Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

Dogs sitting having coffee in coffee shops? Not something I've seen round here. Grin

Sparklybanana · 24/01/2019 20:12

About 150 years ago when I was a teenager, someone begged me to let their dog in whilst they looked around the shop. Nothing breakable so I agreed. Dog came in and promptly sprayed one of the shelves....
Most dogs no doubt are well trained and sit quietly but it’s a bit icky when they’re not.

BlueSlipperSocks · 24/01/2019 20:27

Too many incompetent and entitled dog owners who are incapable of comprehending that not everyone wants their little precious slobbering on them

I certainly don't think anyone wants my dog slobbering over them. I don't want anyone's else's dog slobbering (or jumping) over me. I can't think of anything worse!

My dog won't go anywhere near you. I have spent hours training him to stay with me - for your sake, my sake and my dogs sake. Don't tar all dog owners with the same brush.

adaline · 24/01/2019 20:58

He never pays for a round though.

Neither does mine - sheer bloody cheek of it! Grin

berniebee · 24/01/2019 22:39

I hate it. I’m scared of dogs. They often smell. Sometimes get their thing out (ew). They slobber at the sight of food. You can see the hair flying about when they get stroked. Also I know someone who (I was with them and my jaw hit the floor) fed their dog from the fork. Just no Angry

evaperonspoodle · 24/01/2019 23:10

I expect the dog friendly coffee shops to make it clear so that I can avoid them. I went into a vegan place not so long ago and was horrified when a man brought 2 poodle type dogs in with him. They jumped up onto the table and salivated over it as the owner shared his food with them. I was still eating at this point and nearly threw up.

Not to worry. There will be a cafe down the road that doesn't allow dogs. I suggest you go there.

Asthmatic here, with a dog. Cetirizine is the answer 👌

twiglet · 25/01/2019 02:32

We deliberately research and find dog friendly places to eat and stay. Tbh where we have been is fairly obvious that they are dog friendly with water bowls, signs and dog biscuits always obvious.

The number of places which don't allow dogs is still higher I really don't get why people don't think with their feet, if you don't like it, makes you feel sick etc then go somewhere else!

I've only had one negative response when having my dog out with me where a woman decided to complain to get us removed because she thought my asleep dog was disgusting...... Unfortunately for her it was in our local pub very dog friendly and the staff know us and the dog. Needless to say she wasn't happy when they refused and asked her to leave due to her behaviour to staff. My dog stayed asleep.

Commonwasher · 25/01/2019 02:38

Wrong.

Guide dogs - fine.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 25/01/2019 02:56

I’d rather have dogs than kids any day

maddening · 25/01/2019 08:01

Oh antihistamines hadn't thought of that - oh wait 40 years of severe allergy and it does fuck all where dogs are concerned for me, glad your allergy is less severe.

TheOxymoron · 25/01/2019 08:11

This makes me laugh.... what on Earth do you think will happen to you? Rabies? Hairball?

Do you know how many working dogs there are keeping you safe?
I guess you would feel differently if one came in, in an official capacity doing a search.

adaline · 25/01/2019 09:35

It frustrates me when people go to a dog-friendly cafe and then moan about dogs being there. It's like going to a pub and complaining someone is drinking wine!

There are millions of places that don't allow dogs - how about you go to one of those instead of complaining about the few that choose to allow them in?!

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 25/01/2019 09:48

@adaline sometimes it isn't clear if somewhere is dog friendly.

I've turned up to places we've booked or family has booked to find dogs there and we didn't know!

Don't tell me you go into a cafe, spot a dog asleep under the table and have a severe allergic reaction? Hmm

Best you go to a cafe where dogs are not allowed. There are plenty of them. Best get your protective suit and mask on first whilst you do a thorough search of the premises. There may be, or may have been, a guide dog in there at some point. You can't take any chances

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/01/2019 11:38

Works against cat allergies, too.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/01/2019 11:44

Had similar in Barter Books in Alnwick. It is totally dog-friendly - signs all over, treats etc and a woman complained about the number of dogs in there and they were unhygienic and her children didn't like dogs etc. Owner said "Sorry you feel like that. I make them welcome because I have less trouble with dogs destroying and spoiling the stock that I do with children."

No dogs were asked to leave.

adaline · 25/01/2019 12:08

I've turned up to places we've booked or family has booked to find dogs there and we didn't know!

But if it's that important why wouldn't you phone ahead and check? Or stick your head around the door and ask before going in?

I wouldn't assume somewhere allowed my dog so I would check first because it's important to me to be able to take him.

girlsyearapart · 25/01/2019 12:18

The beauty salon place near me was taken over by someone with two small Ish dogs and another who was there fairly often.
They came up to the door wandered around went to jump on people etc
The owner just laughed and thought it was fine.
Place smells of dog
I don’t go anymore

@adaline

Sometimes it's been family events that someone else has booked and we've just been told the venue.

80sMum · 25/01/2019 12:33

Personally I'm not a fan of dogs and would be put off a café that had dogs in it. Dogs are smelly; often spitty and slobbery; usually hairy and possibly muddy and dirty and shouldn't be allowed in food service areas like cafés - with the exception of assistance dogs such as guide dogs, that are necessary to enable a disabled person to access the service.

LimpidPools · 25/01/2019 13:07

Also I know someone who (I was with them and my jaw hit the floor) fed their dog from the fork.

That's a bit unusual. Wouldn't do it myself. Still, at least it wasn't your fork Grin
