My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

Best- southern France, Italy

Worst- eurocamp France, Paris, Tunisia

CurbsideProphet · 26/01/2019 21:38

Best: Cascais, Portugal.

Worst: I haven't had any terrible hols, but I didn't really enjoy Mauritius due to the taxi drivers continually taking us via fake designer outlets and the feeling that hotel staff were being exploited.

Cornwall, specifically Crantock was beautiful, quiet, unspoilt and the beach is just the best. Soft, clean sand, warm but shielded enough you don't burn but not a wind trap either. Little rock pools for the kids. Bliss.

Worst was Dumfries. Boring. Just spectacularly boring when I went as a kid. Every local we met banged on about the cows there. Just so full for a teenager. I truly love Scotland but wouldn't go there again.

Other than Butlins we've generally liked our holidays, we've been to Tunisia and loved it, also Egypt, Morocco,Jordan, India, China and New Zealand, as well as numerous trips to the States. Of them all I think the 7 weeks we had round New Zealand was the favourite although we love the South West of the USA, especially the Balloon Fiesta at Albuquerque, a magnificent sight, hundreds of hot air balloons taking off together. Off to Florida next month, Disney and Universal here I come, 70 is no age!

Applesaregreenandred · 26/01/2019 21:41

I think if you are holidaying in the UK , particularly in places such as Wales and Lake District you have to expect to get a certain amount of rain!

My worst holiday has to be Montenegro. We booked a 'villa' right by the sea - and it was lovely inside but what the photos didn't show us was the view of the ship yard and that we were about 5 miles from the resort we thought we were staying in with no proper shopping facilities or restaurants locally. It also tipped it down with rain 5 out of 7 days - and even now when we get really heavy rain we call it Montenegro rain.

Favourite places - most places I've visited in Italy particularly Lake Garda and Venice. Very underwhelmed by Milan though.

To the poster who said one of her worst places was Birmingham- why even would you chose to go there for a holiday?

explodingkitten · 26/01/2019 21:42

Best- Tasmania
Worst- Hong Kong

WhiteDust · 26/01/2019 21:42

Best: The Dordogne, Cotswolds, Pembrokeshire, Canada (too many beautiful areas to list)
Worst: Malta, Tunisia, Cornwall

tillytrotter1 · 26/01/2019 21:44

@tillytrotter1 that's a haven site now. The swimming is great and plenty of options for food

I'll take your word for it!!! We found a lovely pub along the coast near, I think, Culzean Castle for our escapes.

Worst : Orlando - Overcrowded, commercial, overdeveloped

What did you expect ???? It's like Blackpool or Las Vegas, it is what it is. Little of Florida is good, even the Keys were a disappontment and the Everglades looked like North Norfolk, apparently the over development of Central Florida has had a very adverse affect on the Everglades.

Best: Florence and Venice. Loved Gibraltar but that was work - though I did spend every spare hour walking from one end to another and discovering the most amazing places and history. Full of friendly people too. Loved a holiday in NE Germany on one of the lakes; they were only just getting western visitors and were so friendly and helpful. The lake and beach were beautiful, and the weather sunny.

Worst: any visit to London for friends and museum visits. Dirty, crowded, and only one decent meal all the times I've visited. Shoved out of the way regularly despite walking with a stick, though the friendliest people were in Lewisham where a friend lived.

Redcrayonisthebest · 26/01/2019 21:57

Best: could choose a few, I've generally been lucky with holidays but I do love Malta. Gorgeous weather, friendly people and feels very safe.

Worst: York, fell and hurt myself quite badly with a toddler in tow. Lost, walking through the city centre both of us crying. Me with ripped clothes and bleeding. Nobody asked if we were ok. The two people I asked for help, one refused point blank and the other thought it was hilarious but didn't help.
Don't care how "beautiful and interesting" the city is, I loathe the place now.

Cheerymom · 26/01/2019 22:04

Applesaregreenandred, went to Birmingham as I am not from Uk and it is touted as UK's second city and thought there'd be enough industrial history and art and ...erm Black Sabbath. The whole place was under construction, the canal was blocked off, it was grim, impossible to navigate and characterless.

Redcrayonisthebest · 26/01/2019 22:04

Oh thought of another best, the first holiday I took with my ds was to Butlins Skegness. Everybody I knew did the Hmmface when I told them we were going but we both bloody loved it. Loads to do and the staff were so friendly and helpful.

Burpsandfustles · 26/01/2019 22:07

Lanzarrote made me feel so depressed. I loved seeing the volcanoes etc but it wasn't nice.
I really didn't like the built up areas I found it soulless.

We also accidently went near toromlenous once that was hideous.
Wasn't fond of malaga and hated Puerto banous.

Loved so many places, I think Africa is the standout.... The animals, the magic the people.
Adore South of France and the fairytale Hill top villages, interesting beaches, I dislike boring huge stretches of sand I like beaches with character and basic facilities eg villefranche sur mer, antibes etc.

Didn't like the people but had fab time in salzburg. Will always return to Florence, sienna... Rome and Paris.
Much of Paris appeal to me is the culture and history.
I adore it. Have mostly met normal kind people in Paris!
Love Dorset here too.
One place I found very exciting for our week trip was new York... But I wasn't sure if I would be desperate to go back really.....

notouting · 26/01/2019 22:09

Haven't had any bad holidays but

best - Maldives
worst Barbados, totally underwhelming, least favourite of our Caribbean holidays

ShatnersBassoon · 26/01/2019 22:12

I think Africa is the standout....

You need to be a bit more precise than that for travel tips!

shewholikeslipstick · 26/01/2019 22:21

Worst-Dublin ~underwhelming & Albufeira, Portugal -horrendous food poisoning.
Best-Maldives , Singapore , St Ives & also Lanzarote -Playa Blanca.

shewholikeslipstick · 26/01/2019 22:25

Lanzarote isn't built up in the way that Tenerife is. Even Puerto del Carmen, the most touristy Lanzarote resort, doesn't have high rise hotels etc.
Lanzarote has very strict planning laws...the hotels are all very low rise.

kentparent · 26/01/2019 22:29

Loved Kefalonia, Tuscany, Dubrovnik and Norwegian Fjords
Not a fan of Canary Islands

MrsWicket · 26/01/2019 22:35

Best: Malta and Tenerife
Worse: Turkey. Hated it, hassled non-stop and got ill too. Wild horse wouldn’t make me go back

Ladymargarethall · 26/01/2019 22:39

Best :Australia
Worst: Mundesley in Norfolk. I really don't understand why people love Norfolk.

jacksonmaine · 26/01/2019 22:40

Grin @ShatnersBassoon

LoniceraJaponica · 26/01/2019 23:02

I think Tunisia has been mentioned the most often as the worst holiday destination Grin

Clionba · 26/01/2019 23:06

Tunisian men act as if they've never seen a woman before, and they have the right to grab and fondle at will.

mumtomaxwell · 26/01/2019 23:11

The Lake District is my favourite place in the world, also adored NYC and had a fab holiday in Canada - mostly in Toronto and surrounds.

By far the worst place I’ve been on holiday was Malta! Filthy and too many ‘Brits abroad’ types. Never again!
