Hi, ive know my new friend for sbout 6 months through our children and we've grown quite close. She is a Christian and I'm.not, but we both respect each other's views. Last week, she and her daughter came over for lunch and my girl was watching my little pony. Her daughter wanted to sit and watch it to however, she said she doesn't allow MLP because it has magic in it which is against her Christian views (mermaids too seemingly). I switched it to something she was comfortable with despite her saying because it's my house its ok to watch.
I've continued to think about this and believe its a very extreme view and I just dont get it as she allows her girl to watch frozen. My own daughter asked me why magic and MLP is bad and I'm.not happy that this friends, in my opinion, crazy views are seeping into my daughter's conscience.

Other stuff is coming to light too such as having ridiculously unrealistic goals and I'm wondering if she's a fantasist and if I should step back from our friendship. TIA x

echt I don’t think I am an apologist for people hitting children?! I’ve said I think smacking should be illegal. Unfortunately it isn’t, beating your child however is illegal. And there is clearly a difference.

dimsum123 · 26/01/2019 07:50

I could not be friends with someone like this. I do not have any respect for those who believe in an irrelevant fairy story from 2000 years ago and even less for those who try and impose their beliefs and ways on me.

Religion is divisive and a means of mass coercive control.

End the friendship. Plenty more fish in the sea.

About the paedophile thing.

There was an animator who worked on MLP, among other things, who was convicted of possessing child porn. The story has been somewhat exaggerated. Check Snopes.

There was a teacher at my dcs' school who was convicted of the same. Doesn't mean the school was evil.

There are men who dress up as schoolgirls for sexual purposes. Doesn't mean schoolgirls were invented for their satisfaction.

PeppyPiggy · 26/01/2019 08:25

almostfamousme hi, I got his role within the show wrong. What has been somewhat exaggerated? I get the inpression from the specification of his pedophilic crime you have listed that you believe this is better then whatever else you assumed I meant. I’m fully aware that this is what he was arrested for and I am fully aware of what he said about and his reasons for it. You are manipulating this. I never said MLP was evil. Another thing you are also twisting here, saying that men dressing up as school girls doesnt mean school girls were invented for their satisfaction is a silly sentence in itself?? MLP have TWO target audiences, one of them being grown men. This is not comparable to what you said. School girls is not a product with a target audience!!!

I would be inclined to agree with you regarding the difference between smacking and beating but if you read again what OP said, it implies to me more than just a smack. She speaks of “hits her child to the point he has serious behavioural problems” and “children are born with sin and parents should help them get rid of it”

Doesn’t sound like a smack on the bum for defiance to me, sounds much more sinister!

**another Christian friend from the same church hits her child to the point he has serious behavioural problems. She seemingly believes children are born with sin and the parents should 'help them get rid of it.

@ junebirthdaygirl
I don't agree with a previous statement that all Catholics are Christians.

If you want to be really pedantic, the Church believe once you are baptised Catholic, it leaves an indelible mark on your soul. Even if you are no longer a praticising Catholic/ turned away from religion, you will still always be considered a Catholic by the Church.

However, Catholics are Christians as we believe in Jesus Christ.

almostfamousme · 26/01/2019 09:30

PeppyPiggy why assume I'm talking to you? A few people mentioned it. Some of them do appear to believe that MLP is inherently evil.

I wasn't making any moral judgements, just stating a fact.

BettyG66 · 26/01/2019 10:33

I had a brief friendship with a religious nut a few years ago. It didn't last long as I am an atheist born of a Catholic mother and find all religions (cults) creepy and weird. I prefer to take a scientific point of view. All religion does is cause wars and terrorism. I'd back off if I were you OP and especially from the friend who beats her child - who in their right mind would believe a child is born evil.

ralfeesmum · 26/01/2019 10:37

Here we go - religion brewing up conflict yet again. If only I but had a Magic Wand I'd do away with it all......

BettyG66 · 26/01/2019 10:55

ralfreesmum - so would I!

PeppyPiggy · 26/01/2019 11:41

almostfamousme you did not make it clear who you were talking to. Mine was the second most recent comment regarding this, the most recent comment about this was in response to mine. I logically assumed you were responding to this. Your comparison lacked sense, I called it out. What was the fact that you feel added to this? that the animator was only a pedo online? That your kids school teacher was also a pedo?

nakedscientist · 26/01/2019 12:10

I wouldn't respect her views either. They are indicative of stupidity which sometimes can't be helped but does not need to be revered.

I agree. I am also tired of people with odd ideas tagging them to religion and then getting a 'magic' pass to respect. No, I don't have to respect illogical and outlandish ideas just because they belong to X, y or z religious doctrine.

Commonwasher · 26/01/2019 12:20

There is a trend/reaction in some churches against magic incase it somehow makes the dark world of the occult seem tempting. Never heard this being applied to MLP though! And IMO it’s a bit of a simplistic and blinkered view as the likes of Harry Potter has such a strong message of good triumphing over evil, and the likes of the Narnia Chronicles are clearly fantasy/magic stories but actuallu retell the Christian story. Your friend has not tried to impose her views on you as she said it’s your house therefore your rules. If she is not forcing her beliefs on you why would you think she wants anything more than friendship and company? Maybe if she raises the subject you can explain that giving a rounded and realistic view of society helps children grow into teens and adults who make good choices even when their parents can no longer ban stuff!

meercatz · 26/01/2019 12:21

Please report the friend that hits her children OP.

Motoko · 26/01/2019 13:37

Regarding witchcraft (a pp mentioned it earlier in the thread), there's nothing "satanic" involved. Witches don't believe in Satan, as he's a christian concept, so there won't be any "satanic rituals" involved.

The basic tenet is the same as other religions; do no harm. Witchcraft is attuned to nature, and it's believed that things like hexes and curses will come back to the person casting them, threefold. Basically, karma.

It's nothing to worry about.

almostfamousme · 26/01/2019 13:48

@PeppePiggy I was simply pointing out that the fact that MLP at some time had an animator working for them who was into child porn, it doesn't mean that MLP itself has a dodgy agenda. And that it was an animator, not a CEO or a producer or whatever it was that people were saying. I think the truth is important.
