Best and worst place you have been on holiday to?!

My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

Lesvos: it was our one real disaster of a holiday and the only one where I wanted to come home early.

The island is lovely but the resort we stayed at wasn't. Long (and at times dangerous) walk to the beach as you'd to zig zag through narrow streets. The apartments were all supposed to be studios, the brochure (it was a long time ago) didn't mention the family apartments that had been built or that other hotels could use the pool. And I got bitten by every flying critter going.

The Euro had just come in so prices had gone up and a lot of the Greek tourists had gone elsewhere. Bar owners were weeping into their ouzo at how quiet it was in high season.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 26/01/2019 23:19

I’m in Tenerife atm
I’m having a fab time but have just come for some sunshine and to chill out, with no agenda at all
It’s just as I expected, but cleaner, I would definitely come again this time of year but prob not in the height of summer.

Applesaregreenandred · 26/01/2019 23:20

@Cheerymom that makes sense if you aren't from UK. We live about 20 miles away and agree with the grim and difficult to navigate!

Unfinishedkitchen · 26/01/2019 23:23

Worst by a country mile was Tenerife. The rudest most inhospitable people I’ve ever met coupled with the worst British tourists. They deserve each other.

Had too many good holidays to fairly state the best.

autumnnightsaredrawingin · 26/01/2019 23:24

Best: Cornwall, absolutely love it and go every year. Caribbean, warm and sunny and beautiful sea. Dorset, beautiful coastline and always have happy times there.

Worst: Mexico, dodgy resort with dodgy (now ex!) boyfriend, I got so ill there.

Dayzedandconfuzed · 26/01/2019 23:25

Best - Japan, Iceland and Denmark

Worst by a long mile - Playa del Carmen in Mexico. Just horrific.

Sooperkat · 26/01/2019 23:27

Best, Iceland, Marrakech, Sri Lanka, New York and Austin
Worst, Brittany but it did rain the whole time, and I didn’t love Dublin either or Nashville

Knittink · 26/01/2019 23:32

Best: New Zealand. Worst: no worst place that I can think of. My only bad holidays have been bad because of crappy weather

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 26/01/2019 23:41

Best was Florida, worst was Cyprus. I’m not even sure why I just didn’t enjoy it. We had been to Portugal 2 years before and I absolutley loved it, I just really hated Cyprus 😩

giveovermypreciousss · 26/01/2019 23:41

Best was our trip to Bruge.
Worst was Lanzarote-Playa Blanca. It was cery dull

username58483 · 26/01/2019 23:45

Best - South Africa, Lapland and The Seychelles
Worst - Amsterdam. I think we went with too high expectations as everyone told us how brilliant it was. Was completely underwhelmed and the river cruise literally sent me to sleep.

belleandsnowwhite · 26/01/2019 23:46

Best - NYC, so familiar and I felt so at home. I spent 13 days there and didn't get bored, we went to The Times cultural events, Broadway, visited book and music stores, cafes. I didn't manage to do everything I wanted to do in almost 2 weeks!

I don't really have a worst but didn't think Paris was that great and not somewhere I would rush back but still glad I have visited.

HollaHolla · 26/01/2019 23:56

I find it hard to say any holidays were bad... even a hellish, wet week camping with a couple going through a breakup, was tempered with gorgeous green landscapes, and Celtic history. I have had a grim few days a few times, but often as part of bigger trips, which has meant we could move on. Most of these have been in areas where there’s been a lack of culture/nature/scenery/etc., and where the people haven’t been friendly and welcoming. Other dull/grim places have been redeemed by wonderful people!

My favourites are New Zealand (repeatedly!) 🇳🇿 , Australia (pretty much anywhere, but deffo Sydney, Tasmania & FNQ) 🇦🇺 , Lake Garda 🇮🇹 , Greece 🇬🇷 anywhere, Dubrovnik 🇭🇷, Strasbourg 🇫🇷, Denmark 🇩🇰 , Vietnam 🇻🇳, Bali 🇮🇩, Cambodia 🇰🇭 and anywhere in Thailand 🇹🇭!

LoniceraJaponica · 26/01/2019 23:59

I'm not a big fan of Paris TBH, but both times I was there I was a teenager with another teenage girl and we did feel a little targeted by unsavoury characters.

