Would you inform the police if your child committed a serious crime?

This is a hypothetical question. But just wondering what others would do if you knew or suspected your child had committed a serious crime such as rape or murder?
I would inform the police for rape or murder. Not so sure about theft though.

I don't think I could, even though my rational mind would be screaming out to do it.

I hope to never find out.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 22:37

Yes, if they had hurt someone like that I would.

Jimdandy · 14/01/2019 22:40

No. I couldn’t do it.

SouthWestmom · 14/01/2019 22:42

Nope. Unless for murder maybe.

squeakyreptile · 14/01/2019 22:46

Definitely for rape or murder. I remember asking my DM as an overly inquisitive small child, if she would report any of us if we murdered someone and she said that she would. I agree. I would love them unconditionally still, but that wouldn't never cause me to condone such an act by covering it up.

SavageBeauty73 · 14/01/2019 22:46

Rape and murder yes.

YogaWannabe · 14/01/2019 22:48

I can’t imagine ever shopping my DD for anything (not that I can imagine her doing anything arrest worthy anyway) but if she did I think I’d be more to help her cover it up Blush sorry!

FinnegansWhiskers · 14/01/2019 22:49

Yes. Without doubt. How can any parent defend a child who has committed rape or murder??

Tutlefru · 14/01/2019 22:50

Yes.

I often wonder how so many relatives can help conceal such a serious crime.

Even going as far as to help bury a body.

Never.

OwlinaTree · 14/01/2019 22:51

Don't know, would depend on the circumstances and the crime I guess.

MynameisJune · 14/01/2019 22:51

Rape yes, murder would depend on circumstances. If she killed a Violent spouse then no probably not.

Dongdingdong · 14/01/2019 22:53

I’m gobsmacked that some of you wouldn’t turn in your child if they raped or murdered someone. That’s shocking!

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 14/01/2019 22:53

Yes, absolutely. What if your child was raped or murdered and the perpetrator was never convicted because someone covered it up?

TornFromTheInside · 14/01/2019 22:55

You start with rape and murder...
then you have assault and battery on an old lady...
then you have killing a child in a hit and run in a stolen car...
then you have killing a child through drink driving...
then you have killing a just married couple through reckless driving...
then you have robbing an old couple of their life savings through fraud...
then you have supplying drugs to kids...

are you going to let any of these go?

RosemarysBabyDress · 14/01/2019 22:55

Absolutely Not.

Unless it would make it worst for him not to tell, or his own children were at risk, otherwise NO.

Jimdandy · 14/01/2019 22:55

The question was about shopping them to the Police. I’m not sure where covering it up has come from. Not explicitly informing the Police is not the same as “covering it up”.

I get what some of you are saying, but my child is MY child and my loyalty and instinct is to protect them.

UtterlyDesperate · 14/01/2019 22:56

Yes - because you can still offer support to a child without condoning their actions. And the best thing for your child is to get things out in the open - so they're not spending the rest of their life looking over their shoulder--so you can help them deal with the consequences of their actions.

Asked my parents this a few years ago (about murder): bring-back-the-death-penalty DF was a "depends but quite possibly not". Bleeding heart liberal, people who commit crimes are victims of society DM was a very prompt "Definitely. Of course. How could you even think I wouldn't" Confused. Nowt as queer as DP Grin

CokeAndCrispsAndDip · 14/01/2019 22:56

I shopped an ex fiance for stealing a car, without hesitation.

I would not cover up my childs crime, I would love and support them but I wouldn't lie about something as serious as rape or/ and murder

Chloemol · 14/01/2019 22:56

Yes and for all those who said they couldn’t do it what would you want parents to do if it was your child raped or murdered. I would also for theft, I know a number of people who have been burgled and it’s destroyed them, they no longer feel safe in their own homes and that’s wrong

TornFromTheInside · 14/01/2019 22:57

The question was about shopping them to the Police. I’m not sure where covering it up has come from. Not explicitly informing the Police is not the same as “covering it up”.

Erm, it is the same.

UtterlyDesperate · 14/01/2019 22:58

And I once asked my BF if she'd help me hide a body: No.

WTAF?! "I'd get you the best lawyer ever, as that'd be more use."

Between friends and family, I am so going down if I ever commit murder Hmm

TornFromTheInside · 14/01/2019 22:58

If the local newspaper describes 'hit and run driver' and you know who that driver is, and don't say, you are covering it up.

MrsRyanGosling15 · 14/01/2019 22:58

I a heartbeat, and I don't understand how anyone could be a decent person and not come to the same conclusion. I am stunned people wouldn't turn them in. Why? Why would you become complicit in that? I wouldn't even want to know them. I certainly wouldn't be visiting a rapist son in prison.

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 14/01/2019 22:59

Rape or any form of sexual abuse yes I would instantly report....for one drug offences if they had blown through the Rehabs i could afford

Murder....it would entirely depend...a form of self defence no probably not but serial killer level? Yes because I would want to protect someone else

Hairyfairy01 · 14/01/2019 22:59

For a serious crime yes, of course. Totally shocked at how many wouldn’t. Could you really live with the guilt of knowing and not reporting who committed such a crime? - - have also taken my 5 year ld to the security guard in Tesco when she took a sweet from the pick n mix - -
