Do your teenager's bedrooms look like this?

thingersandfumbs · 14/01/2019 17:44

Just that really. My teenage DD lives in an utter shit pit.

So, aibu to care? For context, DP encountered our dog with a used sanitary towel in his mouth a few weeks ago, from DD's shit tip.

I'm no clean and tidy queen, I promise you that, but to me this is unacceptable. Aibu?

My dd puts her sanitary towels in the bathroom bin and if someone forgets to shut the door the dog retrieves them from the bin. Could it be possible that your dd has done the same?

fortheloveofmum · 14/01/2019 17:57

Mine looked like that as a teenager, I did try my best to clean it but found it hard to stay on top of. It's definitely not a healthy way to live and looking back I feel embarrassed about it. I am now 28 and like to keep my house very tidy so I do think it's something I grew out of.
Maybe she just needs a bit of help to keep it clean? I'm not saying do it for her but maybe just help her out till she is mature enough to keep it properly clean all by herself.

CaptainCarp · 14/01/2019 17:57

Most of my clothes lived on the floor of my bedroom along with college work /sports kit BUT my parents would have thrown the lot in the dustbin had I left food up there (we weren't really meant to eat in the bedroom).
Also if the dog didn't fetch the pad out of a bin then that is next level gross.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 17:58

Holy fuck ... I hope that isn't a glimpse of the future.

Bluntness100 · 14/01/2019 17:58

Well the used sanitary towel is a step too far and that's just fucking gross.

However yeah mine was like that, I recall my father constantly going on at me, and I point blank refused to tidy it, you couldn't see the floor or the bed.

I am now anally tidy and hate mess of any kind.

thingersandfumbs · 14/01/2019 17:58

MrDarcyWillBeMine her bedroom is 12 x 8, with a corridor which is exclusively hers. She has a double wardrobe, a bedside table, a bookcase and a large chest of drawers. I'm not sure what else I can provide to her - short of moving which is really not going to happen.

For those suggesting I need to help her sort it, I do. With boring regularity.

Thanks to those who've responded. I'm at my wits end.

Repulsive!!! My room never looked like that 🤮

PristineCondition · 14/01/2019 18:00

*I’m sorry but how small is her room??

I think YABVU to expect a teen girl to manage in that glorified cupboard!

🤔 if you put all my stuff (at 17) in there you wouldn’t be able to open the door!

YABVU!*

Really?

thingersandfumbs · 14/01/2019 18:00

The dog definitely didn't get it from the bathroom bin. It was part of a collection on the floor.

Wait for her to go out and bin bag the lot - dispose of rubbish and bag up everything else telling her you've binned it! Watch her reaction - wait for her to calm down and tell her she can have her stuff back if she'll stay tidy

I agree with the suggestion about WiFi - switch off until the situation is resolved definitely

Would you like to donate some if your spare millions so o/p can buy a bigger house Hmm.

My dd’s bedroom is about the same size and is not a shit tip. A few clothes lying around and an unmade bed, but nothing too bad.

Dsd once left a used sanitary pad still attached to her knickers on the floor of a bedroom once. I cleared it up but think i am scarred for life. I really don’t get doing that, it is so grim.

frenchchick9 · 14/01/2019 18:02

Looks like the room has been burgled! Nope, not in my house. I couldn't stand that.

Clionba · 14/01/2019 18:02

@thingersandfumbs - just ignore it.
She'll get past this phase. I found that closing the door helped.

DontDeadOpenInside · 14/01/2019 18:03

My room was like that Blush
I do however have 3 teen dds that share a room and it never gets as bad as that. Thank fuck. Wouldn't be able to open the door. Grin they do leave beakers, makeup and hair stuff everywhere though Hmm

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/01/2019 18:03

I don't know about dogs, but to a cat a used tampon has at least 90% of the desirable characteristics of a mouse.

Villanellesproudmum · 14/01/2019 18:03

Not quite that bad but it does start to head that way until I shout at them to sort it out.

Howhot · 14/01/2019 18:04

I don't think it's unusual but it's certainly not acceptable. It's disgusting. Her clothes must smell and you'll likely end up with some kind of infestation leaving it like that and you'll be lucky if it's only ants...

jellybaby1 · 14/01/2019 18:04

Mine kids rooms look like this Blush. I've gone through it with them, cleaned it sorted it binned it all, and within 6 weeks it looks like this again. I've given up now and just shut the doors Grin

ScienceIsTruth · 14/01/2019 18:05

Don't think my dc's rooms are quite that bad, although 1 is messier than the other, and doesn't always remember to put a bin bag in the bin.
I've had all the cups, etc, left upstairs though, so I don't really allow them food or drink upstairs anymore(except water).

skippy67 · 14/01/2019 18:05

I've just showed the OP to my teenage DD. She's by nooo means a tidy person, and she said your dd's room is disgusting. Can't believe posters saying it's normal??

Butterflycookie · 14/01/2019 18:06

Yep my rooms like that too!

UterusUterusGhali · 14/01/2019 18:06

@MrDarcyWillBeMine You know not everyone can afford double bedrooms for each person, right?
You know houses are built with bedrooms this small with the intention of people sleeping in them?
You know people live differently to you?
Wind your neck in, you sound like an utter snob.

Chinks123 · 14/01/2019 18:06

My room would have been like this is my mum wasn’t constantly moaning at me to clean it, and mine was much smaller than this. I’m glad she moaned though, can you imagine if she had friends round? Clothes everywhere is common for a teenager but the pizza boxes and food everywhere is just lazy and rude I think.

Cornettoninja · 14/01/2019 18:06

Yup that’s normal. Mine certainly looked similar at times when I was a teenager. I used to blitz it to perfection then it would slowly creep back to a shit tip. Too many important things to do you see. Grin

Thing is, although they’re perfectly capable, teenagers are still learning, so it’s a case of keeping on at their unappreciative arses. Once they develop a sense of shame at their living conditions they start to improve, unfortunately that tends to be when they’ve left your house.

Internet photos are a low blow tbh, i think you need to alternate between nagging/shaming her to sort out the unhygienic stuff and helping her out. I wouldn’t aim too high with your expectations (as in have none) because you’ll only get angry and annoyed when she doesn’t meet them. And she won’t consistently.

twoheaped · 14/01/2019 18:06

How old is she?
My dd(12) is like this, her sister was not.
I have given up nagging but do remove food waste as we are v rural and rats had taken up residence when we moved in. Don't want to be going back to that!!
