York, Venice, Barcelona, Barbados, little place in Spain called El Rompido

Places not so keen on : Rome, Dublin, St Lucia

Itsagamerchanger · 29/01/2019 08:24

Best: lake bled, Slovenia & Italy
Worst: Malta & Turkey

Itsagamerchanger · 29/01/2019 08:25

And Majorca. Totally underwhelmed.

m00rfarm · 29/01/2019 08:30

Oh - TUrkey was terrible - how could I forget. And Aruba was gorgeous.

Satsumaeater · 29/01/2019 08:34

Best: Jersey, Jersey and Jersey. And Germany especially Hamburg. I also really liked Singapore but can't get on with the climate.

Worst: Spain (Seville and Madrid - both interesting cities but I just can't really get on with Spanish eating really late at night. And my purse got stolen in Madrid which didn't help. Really friendly people though).

Perth in Australia is overrated. Though we were there in their winter and it wasn't great weather.

I've never had a really awful holiday as I don't go to places I think I won't like eg I can't imagine I'd like Tunisia or Egypt. Maybe closed minded but I'd rather go somewhere I know I will like if I am giving up valuable annual leave and spending lots of money.

I liked Dublin - it is expensive but very interesting. And the people are lovely. I do think people being nice to you makes or breaks a holiday.

Scotland - both best and worst holidays. When the weather is good, there's no point being anywhere else. But we did have one holiday there when ds was about 18 months old (so not a great age for a relaxing holiday anyway) and the weather was pretty meh.

hibbledibble · 29/01/2019 08:35

Best: Israel and the dead sea

Worst: Egypt. I became very sick there due to gastroenteritis

Satsumaeater · 29/01/2019 08:35

Greggs, the last time I was in Dublin was for an anniversary break. It was great. There really is loads to do and great places to eat. And you'll be relieved to escape from Brexitland no doubt.

Satsumaeater · 29/01/2019 08:38

In terms of cities, Vienna was always my favourite but we went to Copenhagen last year for the first time in a long while and I think it may have stolen the crown now, though eating out is very expensive (ticket prices weren't too bad).

CherryPavlova · 29/01/2019 09:07

I love Paris and have never found the people rude or unhelpful. Pottering down the Rue du Bac, the roof of Gallery Lafayette, lunch overlooking the Seine, all lovely.

I’d agree El Jem in Tunisia is incredible - Rome on steroids.

caperplips · 29/01/2019 10:20

Gregs I lived in Dublin for many year and visit several times a year and I would be delighted to recommend things for you to see / do / eat / drink / stay if you are interested.

There is huge negativity on this thread about Dublin which is a pity as it is a really great city with tons of things to see and do.

Please let me know if you would like any pointers

GreggsSausageRolls · 29/01/2019 13:28

@caperplips that would be fab thanks. We're going in August....

caperplips · 29/01/2019 14:51

Greg it would be my pleasure!
Do you know yet where you are staying?
What sort of things do you like? Art? Museums? Cafes? Bars / restaurants - these are the sort of things we like to see and do.
How long are you going for?
I would be delighted to suggest a loose itinerary for you for the time you are there.

Queenofpies · 29/01/2019 15:06

Best Grand Canyon, truly awesome, Moscow.
Worst Paris. Went on honeymoon. The people were rude. Went to see Nortre Dame and the area around it was full of prostitutes and dirty old men pushing pornographic cards advertising them into my husbands hand.

Prosaic · 29/01/2019 15:07

I feel a lot of people's 'worst' experiences have more to do with choice of accommodation or unlucky circumstances (like bad weather) than the place itself. Although for example I'm not a huge fan of Paris, given the right mix of accommodation and circumstances I'd probably like it a lot better.

Also, not liking one resort town in a country does not make that whole country a write-off. Give it another go, try a different town or city and you may have a completely different experience Smile

Christmasfairy07 · 29/01/2019 15:11

Best - South Africa
Worst - Can’t really think of a bad holiday

YouBelongHere · 29/01/2019 15:32

Best:
Japan - visited Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka but Tokyo was definitely my favourite. I'd return there in a heartbeat any day.

New York - felt a bit overwhelmed at first but ended up loving it.

Greece, Crete - just a beautiful place and we had amazing weather.

Lithuania - was pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see and do.

Worst:
Paris - not necessarily a bad city I just felt it was a bit overrated and after the first trip I'd seen everything I would've liked to have seen

Luxembourg - again not necessarily a bad place but only went for one night and felt that was more than enough.

I was hoping to go to Hong Kong later on this year if I can afford it but I've seen a few rating it as their worst! Is it that bad?

icannotremember · 29/01/2019 15:36

Best is a toss up between Puerto Pollensa and Scotland. Such different reasons for loving them both.

Worst, the day we took out of our summer holiday two years ago to go to Southwold for the day. Pretentious, overpriced and totally underwhelming.
