Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

I run a coffee shop and we allow dogs. I’ve never known one to make as much mess as humans!
We supply water bowls, usually made out of milk cartons so we can throw them in the recycling rather than a washable one with the crockery.
We don’t touch the dogs so the dogginess
goes nowhere near the food and beverages. Grin

Too many incompetent and entitled dog owners who are incapable of comprehending that not everyone wants their little precious slobbering on them.

Despite my incompetence and entitlement, I can accept that you don't want my little precious slobbering on you - TBH, my little precious's (I have three) don't want to go near anyone they aren't very familiar with, and lie quietly under the seats/table. I don't want them near you, they don't want to be near you, you are the one who doesn't even want to be in the same room - why not go to another cafe?

There are plenty about.

nicslackey · 23/01/2019 20:19

Ugh. Smells, slabbers, hairs floating about, little doggie accidents, people with allergies effectively unable to use the premises.

Children smell (dirty nappies, anyone?!), wipe their sticky fingers and snotty noses on everything and aren't banned from any coffee shops at all.

If you're allergic to dogs, go to one of the millions of coffee shops that DON'T allow dogs - they're still hugely in the majority, so it's not exactly like you have no choice in the matter, is it?

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 23/01/2019 20:27

I don't get this current "dogs are so magnificent that they must be allowed everwhere". No thought of those with allergies or fears, and the thought of all that fur and dander lurking gives me the heave.
It's something I dislike, and actively avoid places that allow dogs in. Don't get me started on dogs being allowed to jump all over my DD, or shit in my garden whilst the owner looks on adoringly, expecting me to feel all over their amazing pet. My cat and I just give them all evil stares, over the steaming turds........

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 23/01/2019 20:28

Ha ha not feel all over their pet, that's just weird. I meant fawn...

EnoughSnowAlready · 23/01/2019 20:33

There are more cafes that don't allow dogs than there are cafes that do. There's still plenty of choice for people with allergies or phobias in most parts of the U.K. Allowing dogs makes a lot of sense and is very profitable for many businesses especially if they are in areas that are popular with dog lovers.

cinemalover · 23/01/2019 20:36

@SapphireSeptember you don't need to walk a spider though do you?😂😂

You also don't need to walk cats, hamsters etc that's why you don't see them out!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/01/2019 21:56

My cat and I just give them all evil stares, over the steaming turds........

Is it an outdoor cat? Leaving its own steaming turds in other people's gardens and digging up their seedlings?

Or is it an indoor cat? Defecating in a tray indoors - in the kitchen perhaps? Grin

Either way, jumping all over the furniture and tables and your kitchen benches, leaving poo-ey footsteps on everything, rubbing it's face on your DD - the same face that's been licking its furry little backside - that's certainly hygienic.

I honestly and truly don't know anyone who allows their dg (deliberately) to jump on people - especially children. Of course, young puppies who are still learning their manners may jump up, but they are immediately checked.

Can't always say the same about badly behaved children.

Mercurial123 · 24/01/2019 10:37

Eddie dogs have always been magnificent it's not a recent thing.

SlightlyPsychotic · 24/01/2019 13:01

@RangeRider I absolutely love that response. I would much rather be in a coffee shop where there are dogs sat being well behaved (or even wandering round having a sniff and exploring for that matter) and just having a moment instead of listening to precious children run riot and complain of boredom whilst parents ignore them and continue chatting or sitting on their phones. Not all dogs are out for blood, some are actually well behaved. Smile

Starlight456 · 24/01/2019 13:09

My Ds is phobic of dogs . He has had cbt but too many incidents where people do not have control of their dog have put him back.

So no I hate it.

The country cafe makes far more sense than in the town. They are not children who can’t be left at home

That depends, doesn't it?

We take our dog on holiday and most of the cottages stipulate the dogs can't be left alone in the cottage at any time, so he has to come with us. In summer he can't be left in the car, so if he want to go for coffee or for lunch, we have to go somewhere that allows us to bring him along too.

And dogs shouldn't be left at home for hours either - I know people do it, but it's not recommended by any animal charity or welfare organisation I know of.

Check where they can go and if you don't like dogs then avoid.

We took our small dog to France on holiday with us and she was welcome everywhere. They literally lay down under the table and don't move.

or this one

SlightlyPsychotic · 24/01/2019 15:27

ginghamstarfish go somehwere, out of the many many choices, where they aren't welcome then? :) simple.

SlightlyPsychotic · 24/01/2019 15:27

Somewhere* oops

inmyfeelings · 24/01/2019 17:01

One reason why I love the Lake District - everywhere is so dog friendly

So there aren't plenty of options for those who prefer a dog free setting ?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/01/2019 17:04

inmyfeelings

Yes there are - Central London.

Of course there are. I live in Ambleside and could name about six places just off the top of my head!

Pissedoffdotcom · 24/01/2019 19:21

Essex here. More places don't accept dogs than do. Plenty of places for dog haters folk who prefer to not have dogs around

agedknees · 24/01/2019 19:46

Don’t ever go to Keswick if you don’t like dogs. It’s mandatory to own one there.

Our dog came from dogs trust, scared of his own shadow. We’ve watched him grow in confidence. He now loves going to the pub, sits under the table and slumbers having happy dog dreams.

He never pays for a round though.

There are plenty of places that don’t welcome dogs, so people who don’t like dogs should utilise those places.

XingMing · 24/01/2019 19:49

Here in the rural SW, I often take my dog out in the car when I leave the house. She gets stressed at being left, but is happy to lounge in the boot of an estate car for an hour or two. I leave windows fairly wide open if it's even slightly warm, and don't take her in summer if there's no certainty of a shaded parking spot. Many shops locally have a hook outside so you can tie up your dog while you shop. But there is a real risk of theft, by people who operate puppy farms, who will snatch a good looking dog for breeding (not XingDog, who is neutered) so one has to be a little cautious. Pedigree animals are valuable.
