AIBU when people say 'hows baby?' etc

Small gripe but when I'm watching One Born Every Minute why do the midwives constantly say 'baby's nearly here', or 'baby's head is coming', or 'how's baby?' The correct phrase 'is the baby's heads coming' or 'the baby's nearly here'!!! Surely it's not so hard that you can't add the word 'THE'!!

YABU. There is genuinely no way to keep pregnant/birthing/new mothers happy. Everything is offensive. Apparently

Costacoffeeplease · 19/01/2019 00:01

Do you not have much to think about?

Rodenhide · 19/01/2019 00:01

Haven't we run out of things to be annoyed about yet?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/01/2019 00:02

I wish that was all I had to gripe about.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/01/2019 00:03

They're not saying "baby" as in "the baby". They're saying "Baby".

They're using it as a name.

onalongsabbatical · 19/01/2019 00:04

I guess they haven't thoroughly read 'The Midwives Correct Phrase Dictionary.'

QuestionableMouse · 19/01/2019 00:04

Well actually there's nothing wrong with any of those sentences. Get a grip.

But "Baby" sounds more name-like than The Baby.

I never called my DS 'my baby' he was always 'My Son' .
I didn't like 'Baby/My Baby/The Baby'

PatricksRum · 19/01/2019 00:05

It doesn't annoy me really but I know what you mean.

CoffeeTableBook · 19/01/2019 00:05

YANBU.

See also, “Jimmy and mum are coming to the meeting.”

No. You mean “Jimmy and HIS mum.”

Billballbaggins · 19/01/2019 00:07

It doesn’t bother me, I also see it as them using it as a name ‘Baby’ rather than ‘the baby’ which is more disconnected IWSWIM?

Seline · 19/01/2019 00:07

I find it odd, yes. I find a lot of language in maternity is quite peculiar

When my twins were in neonatal, a nurse said to me "so how are mummy and daddy doing?" and it took me ages to figure out she meant me and my partner and was not being nosy about my own mum and dad.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/01/2019 00:08

Oh , yes years of being "Mum"

My DS is 19 now and calls me "Muvver.....if that is your real name" (accompanied by the Snake Eyes of the Teenager)

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 19/01/2019 00:08

YADNBU. Fucking HATE it when people miss off the 'the'. Why do it? You sound like an utter cunt so don't. It's not hard is it?

CoastalLife · 19/01/2019 00:09

I'm with you, OP. It always grates on me when I hear it too.

SheldonTheWonderShlong · 19/01/2019 00:09

Bit harsh maybe?

Hotterthanahotthing · 19/01/2019 00:15

I get it, it's one of my pet hates too.

Drogosnextwife · 19/01/2019 00:19

It's a bit weird, the first time I heard it I thought it was strange but actually I think it's nicer than the baby now, don't know why. My dp worked as a carer for a boy a while ago and when he was talking to any of the other carers about the boys mum and dad they would refer to them as mum and dad, even when the boy wasn't there! Drove me mad. They have names just use them.

Seline · 19/01/2019 00:26

Drogon DH never got used to nursing staff on the special care ward calling him daddy. He always used to say it made him uncomfortable.

I'd rather have been referred to as Seline or *s Mum. Just mummy was hard to get used to.

PurpleDaisies · 19/01/2019 00:27

I hate it so much I would put it into Room 101.

It’s so unbelievably nauseating and twee.

littlemisscomper · 19/01/2019 00:28

I think it's much nicer and more personal to say 'Baby' than 'The baby'. It's acknowledging the fact that it's a person rather than an inanimate object. In the same way that it's nicer for a vet to talk about 'Tiddles' than 'Your cat'.

If we're having a moan about 'Baby's' though, I can't stand when 'I hate you' songs have 'Baby's' dotted around all over the place. It's bad enough if adults use it as a sickly term of endearment for each other but why would it ever be used when you're basically telling someone you hope they rot in hell?!

Seline · 19/01/2019 00:29

Something I found odd was when I had DS1 I told them his name as I was going into theatre.

He was still tagged as Baby BOY. I gave them his name deliberately so they could use it.

sunlighthouse · 19/01/2019 00:31

I totally get it and I find it really annoying too. I mean, I know there are bigger things to worry about and everything. But it just sounds so stupid and childish.

See also being called "Mum" at the GP/HV/nursery/school/pharmacy/hairdresser etc etc.

StoppinBy · 19/01/2019 00:31

You had a baby with two heads?
