Best and worst place you have been on holiday to?!

My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

I’d agree El Jem in Tunisia is incredible - Rome on steroids.

Aslemma,

It's the preservation of the structure too, the area with all the steps outside is pretty spectacular also. Sadly though, it is deteriorating markedly and quickly. We saw no change from 2005-2012, but then in 2014 I was aghast at how much had changed :(

It's the largest outside Italy, and best preserved too.

What I adore about Tunisia is the breadth of history, El Djem, Kairouan (that was really something special - I'm a (non practicing due disability) white british Muslim), Bardo museum in Tunis and Sidi Bou Said in the north Smile

"Also, not liking one resort town in a country does not make that whole country a write-off."

I agree. I have never been to Benidorm and have no desire to visit there, but I wouldn't write off the whole of Spain just because of one resort.

I would love to go to San Sebastian and eat my way around all the tapas bars.

Best:
Mexico road trip
Iceland in the summer
California road trip
Kenya on safari
Tasmania
Cornwall
W. Ireland road trip

Worst:
Off season in Majorca
Cold snap in Andalusia
Basically houses built for summer, all tiled floors when it's cold weather

Part of the reason our holiday in Tunisia was disappointing was because we stayed in a rubbish hotel. The excursions we took were very interesting - Matmata, El Djem, Kairouan, but the resort (Sousse) had problems with its sewage system and the whole place just smelled of sewage. I found it depressing when going out for a meal in the evenings that the only women we saw were other holiday makers.

We specifically chose Sousse because we didn't want to go to a purpose built tourist resort, and thought that we would enjoy looking round the town with its narrow streets and shops, but we only did that the once because the hassle was ridiculous.

And the cockroaches were something else.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 29/01/2019 18:51

Same with us in Egypt - no other women apart from tourists to be seen. And we were constantly pawed over and leered at, hassled and had our body space invaded, even with our husbands there. Just revolting. I'd never set foot back in that dump.

MsTSwift · 29/01/2019 19:29

Egypt is hell on earth for women. Head and shoulders the worst and most horrible country I have ever visited. Advised my daughters to steer well clear - the British museum has a great collection of Egyptian artefacts which can be visited without non stop sexual harassment Hmm

PierreBezukov · 29/01/2019 19:41

I enjoyed Egypt but I was with my husband at all times so that probably protected me.

Someone was asking about Hong Kong. It is a fantastic place. Vibrant, alive, exotic and different culture, English-speaking, great and cheap public transport, great shopping and food and surrounded by beaches, mountains and stunning scenery. What's not to like? You've got to get out of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon though and go a bit further out - try Sai Kung village for something a bit different.

bluetit101 · 29/01/2019 19:45

@MsTSwift

I know what you mean about Egypt. We visited Sharm El Sheikh and even though the hotel was lovely, and the staff were lovely (one woman worked in the whole holiday village) as soon as we left the hotel it was scary. Our daughter was really blonde and the Egyptian men kept trying to touch her hair and kept telling my husband he was 'a lucky man'
Frightened the life out of me. I would never go back there.

Binkybix · 29/01/2019 20:03

Which suprised me as I hate space!

How and why might someone hate space? Grin

Polarbearflavour · 29/01/2019 21:05

I’m booking Malta for this summer as it’s one of the few European places we haven’t been too - mixed reports on here!

Going to Paris over Easter, haven’t been for a few years.

And Australia next month. Grin Never been there but hoping for good things!

I would love to go to Marrakesh but I think the harassment would be awful. Same for Egypt.

Twomonthstogo · 29/01/2019 21:28

I loved Egypt! Been there twice, once as a single female with single female friend aged 18, years later with husband and sister. Found the people incredibly generous and kind both times, yes attention unwanted sometimes but found the culture and the buzz really fascinating.

Nodancingshoes · 29/01/2019 21:37

I loved Los Gigantes, Tenerife - always my favourite holiday memories. Hated Puerto Rico in Gran Caneria. It was a dump and we got harassed and had money stolen by a group of women lurking around the town

MsTSwift · 29/01/2019 21:43

How?! I went to Cairo with a female friend we had a few days before we joined a tour. We dressed modestly and were respectful. Every time we walked down the street in Cairo most men hissed at us or said obscene things. We went to the pyramids and were scammed into paying £30 for a donkey ride (this was 18 yrs about) my friends donkey died with her on it! And she is an animal lover! When we used the pool all the waiters came out and lined up and just stared at us. We ended up reading in our room.

MsTSwift · 29/01/2019 21:48

The Egyptian museum in Cairo was very cool. But on balance not worth it

PierreBezukov · 29/01/2019 22:00

Yes we went to the Egyptian musuem. The best thing in Egypt by far is Valley of the Kings - truly amazing - as was an ancient temple we visited in Luxor. Truly mind-blowing. But as I said, my DH was with me so I probably escaped at lot of the harassment.

We also went scuba diving which was extremely well run and very safely done, with a nice, experienced guide - overall a worthwhile experience.

PeridotCricket · 29/01/2019 22:16

Had one of my best holidays ever in Egypt last year. With husband so maybe less hassle. Stayed in Cairo independently and loved it, amazing city. The pyramids weren’t the highlight though...

IndigoSpritz · 29/01/2019 22:30

Best: Norfolk Broads. Boating holiday one summer. Just one morning of rain. Otherwise a week if blue skies and sunshine. Utterly laid back.

Worst: North Wales. Creepy abandoned villages, bickering parents and a lot of rain. An awful lot. Never again.

BillyAndTheSillies · 29/01/2019 22:41

Best is a toss up between Havana and Reykjavik. Total polar opposites but both places will stay with me for a long time.

Worst would be Santander in Spain or costa teguise in Lanzarote.

user1511042793 · 29/01/2019 22:42

Best Euro camp in France particularly la garangoire.

Worst. St ives.

SimplySteve · 30/01/2019 03:21

Bit unfair Kirsty. DP and DD aren't religious at all, and attracted attention from the men. I've not been active religiously for over 15 years now, and it's certainly never been announced or obvious when we've been there. If anything I'd say it's our familiarity with the country having been there so many times.

shiveringtimber · 30/01/2019 03:52

I used to live in Tunisia and it was paradise. I was there for three years as a child / pre-teen and I still miss it. This was mid-70s so obviously many changes. The people were so friendly and hospitable...

shiveringtimber · 30/01/2019 03:56

Best holidays depend so much on the weather, where you stay, who you're with, who you meet.

Zoflorabore · 30/01/2019 04:07

Best- hands down Kusadasi in Turkey, amazing place. Followed by New York.

Worst- Benidorm, Tenerife and Paris.

Was very underwhelmed with Niagara Falls as a destination though the falls were out of this world. Surrounding area was meh.

MsTSwift · 30/01/2019 09:29

Always baffled by the slagging off of Paris! Have you actually been there? We house swapped for a week wandered through so many of the different areas of the city so beautiful
