Not informed enough to know how realistic this is

I'm a little hesitant to point out this next item, but we need to brainstorm defenses.
If you think the West has seen the power of combined foreign troll armies with domestic collaborators, take a seat. You haven't seen anything yet.

The selective omnichannel floods will come. Combined forces of domestic traitors calling targets and battalions of foreign warm-bodies clicking at gamified interfaces of war, simplified to the point that anyone capable of recognizing shapes and colors can contribute.

The low-learning automatons ("bots") will echo and amplify the actions taken by the human operators. Using bots symbiotically with human core teams (which imitate/improve/amplify/scale when the humans have a success) is more than enough firepower. Advanced AI is not necessary.

Armed with in-depth personal details and personality profiles for every citizen of the target country. Suddenly your phone number, address, first name, last name, and opt-in are populated on 500 go-back-to-college application forms. Your phone will not stop ringing for weeks.

Also your email inbox becomes useless. The faceless horde has millions and millions of reputed email accounts to send you seemingly individualized nonsensical emails that evade spam filters due to the adaptability of those amplification bots. Hundreds of emails per hour pour in.

Now the fun part begins. Utilizing video processing advancements (think along the lines of DeepFakes, Blender, and Photoshop), it seems the adversary is also sending out bombardments of convincingly-realistic pornography, featuring your face, to every person you've ever friended.

Wait a few minutes as the message spreads through the swarm that you're the target. Minimally maintained business entities tied to no one of real value suddenly start requesting your credit score. Over, and over, and over again... exploiting the fact that this tanks your score.

Now the "AI-Powered Voice Assistants" spin up. They sound real, they have convincing scripts, and people think they are real. These bots call your landlord, your boss, your neighbors, your friends, and anyone else that will listen to made up stories about you beating your wife.

And here's the kicker- You don't know why you are being targeted. You don't know who exactly the adversary is. That is part of the strategy. You were chosen to be targeted because an algorithm believes you are the right combination of destroyable with effective chain reactions.

You see, they don't need to target everyone. They only need to target the right people, with the right technique(s), at the right time to cause cascading failures which destroy you and everyone else within, or allied with, your nation.
That is one coming storm. We need defenses.

Well, I don't know about the detail. But the first few sentences are certainly true – we've already seen the try out in the US 2016 election and very possibly in the Brexit referendum.

"If you think the West has seen the power of combined foreign troll armies with domestic collaborators, take a seat. You haven't seen anything yet. The selective omnichannel floods will come."

PerkingFaintly · 30/01/2019 11:57

And I say again, for all its faults, Google started with the motto "Don't be evil".

Facebook started with Mark Zuckerberg describing its users as "Dumb fucks" for trusting him.

www.theregister.co.uk/2010/05/14/facebook_trust_dumb/

IIRC Facebook was also one of the companies which campaigned for political ads on its platform NOT to be covered by US laws on political advertising, regarding disclosure that something was an ad and who was paying for it.

US firms seek changes to UK standards on beef and drugs

US lobby groups for agriculture and pharmaceutical firms want UK standards changed to be closer to those of the US in a post-Brexit trade deal.
The meat lobby wants the sale of growth hormone-fed beef, currently banned in the UK and EU, to be allowed in the UK.
The drugs company lobby wants changes to the NHS drugs approval process to allow it to buy more of US drugs.
They are also asking US officials - who will hold a hearing later - to seek lower tariffs on agricultural goods.
The farming groups say any deal should move away from EU standards, including rules governing genetically modified crops, antibiotics in meats, and pesticides and herbicides, such as glyphosate.

PerkingFaintly · 30/01/2019 14:01

Yeah.

People who have been glibly throwing about the phrase "vassal state" wrt to the EU are about to discover what the term really means. The UK will be the US's bitch once we're no longer an equal member of a powerful trading bloc.

MerdedeBrexit · 30/01/2019 14:58

Hello, Brexit is currently more of a shambles than Trump, and I can't think about it any more, so I'm back here with this:

Russia's Wagner group, a shadowy Putin-linked military contractor, is deployed in Sudan, CAR, Syria, Ukraine & Venezuela performing military operations aimed at suppressing dissent for local dictators or advancing Kremlin foreign policy objectives.

A criminal alliance of genocidal dictatorships propped up by a group of Putin's own private army of mercenaries, free from accountability, acting in contravention of international law.
Hybrid warfare is the new global order, civilians in the developing world the primary victims.

The Western Right is far too busy tearing liberal democracy apart, collapsing into nationalism & isolationism, while significant sections of the Western Left is actively cheering on many of these dictatorships, either ignoring or encouraging Putin's "multi-polar" world order.

That's good news about the Republicans being named to the House Intel committee, so it will be able to sit.

I was going to have a quick look to see if any are indentured Trumpies.

But I lost the will when I found this about Elise Stefanik:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elise_Stefanik
In 2017, Stefanik co-sponsored the Preserving Employee Wellness Programs Act (H.R. 1313) in 115th Congress – legislation that, among other things, would eliminate the genetic privacy protections of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 and allow companies to require employees to undergo genetic testing or risk paying a penalty of thousands of dollars, and would let employers see that genetic and other health information.

NEW Docket unsealed for mystery foreign company battling Mueller grand jury subpoena, here bit.ly/2Sfso4h . Entity's name seems to be 22 to 27-ish bold capital characters long. U.S. seems to have moved to seize related property. background here

Mystery company fighting Mueller subpoena:

-Wholly owned by a foriegn government (court docs)
-Has business in the US (court docs)
-Financial institution (per WaPo)
-Represented by Alston & Bird (per BuzzFeed and CNN)

So let's put this together: A financial institution owned fully by a foreign government, with biz in the US, rep'd by Alston & Bird.

Alston & Bird represented the Russia govenment as recently as 2014.

It is NOT:

-Alfa Bank
-VTB
-Sberbank
-Deutsche Bank
-Bank of Cyprus
-Gazprom
-Rosneft

This leaves two clear frontrunners:

-Vnesheconombank (VEB) - CEO met with Kushner during transition
-Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) - Official met with Cohen during transition

Whoever it is just passed the $1,000,000 mark in fines for fighting the subpoena. The court previously ruled that they must pay $50,000 in fines daily for not complying. It is day 21.