Bluejeantreefrog · 27/01/2019 00:03

Lots of lovely places I've visited, tend to research before booking, we've been trekking and seen amazing sites. Love the smaller Greek islands, anywhere not a resort. Went for a long weekend in NYC expecting to hate it but I loved it. Worse places was Kathmandu the poverty and hassle by beggars got too much and got horrendous food poisoning. Varadero in Cuba for week after Havana. Beautiful beach but terrible food in hotel and couldn't get any service from hotel staff without tipping first.

RustyBear · 27/01/2019 00:10

Best was Egypt, or at least the Nile cruise - lovely boat, beautiful river, interesting sites with knowledgeable guides.

But the last three days in Cairo, same holiday - not sure I'd say it was my worst ever, but Cairo is dirty, noisy, hotel had seen better days, and the Pyramids were actually rather underwhelming compared with places like Abu Simbel and Philae (though the step pyramid at Saqqara is better than the Great Pyramid at Giza, which feels more like just a tourist attraction without the sense of history I felt elsewhere.)

Somewhereovertheroad · 27/01/2019 00:15

Also really loved camping in a proper tent on Achill Island. the weather was beautiful, which helped.

EugenesAxe · 27/01/2019 00:24

Best was a trip called the Mayan Explorer around Central America when I was in my 30s, pre-children. Tikal was the most awe inspiring place on that trip. Very close second, Canada (BC).

Worst was a trip to the Isle of Wight... although I also hated Dublin! Weather helped shaft those two trips to a large extent.

antipodeansun · 27/01/2019 03:42

Worst: Radisson Blu in Denarau, near Nadi on Viti Levu, Fiji. One of the most popular and highly rated family holidays in New Zealand. No beach to speak of, boring, lots of kiwis and Aussies hanging around pools drinking bad and expensive cocktails, exploited and unhappy workers under smiling faces. Never again.

Best: lots of places in New Zealand (Coromandel, Hokianga Harbour, Nelson) and Croatia (eg Sibenik and Zlarin, inland Istria, island of Losinj) for swimming, walks, cycling, relaxed atmosphere. Farmstay near Mantua in Italy very handy for trips to Lago di Garda and elsewhere in the region - interesting, great food, fun, bought some beautiful stuff. Singapore, Xiamen in Fujian province, China - interesting, fantastic food, easy.

LoniceraJaponica · 27/01/2019 06:52

All those saying that they do their research are probably much younger than me, and forget that it wasn't so easy to do this pre internet.

Our horrible Tunisian holiday was in 1985, and the only information I could find was from the Airtours holiday brochure and a guide book.

Nowadays I can do far more research and use Streetview when shortlisting accommodation, as well as checking out reviews on Tripadvisor and other similar sites.

sashh · 27/01/2019 07:13

Best: Argentina and Uruguay

Worst, holidays with my parents as a teen. The plan was always to get up early and leave, which usually meant leaving about mid day.

Drive to Dover. Cross channel on a ferry and drive through France. Stay overnight in a hotel in a small town, get up and drive all day.

Get to where we are staying, which is almost always the cheapest option so a Studio flat for a family of 4.

Spend most days in the car driving to an old town, look round town, eat, look around again, drive to a wine tasting then back to the accommodation.

Repeat for 14 days.

chipsnmayo · 27/01/2019 07:16

I love Australia but found Sydney naff. Went there nearly 20 years ago for about a week with my ex, boring as buggery - went to the Zoo, Opera House and out to Palm Beach where Home and Away is filmed (my ex was a big fan!). Bondi was the most over-rated beach ever.

I loved Melbourne and Queensland had much better beaches.

New England was amazing, did a road trip Boston to New York.

chipsnmayo · 27/01/2019 07:19

Oh yes I found the Pacific Islands are shit, Rarotonga and Fiji are tied for the worst.

I use to live in NZ (my ex is a Kiwi) - all the Kiwis / Aussies go there for their winter breaks, stay in some shitty resort by an over-rated beach .

anniehm · 27/01/2019 07:20

Alaska is probably my favourite but loved Sri Lanka too, worst, Cornwall camping in the rain

Ladymargarethall · 27/01/2019 07:28

Chipsandmayo I much prefer Sydney to Brisbane, virtually agree about Bondi.
