To ask if you’d vote differently if we had second referendum?

Bizzle123 · 18/01/2019 21:02

I’ve read threads about how people would vote in a second Brexit referendum. But it’s more interesting - and more relevant - to know if many people have actually changed their minds. So, are there any “leavers” who would now vote remain and vice versa? What are your reasons?

Its cos we live in a democracy that we can keep on voting

The result of voting in the referendum is that we voted to leave. Why keep on voting for another result?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/01/2019 22:17

im just tired of people saying another vote isn't democratic

It is democratic...whether its a good idea or not is a completely different thing

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/01/2019 22:18

And i agree with therewillbe

I dint think just leave or remain on a futre ballot...should there be one, is a good idea at all!!

ilovesooty · 18/01/2019 22:19

In that case Theresa May is insane. Apparently she has simply gone back to the EU and presented exactly the same demands again. Goodness knows what she can say to the House next week.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/01/2019 22:19

Oh god has she?

Oh that's embarrassing...to say the least

Voted leave and would vote leave again.
I'm in Scotland - Don't believe all the SNP propaganda you hear, the only reason the remainers got the majority in Scotland was because the SNP were very vocal about how the result could be a catalyst for a new Indy referendum. You know...that once in a lifetime referendum that we never hear the end of? zzz

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/01/2019 22:22

ThereWillBeAdequateFood

Doing the same thing repeatedly expecting a different result.

and that is what those repeatedly posting these threads are doing

- no deal
- May’s withdrawal agreement
- Norway
- Canada

And you split the leave vote, and remain win, but at least it appears to be democratic.

I know that the claim is that leavers are thick, but give them some credit.

Deadsouls · 18/01/2019 22:22

Whenever there is one of these threads, almost no one has changed their minds I find.

I had a question. When ppl say 'just leave"
What does that even mean?

ilovesooty · 18/01/2019 22:23

I read it this evening Rufus
If it's true (it may not be I suppose) it is indeed embarrassing.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/01/2019 22:23

boney

What am i missing

I thought all 4 of those were leave...just different leaves

User758172 · 18/01/2019 22:23

No deal, that’s what I would vote for.

Chloemol · 18/01/2019 22:24

Let’s hope we don’t get another chance. What do we do if it’s remain? One each another one to break the tie? We had the opportunity in 2016, leave won, we live in a democracy. Say we do vote to remain, do you really think the eu bully boys won’t punish us? We just need to make the best of it now and move on

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/01/2019 22:24

ThereWillBeAdequateFood

I apologise I jumped the gun and didn't read it properly when you posted

  • no deal
  • May’s withdrawal agreement
  • Norway
  • Canada

I was expecting remain in there and jumped the gun.

It is the first time that I have seen four leave options put forward as the next referendum ballot.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/01/2019 22:25

I find the phrase

Once in a lifetime (anything )

To be a lie in 99% of cases

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/01/2019 22:25

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer

Yes. my own bias is showing. again apologies to ThereWillBeAdequateFood

charlieb1234 · 18/01/2019 22:25

I voted to remain but if there is a second referendum then we are no longer a democracy.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/01/2019 22:25

boney

Oh thank god

I thought i was going mad(der)

RedWineIsFabulous · 18/01/2019 22:26

Ilovesooty

Source please. How do you know that?

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/01/2019 22:27

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer

It is just so unusual to have no remain option put forward. I went straight for the go to response.

Then read it again Blush

ilovesooty · 18/01/2019 22:27

I think it might have been the I paper.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/01/2019 22:28

The only thing brexit has taught me is that we need better education in schools as to how our government runs

Whatever party you support, however you voted (or didnt) in the referendum

I honestly think that some of the politicians are pulling the wool over our eyes!!

KennDodd · 18/01/2019 22:29

There is really interesting psychology around this. Firstly, of course, there is confirmation bias, so we unconsciously seek out information that confirms beliefs we already have. Secondly, that if faced with facts that contradict our beliefs, instead of rethinking, people become even more entrenched in those beliefs. How many times have we heard people saying things like 'nothing will convince me' or 'you'll never change my mind'.
I think this is especially true of Brexit because we've become Leavers or Remainers, it's become about our identity. We can see how leaving is going and yet so few people have changed their minds, a lot now do seem to be saying that they know it'll be shit, they always did (not what they said two years ago though).

Thirdly our view of experts and expert information is a factor. I've read a study that shows that experts, in whatever subject, so could be cell biology, Tudor history, Roman mythology, anything, experts underestimate how much they know about their subject and overestimate how much the public know. At the same time, the public overestimate how much they know about any particular subject and underestimate how much experts know. This is shown so often recently when, for example, I hear people, just normal low level of education, disagreeing with what a Nobel prize winning economist might have written.

Kittykatmacbill · 18/01/2019 22:29

Remain then, remain now, remain for ever.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/01/2019 22:30

And they lie

About everything...i bet if you ask them what they had for breakfast they'd fib

Not all politicians...but it seems like most
