Would you want another Brexit referendum?

simplesalvage · 15/01/2019 11:36

Inspired by the would you vote the same way thread.

I was initially against another referendum thinking it would be undemocratic to not accept the vote but after reading the 'would you vote the same' thread I think I have changed my mind.

  1. It is not undemocratic to ask the same question to people again. You are asking the same people so they can vote the same way again if they wish. In fact asking again is more democratic. When you were in school you would always do repeat science experiments to ensure the results were accurate.
  2. Someone said when you have to consent for an operation they take your consent multiple times in case you change your mind - when they first tell you about it and again just before the information. People do change their minds - they learn new information and just have a different state of mind.
  3. We do have more information available now. A lot of what was said were lies (think £350 million available to the NHS) and we know a lot more about the general process of leaving now.
  4. The population has changed since the referendum. Unfortunately a lot of people have died and 16/17 year olds who could not then now are old enough. Therefore another referendum would provide a more representative view of the future.
  5. Another referendum is not likely to ask the same question. It would be more like do you want 'this' deal and to leave with it as that is what we can get (or no deal), or to remain etc.

My main worry about another referendum is that the country would probably descend in to chaos and a minority of leave voters might get a bit nasty.

Anyway sorry for the long post. I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me (like I did yesterday!). What are everyones thoughts?

how about actually implementing it as promised and being proved wrong?

What would we be implementing? We're no clearer on what Brexit means than we were two years ago.

As for doing it in order to show people they were wrong, that's people's lives you're playing with. People have already lost jobs over this, add to that increased food prices and drug shortages, it's just abysmal. And yet again it will be the less well off that will suffer. It's fucking horrible.

NicoAndTheNiners · 16/01/2019 10:06

Yes.

I honestly think a lot of people who voted leave last time would vote remain now theyve seen the details

OutPinked · 16/01/2019 10:09

No, I still think the vote would go the same way and I say that as a staunch remainer. I just don’t think Brexit should happen full stop. A referendum result is basically an opinion poll, it isn’t legally binding.

LuckyPaws88 · 16/01/2019 10:10

I would like an extension of article 50 or whatever it is from the EU, and a new vote on brexit where people are presented with actual facts and wherever possible there are bipartisan details and debates

Poloshot · 16/01/2019 10:12

No

LaurieMarlow · 16/01/2019 10:14

A referendum result is basically an opinion poll

Except that isn't how it was sold. At all.

Much as I want someone to have the balls to come out and say 'this is a total disaster, let's step back and rethink it', selling that to those who voted leave will be a colossal challenge.

I want David Cameron's head on a stick. One of the most almighty fuck ups in history.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/01/2019 10:49

Instead of insisting we can supposedly now see what Brexit is like, how about actually implementing it as promised

Ooh what kind of Brexit were you promised?

Brexiteersdo understand that ...brexiteers rejected T Mays Brexit plan too.

What happened to all that ‘we have to pull together and get behind it’ stuff?

User758172 · 16/01/2019 10:55

No. We had a referendum, we voted to Leave - that’s it. This unholy mess has dragged on for too long already. The EU won’t budge - let’s start planning now for No Deal. Never have we had such a self-serving, incompetent politicians in government on all sides.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/01/2019 10:58

What are the benefits of no deal?

puzzledlady · 16/01/2019 11:06

I know remainers who would now vote leave just becasue of how the EU is bullying the UK. It’s awful to watch.

AutumnCrow · 16/01/2019 11:07

I think a second referendum or public vote is almost inevitable. The current situation is unsustainable.

Both May and Corbyn are unlikely to survive it.

What a fuck up.

Thurmanmurman · 16/01/2019 11:10

No. We have already proved that the great British public can’t be trusted.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/01/2019 11:14

how the EU is bullying the UK

Confused

The EU hasn't changed its very clear position. Is that what you call 'bullying'?
Its the UK parliament who rejected the deal not the EU.

goingonabearhunt1 · 16/01/2019 11:14

I agree with the PP above; I am SO angry at Cameron. But the govt are in a right mess now so politically may end up having to have another referendum to get out of this stalemate and I'm in no way convinced that Remain would win this time either Sad

User758172 · 16/01/2019 11:16

@puzzledlady
Ask me again and I’d vote to Leave. I regret voting to remain.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/01/2019 11:17

no no no! this country is divided enough, more bloody chaos and hate from another referendum- no thanks. The idea that a second referendum would see remain win and everyone accept that is farcical.

treaclesoda · 16/01/2019 11:20

I wouldn't want another referendum because I suspect that whilst the outcome might possibly be different it would still be by a very small margin. And if that happened, and suddenly Brexit was cancelled (all hypothetical I know) then the venom and ill feeling we've witnessed so far would be dwarfed by what would follow.

Deadbudgie · 16/01/2019 11:31

I don’t want another referendum but if we have to have one the question should be hard or soft Brexit. We have voted out of the EU already. So the only question should be how we are leaving

Missymoo100 · 16/01/2019 11:43

I agree Budgie, I can see no justification for putting the original question back to the public.
I think the government is an absolute disgrace- THEY called the first referendum, they put it to the people, they said they would implement the result- then didn’t like the result and are backtracking.
The government is entirely responsible for this mess. This talk of a second referendum, seems to me they hope they can make the situation go away, and remain will win. What if it doesn’t?, will they ignore the second vote.

LaurieMarlow · 16/01/2019 11:50

let’s start planning now for No Deal.

Why, the fuck, would we actively harm ourselves like that?

Why would we willingly and knowingly walk into severe economic disruption, food shortages, medicine shortages, travel chaos, the possibility of civil unrest, potential of reigniting hostilities in Northern Ireland?

Seriously why? When there are alternative routes available to us?

Helmetbymidnight · 16/01/2019 11:50

Do you understand what's going on? This Govt didn't call the first referendum. David Cameron called the first referendum. The Govt were divided between Leavers and Remainers. When Leave won, no Leaver wanted to take over, not Johnson, Davis, Gove, etc, so TMay did. TM got prominent leavers to negotiate Brexit but they all resigned. TM made a plan that that has been rejected - largely by Brexiteers.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/01/2019 11:52

Why, the fuck, would we actively harm ourselves like that?

Ooh, I know the answer to this: The hardship and suffering will bring back British values. Hmm

Freezby · 16/01/2019 11:54

I would love another referendum if remain would win and we could forget this whole mess. However I would hate another referendum incase leave wins again. I just can't see a good outcome at this point!

Missymoo100 · 16/01/2019 11:55

Helmet-
David Cameron was the leader of the party at the time, but he didn’t make the decision by himself- he had support to hold the referendum. He didn’t act in isolation did he 🤔

LaurieMarlow · 16/01/2019 11:55

This talk of a second referendum, seems to me they hope they can make the situation go away, and remain will win. What if it doesn’t?

This is it in a nutshell.

If leave wins again, our position hasn't changed except that leave has more of a mandate. What are remainders going to do then?

Even if remain wins by a small margin, that doesn't provide any clarity. Leavers will be understandably pissed off. Then we get into 'best of 3' debates. It's ridiculous.

Another referendum is staggeringly unlikely to give us direction out of this mess.
