DH is in love with the name Bo for a boy. Thing is I personally do not like the other spelling of Beau but have concerns about Bo - can hear kids teasing calling B.O etc. I do like the name though. Would you go ahead with the Bo spelling or are there any other suggestions please?

How about Bo/Beau short for Beauvoir?

JacquesHammer · 23/01/2019 12:52

According to the internet, Beau is short for Beauregard

I love Beauregard. Very “American old south”.

Wasn’t Ashley and Melanie Wilkes son a Beau?

cjt110 · 23/01/2019 12:53

Oh and my Mum's initials are B(First name) O'B(second name) and she never got called BO or BOB as a kid

Heratnumber7 · 23/01/2019 12:54

Not the point of the thread, but you can't call a girl Beau!!

GB54 · 23/01/2019 12:54

Boe?

coffeecow · 23/01/2019 12:57

I know a Harry who was nicknamed Bo (I think a shortening of Haribo which his family sometimes nicknamed him) He gets called Bo now more often than Harry.

I know someone with 2 daughters called Beau and Dolly

GalacticChickenShit · 23/01/2019 13:01

I know a little boy called boag too and he's nn is bo

Boag? nn bogey surely?

Tinkobell · 23/01/2019 13:01

Neighbour has a spaniel named "Bodie"

ILoveChristmasLights · 23/01/2019 13:03

Personally I don’t like it - but as that goes for the vast majority of names, I’d put no weight in that!

IF I wanted to call my DS Bo, I’d put Bodie on his BC.

(I’m in the other camp though, I love Bodie, but wouldn’t use it in case it was shortened to Bo!)

HoustonBess · 23/01/2019 13:04

Terrible however you spell it, sorry

pigsDOfly · 23/01/2019 13:05

Don't know about Beaureguard. But the two meanings generally indicated by the word Beau is a handsome man or a suitor or boyfriend.

UterusUterusGhali · 23/01/2019 13:05

I like it, but I knew a very cool girl called Bo. It'd always assume it was a girl.

Beau for a boy is fine.

tillytrotter1 · 23/01/2019 13:05

Can you imagine a Prime Minister or a Nobel laureate called Bo? No? Then don't use it! I exclude Bojo from the PM as an afterthought.

ninalovesdragons · 23/01/2019 13:07

No

Olivecake · 23/01/2019 13:08

I know several adult males named Bo, a child Beau, and one little girl Bo. Always thought it’s a lovely name but we live in the Netherlands so the B.O connotations don’t exist here.

grumiosmum · 23/01/2019 13:10

Beauvoir is pronounced Beaver.

So I'd probably avoid that one. Especially for a boy.

Porridgeoat · 23/01/2019 13:11

Bea for a girl

delboysskinandblister · 23/01/2019 13:18

No. What's wrong with Matthew? or James?

lottiegarbanzo · 23/01/2019 13:20

It's Belvoir that's pr. beaver (as in Vale of ... and cordial).

I think of the Face of Boe in Doctor Who, which I hadn't realised ended in 'e'.

Personally I'd go with a longer name, to give the child options, as well as because Bo is unusual in the UK and has other assocations.

I have heard it in an American context - Bo and Luke Duke in The Dukes of Hazard. Some American names work better in the UK than others.

Eliza9917 · 23/01/2019 13:22

My dog was called Bo/Beau when we got her, but we changed it as we already had a Boo.

Don't call your kid Bo/Beau.

TheLastSaola · 23/01/2019 13:22

I knew a Bo, who was Dutch, and was just about the most handsome man I've ever seen. Everyone who ever met him fell immediately in love with him.

So it certainly isn't an odd name for me.

There's also a huge range of names where I live (SW London), and having spoken to local teachers, they say that name bullying is very rare from their experience.

Ethel36 · 23/01/2019 13:29

Strongly dislike this name for the very reason you stated... b.o.

AcrossthePond55 · 23/01/2019 13:30

I'm an American, and I don't know why your DH is saying that 'Bo' is the usual spelling for a boy, because it isn't if that's the 'full name' you're giving. The ones I've known have been spelled 'Beau', and it's a pretty rare 'standalone'. It's usually short for something else, ie Beauregard or Beaumont.

I can only think of 3 'Bos'. Bo Jackson (first name Vincent), Bo Burnham (Robert), and BoJack Horseman (cartoon).
