New friend is setting off alarm bells!

Hi, ive know my new friend for sbout 6 months through our children and we've grown quite close. She is a Christian and I'm.not, but we both respect each other's views. Last week, she and her daughter came over for lunch and my girl was watching my little pony. Her daughter wanted to sit and watch it to however, she said she doesn't allow MLP because it has magic in it which is against her Christian views (mermaids too seemingly). I switched it to something she was comfortable with despite her saying because it's my house its ok to watch.
I've continued to think about this and believe its a very extreme view and I just dont get it as she allows her girl to watch frozen. My own daughter asked me why magic and MLP is bad and I'm.not happy that this friends, in my opinion, crazy views are seeping into my daughter's conscience.

Other stuff is coming to light too such as having ridiculously unrealistic goals and I'm wondering if she's a fantasist and if I should step back from our friendship. TIA x

I have no respect for her views - I’m puzzled that anyone would

3WildOnes · 25/01/2019 20:57

Ellyess of course some of it goes beyond what is reasonable and legal. I think if the law was clear and made all smacking illegal then that would help.

AhhhHereItGoes · 25/01/2019 21:01

I'd not have any problem with an adult voicing these views. Bizarre and illogical to me but to each their own.

However, if it was going to confuse or upset my child I may take a step back.

Yes we should teach children about different views but very young children will not understand the difference between believing in God Day and believing for example, Harry Potter is Satanic.

If spoken enough about, my child may start to believe it or fear they may be being corrupted even though they are not Christian, as often in child logic if it happens to someone, it can happen to them or someone they love.

I'd try to keep play dates as outside activities where these views don't have to be tested. Like I say there is no issue with an adult deciding to believe these things, but fear mongering a child would make me uneasy.

Re the comments here discussing whether babies go to heaven (within biblical christianity), there is one clear mention in the bible of what afterlife awaits for a baby. I think it is found in Samuel? King David’s baby son dies, it is made clear the baby is in heaven. I think it’s called the age of accountability or something, that young people aren’t held as accountable. So any christians believing that babies go to hell doesn’t make sense. I’m not expressing any of my own religious beliefs here by the way I have read the bible many times along with the Koran just adding from my knowledge

Catsinthecupboard · 25/01/2019 21:14

She is a nut. I am a Christian and i would not be her friend.

There are several types of Christians. I hope that other Christians, like me, condemn crazy or abusive people. No matter what religion.

I think that the emphasis on crazy Christians strains our credibility and hurts us all.

I am proud to be a Christian. It's part of my upbringing and i believe in the goodness of the religion. However. Evil walks the earth and under many guises.

I have (easily/quickly/without remorse) dumped people who claim Christianity as an excuse to be stupid/cruel/judgemental. I would suggest everyone do the same and ask that we're not all painted with the same brush.

I remember a "Christian" whose daughter told her entire class of 5 year old peers that there wasn't a santa. It was a fairly religious community. Our family was least religious and EVERY mother was outraged.

As a devoted Christian. I feel it's my duty to speak out against crazy, bc they undermine our entire community. It's always the outrageous that garners attention, while peaceful, kind people are ignored. I really believe that they are like bees; there might be 100 butterflies and 1 bee but it's the bee that gets noticed.

Re Unbaptised babies going to heaven

Catholic view is that we don't know but we trust in God's mercy. God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but He himself is not bound by His sacraments.

I must say that I'm incredibly wary of anyone proclaiming that another is going to/is in hell. That is way above our pay grade to judge. Thus the Catholic Church teaches that only the Devil is in Hell.

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/01/2019 21:19

Doesn’t the guy who owns The Entertainer not stock Harry Potter stuff because it is against his religion

Hudson123 · 25/01/2019 21:23

If you know of someone beating their kids I hope you’ve referred to Social Services. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, do not turn a blind eye!!!

Catsinthecupboard · 25/01/2019 21:25

P.s. regarding babies going to heaven or anything else disturbing.

Believe what gives you peace.

My mother studied religions and read many things. Her best answer to me was, "God knows, not us. Part of being a Christian is accepting that some things we don't know, don't believe anyone who proclaims themselves to know THE ANSWER."

I really believe that the Bible is like the sentence whisper game; misinterpreted in places. Some words change, don't translate.

I heard once that the original word was mistranslated and instead of FEAR the word should have been AWE. AWE of God.

Isn't that a game changer?

3WildOnes · 25/01/2019 21:25

Hudson123 there is a difference between beating and smacking! I don’t think anyone has said they know anyone who beats there children?

XingMing · 25/01/2019 21:29

Have not RTFT, but since when were Catholic and Christian separated?

I was under the impression that Catholicism was a version of Christianity? Did I miss something?

