Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

If you take your spider out a walk, then yes I think you should be allowed to take it into a cafe.

You should only take your spider for a walk if you're prepared to pick up its poo though, and promise to bin the poo responsibly and not leave it hanging on a hedge somewhere.

You see a disgusting amount of spider poo on the hedges round my way.

lemonadefloat · 23/01/2019 14:07

I've seen someone take a lizard in once Grin It was on a table.

marymarkle · 23/01/2019 14:08

And remove any webs it spins.

Hazlenutpie · 23/01/2019 14:09

It’s good business as so many people have dogs. I don’t see the problem with allowing dogs when you’re serving food. My dog and many others, lives in the kitchen.

Yokohamajojo · 23/01/2019 14:13

SapphireSeptember in our local pub there is a man who regularly bring in his parrot, who either sits on his shoulder or on the bar getting petted! not just dogs! Have also been in pubs with resident cats

LimpidPools · 23/01/2019 14:13

I like pocket rats. They make excellent portable pets.

I always quite wanted one. Wouldn't mix too well with the terrier these days though.

I don't much care what your pet is that you want to bring with you. It's live and let live as far as I'm concerned.

Biancadelriosback · 23/01/2019 14:34

There is a great pub in Newcastle (and I'm sure many other places!) That has a whole separate menu for dogs including a doggy beer. So you can order your food and food for your pooch at the same time and eat together. It's ridiculously popular, often very busy and quite hard to get a seat in. It makes me very happy to go there.

I've seen twatty, entitled non-dog owners who flip out when a dog does something dog-like. In a dog friendly cafe, a lady shouted at me and my dog because he couldn't get comfortable. It was hot so he was also a bit panty and it was annoying her. She had just spent the last 10 mins rearranging several tables and chairs so she could accommodate her shopping, save a seat for her friend, park the buggy and set up the highchair.

pigsDOfly · 23/01/2019 14:37

I was in the outside part of a cafe once, not in Britain, and some guy brought out a small corn snake. Didn't even have it on a lead. Having said that it was very well behaved, didn't run up to anyone or try to bite people.

Maybe we should have more snake friendly cafes.

MrMakersFartyParty · 23/01/2019 14:42

@rangerider
There are too many parents who have no understanding of the fact that not everyone likes children and that even those who do don't necessarily want them jumping around them and making a mess on the tables - can we make all coffee shops child-free just to avoid the ones who don't have decent parents who ensure their offspring behave appropriately in public?

Are you comparing dogs and children? There's lots of annoying old people too but it only seems OK to bitch about kids.

JacksonPillock · 23/01/2019 14:42

This is such a classic mumsnet thread. OMG DOGS IN CAFES! OUT OF CONTROL FAIRGROUND

Pissedoffdotcom · 23/01/2019 14:44

As long as your pet spider stayed where it was meant to be i'd tolerate it (have a horrific dislike of spiders despite being desperate to overcome it). If however it started eyeballing me like one of those beasties from eight legged freaks we'd have issues.

I've seen rabbits, ferrets, cats & rats on leads. Have seen various pet birds in pubs abroad & also a huuuuge ass snake & a chameleon. Pretty awesome

geekone · 23/01/2019 14:57

@Wordthe my giant 40k puppy is much better behaved than many a Yorkie.

I would love to see a cat/rat/spider on a lead in cafe Nero 🐈 🐀 🕷 Grin

Wow, loads of responses! Thanks all.

Not read them all yet, will do so after the school run!

Yes I am. There are annoying old folk but at least they don't run around screaming. They may stand in the way and chat but you can ask them to move and they do, generally without swearing at you. And they don't have equally sweary parents with them who ignore them until you dare to as them politely to stop. I'll take an old person over a child any day. And a dog over an old person - cuter!

Pissedoffdotcom · 23/01/2019 15:25

Ime smaller dog owners are the worst kind (obviously not ALL but seems to be a general issue ime); people don't expect the same level of behaviour out of little dogs as they do bigger dogs. I have seen yorkie owners laughing & cooing at their little furballs who are snapping & lunging at people/other dogs. If my stocky staffie had even tried that everyone would be up in arms about a vicious dog needing to be controlled.

I'd much rather share my dining space with a staff/dane/collie etc than a yorkie/jrt/chi

EnoughSnowAlready · 23/01/2019 15:30

I love dog friendly businesses. Even if I don't have my two with me I'll almost always choose a dog friendly cafe or shop over one that isn't, because I love seeing other people's dogs and it leaves a favourable impression of the owner on me.

I went to a lovely dog friendly cafe in Whitby a few years ago. When I went in there were two kids screaming and running around. They left after twenty minutes of this, though they'd already had their food. A minute after they left a couple walked in with three terriers. There wasn't a squeak from any of the dogs. It was bliss.

Celebelly · 23/01/2019 15:37

Oh dear, my dog sleeps in our kitchen! Disgusting slatterns that we are.

I've actually never seen a badly behaved dog in a cafe or pub. I think most owners would find it stressful taking a dog who wouldn't settle in somewhere like that. Mine is too curious and keen to make friends so I don't take her to cafes and pubs, although she's been in the odd beer garden. I've been to a lot of dog-friendly places, though, and have only ever seen dogs snoozing under tables or sitting quietly.

BlueGlasses · 23/01/2019 15:38

On Sunday the coffee shop in Holt that we intended to visit sadly (for them) didn't welcome dogs and so they lost our business to one in Wells that made us and our cockapoo very welcome. I think ALL shops, cafes and restaurants should welcome well behaved dogs

northernmonkey1010 · 23/01/2019 15:39

Yabu god help you if you go in a country pub where there's dogs all over the place I love them kind of pubs

marymarkle · 23/01/2019 15:46

Our local pub welcomes dogs so much they give free treats to dogs. In all the years I have lived here there has only once been a problem with a badly behaved dog attacking another dog. The landlord threw the party out and banned them.
The rest of the time there are dogs under tables and a very calm elderly Labrador that wanders around looking for cuddles.

Klopptimist · 23/01/2019 15:55

Thing is, the elderly don't tend to pick up unwrapped items with their mucky hands and put them back. The elderly don't run about squealing and causing trip hazards. When an elderly person coughs or sneezes, they tend to cover their mouth/nose and use a hanky.

Just after Christmas, me and OH went to a Costa on a retail park on the way home from hospital - I'd just had my infusion. I stayed in the car, OH went in. Barista got the cups out, put them on the counter and the woman in front let the child she was carrying cough and splutter all over the counter. OH asked for the cups to be removed and to be replaced when they were ready to be filled as I'm immunocompromised. Woman in front went spare - "How dare you, he's only a baby" (DC looked about 3yo). So yeah, children can be bloody unhygienic at times and it seems we're just supposed to accept it.

WFTisgoingoninmyhead · 23/01/2019 16:19

Almost EVERY cafe/pub and shop in our town accepts dogs. The only one that won't is Wetherspoons, that is not a problem though as my dog doesn't like the Food/Beer or Service in there.

Polarbearflavour · 23/01/2019 16:24

I take my dog to work - loads of dogs on military bases!

wellhellothereall · 23/01/2019 16:38

I don't mind dogs in cafes, I wouldn't take mine because they are too big and would try to eat my cake though. As for children some parents are much worse than dog owners. Went for a birthday meal with my three kids in a restaurant and parents of two toddlers were letting them run around screaming - near us though not them. Had to have a word in the end ie this is a restaurant not soft play centre.
