NCd for this, obviously.
AIBU to think that opening four tins of oily tuna is stressful? You get smelly oily tunaoil all over your hands , then you have to drain it into the sink (that also gets all oily), the tin opener gets oily and tuna-y and worst of all you have to wash the oil and tuna bits out the tins and lids. I asked DH to open them for me and he said I was being a snowflake! Who is right? He said I should ask Mumsnet.

YANBU Grin DH is the tuna opener in my house for this reason! I normally buy the drain free ones but if for any reason I can't, it's up to him!

dartitus · 19/01/2019 16:08

Seriously?

Coyoacan · 19/01/2019 16:09

I love it. Lots of children and it is opening cans of tuna you find stressful. You must be one of those earth mother types.

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 19/01/2019 16:18

I found a nice solution to this.

  1. Allow child to buy tin of random fish from Ikea.
  1. Store in cupboard as you were unaware it needed to be refrigerated despite its tinned status.
  1. Child forgets about tinned fish they MUST try for approx. 6 months.
  1. When tin has transformed from flat ‘sardine tin’ shape to metal sphere of doom shape, remove from cupboard.
  1. Begin to open tin over food waste bin, contents will quickly self remove from tin as soon as ring pull lid is slightly removed.

At no point do you have to touch contents or even rinse tin as it explosively removed contents for your convenience.

The Ikea self emptying and cleaning tin.™️

I don't remember having that problem with tinned tuna. I think you need more practise.... Grin

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/01/2019 18:34

Can't understand why anyone would not buy no drain tuna

Because it costs a lot more per tin than when you buy multi packs and the liquid in there makes it too wet to make sandwiches with.

I like tin opener cans and use the lid to press down to drain the water out. Only stressful bit is if the cats catch you at it and demand that they get some.

Schmoobarb · 19/01/2019 18:37

This. Zero effort.

BertieBotts · 19/01/2019 18:58

Also because no drain tuna is dry and awful tasting

KissingInTheRain · 19/01/2019 19:22

Unless tinned tuna’s in oil it’s always dry and awful.

thebeesknees123 · 19/01/2019 19:23

I recommend John West No Drain

Bunnybigears · 19/01/2019 19:27

Buy tuna in spring water and also thank god you dont have cats that increases the tuna stress factor by 10 times.

MammaSchwifty · 19/01/2019 19:31

Tuna in oil, but only olive oil. Tuna in water/brine is the stuff of mean prison food and diets.

XiCi · 19/01/2019 21:59

It's not much more expensive, especially if you buy in home bargains, b&m or aldi/Lidl and its so worth the extra. Have never found it too wet for sandwiches (or too dry) either

BellMcEnd · 20/01/2019 01:58

Sending you a hand hold OP.

Claudia1980 · 20/01/2019 04:15

Is this a joke post? If you get stressed over tuna you must have a pretty charmed life!

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 20/01/2019 04:42

Are they all cats?

Grin

OP the only food that I refuse to touch/open/prepare is tuna. DH is our tuna opener. I don't eat it and the thought of getting tuna juice on me makes me queasy. Luckily* my DC don't eat it so it's really just a rule that if DH wants tuna then he gets it himself.

*not luck really, they were never allowed to eat tuna in my presence when they were little as I wouldn't have been able to wipe it up after. I'd have probably had to leave them in a tuna-crusted high chair until DH got home days later and that sounds more neglectful than just banning tuna.

jessstan2 · 20/01/2019 04:57

I've only ever had tinned fish in spring water so wouldn't know but the oily one sounds nice. I'd probably get a big plate and put some kitchen paper towel on it, then open the tin on that so spillages are contained. Four tins in one go sounds like a lot though.

BlackPrism · 20/01/2019 06:31

Who gets tuna in oil?

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 20/01/2019 06:40

OP, I completely agree with you! I don't eat fish though and have always hated its smell, so it's not an issue that affects our house very often.

DH has been trained to open his tins of stinky sardines (when he can no longer resist them), immediately rinse the tin, eat it in the kitchen with the door closed and then immediately either wash the dish or put it in the dishwasher (and close it).

In my defence I really hate the smell of fish Blush

Desmondo2016 · 20/01/2019 06:54

I'm completely with OP. It's definitely a job for the boys.

Oh and no drain tuna isn't half as nice. I buy it in spring water.

UrsulaPandress · 20/01/2019 07:00

Tuna in oil is much tastier than any other.

Ethel36 · 20/01/2019 07:10

Buy tuna in water. Not greasy.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/01/2019 07:15

Sending you a hand hold OP. Me too. Or should it be a paw grip?

I would have thought a large litter to be more stressful tbh.

Mayrhofen · 20/01/2019 07:17

Tuna in oil is better once you have drained it, it’s moist rather than dry.

I guess the cheap flakes in brine without a ring pull too. But for the cats.

Mayrhofen · 20/01/2019 07:17

Buy not guess?..