Concerningbehaviour · 25/01/2019 21:29

@Happyl
Streetwise Hercules, another Christian friend from the same church hits her child to the point he has serious behavioural problems. She seemingly believes children are born with sin and the parents should 'help them get rid of it.

This needs to be reported to Social Services or the police. Now

Re Catsinthecupboard

“I remember a "Christian" whose daughter told her entire class of 5 year old peers that there wasn't a santa. It was a fairly religious community. Our family was least religious and EVERY mother was outraged.”

Mothers being “outraged” by their children knowing that a man who creeps into their houses and leaves them gifts is not real? You think this is outrageous because you are highly concerned about trivial societal rules, white lies to your kids, silly commercial traditions, keeping the norms. My mother never told me santa was real. I find it far more outrageous that people tell their own children such bizarre lies. I definetly do not spin lies to my daughter about a man coming into the house and leaving her gifts! She knows where her presents are from. None of my family were brought up with santa nonsense and we all did well without it. My dd partakes in the fun of christmas and enjoys it even knowing the truth about It just as I did. Outrage LOL

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/01/2019 21:31

Hudson123 there is a difference between beating and smacking! I don’t think anyone has said they know anyone who beats there children

If we are going to split hairs then snacking their children because without having done anything they need the evil smacking out of them

WhatisFreddoingnow · 25/01/2019 21:34

@XingMing

Catholicism is the original Christianity. Denominations (Baptists, Anglicans etc) split from Catholicism.
Thus all Catholics are Christians but not all Christians are Catholics.

Between denominations, there are varying beliefs. Some key differences are ; the role of Mother Mary and Saints, Eucharist , sola scripta and salvation by faith alone.

Jux · 25/01/2019 21:36

Gosh, babies go to Hell? I thought Catholicism was bad enough with Limbo (which the Pope has decided doesn't exist now - maybe it's full?), but Hell? That's not a nice sort of Christianity.

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/01/2019 21:37

PeppyPiggy No different than being told that a guy called Jesus was the son of God or Adam and Eve were the first humans.
Or if you have a blood transfusion you will go to Hell.

I think Santa is a perfectly fine tradition.

Ellyess · 25/01/2019 21:38

DesertSky PeppyPiggy and everyone on the MLP and "brony"

Just googled MLP and Christianity and immediately found:

www.landoverbaptist.net/showthread.php?t=106084

Written by Pastor J.C. Manning, M.D., Ph.D.

"How My Little Pony destroyed my daughter's marriage."

".....one day, something horrific happened. Something no one saw coming. Something almost unimaginable. My daughter's husband told her he had to confess something to her. Then he confessed to her, with tears in his eyes, that he had sinned, that he had gone astray, that he had become a "brony". At first my daughter had no idea what that meant, but then he started explaining it to her in full and horrible detail. It turned out My Little Pony isn't designed for children at all. That's just a cover. In reality it is an unfortunate ploy by Satan to seduce grown man into abandoning Jesus Christ. The meetings he went to, while neglecting his innocent wife and children, turned out to be "brony meets". These meetings apparently consist of grown man dressing like ponies (!) and having forbidden sex with each other. These "bronies" use social media to organize these meetings to have their Satanic orgies all under the false pretense of all liking the same silly children's cartoon. As if anyone would ever believe grown men could appreciate colored girly ponies. Clearly this is something completely different."

3WildOnes · 25/01/2019 21:39

Oliversmumsarmy she said her friend smacked her child because he didn’t eat his dinner. My ‘friends’ smack their children when they are ‘defiant’. There is too much grey area in the law unfortunately.

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/01/2019 21:40

3WildOnes I was referring to the one who “beats” her Ds to rid him of evil

3WildOnes · 25/01/2019 21:41

I think the Landover Baptist church is a parody site.

Warpdrive · 25/01/2019 21:46

@xingming The Catholic Church, and Anglican teach that if you are baptised, you are a member of that church and therefore a Christian.

The bible doesn’t actually say this though. So those Christians (like me) who follow the bible, don’t recognise the assertions of many who claim to be Christian. We believe that when someone has been born again (had a conversion experience and made a solemn commitment to live with Jesus as Lord) only then can you be called a Christian.

So you see, there are many interpretations. Catholicism is most certainly not the ‘original’ church, the original church was a movement called the way. It’s referenced in the New Testament a few times.

As for my little pony, I would probably avoid too if my kids were young. I avoided Harry Potter and Halloween too. Having had encountered the demonic in my life, I’m probably more risk averse than most when it comes to anything occultic.

Accountant222 · 25/01/2019 21:48

I'm a great one for attracting weirdo's

3WildOnes · 25/01/2019 21:48

I must have missed the post where someone said they know some one who beats their child to rid them of evil. Obviously if someone said that they should be reported to social services.

XingMing · 25/01/2019 21:49

I thought Catholicism was a sub-set of Christianity. So does it matter how one worships?
