There's a dog in my house

There's a Labrador in my house and I don't know where it's come from. DH appears to of left the back door unlocked by mistake, but it was shut? He's at work and knows nothing about it, I've just got home from work and I have acquired a dog. Collar but no ID tag. What is going on?! How did it get in?! Can labradors open and close doors? My little King Charles cavalier spaniel seems to think he's his new best friend so has obviously enjoyed this unplanned play date (thank god a friendly dog decided to break into my house and not an aggressive one) no idea how long this lab has been here but house has been empty besides our dog since 11am. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I'm baffled. Waiting for DH to get back with the car so I can get him to a vets before they all shut and see if he's chipped.

show.me.the moneyyyyy ahem I mean dog Grin

WellBHoise · 14/01/2019 17:39

I would probably still take it to the vet, it sounds like if it is hers she can’t look after it, you can ask them what they suggest. If she is struggling with him, would you be willing to keep him? She can visit him still.

I had a Corgi cross that would jump onto the window sills and open the window (if not locked) to let herself out. She was also able to open the latched back gate we had by jumping onto the wall and using her paw to unlatch it and her nose to nudge it open. All she did though was go and wait by the front door to be let back in!

Soubriquet · 14/01/2019 17:40

My Nan and grandads old border collie used to open doors

All the door handles were turned upside down to stop her from opening them

Hope you find out where lab came from

HardAsSnails · 14/01/2019 17:41

Very jealous, hope there's a happy outcome.

FrequentFlyerRandomDent · 14/01/2019 17:41

I would check on the welfare of the old lady. The dog might have been looking for help (watched too many films).

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 14/01/2019 17:41

I am also shamelessly placemarking Grin

ChesterGreySideboard · 14/01/2019 17:42

Random cats yes, not random dogs.

Notwiththeseknees · 14/01/2019 17:43

By law you must report it to the dog warden BUT you don't need to let them take it. You give your contact details. Same with the vet. They will usually tell you they will keep the dog & report, which means a stressful night at the local contract kennel.

You can tell the Warden you will look after it for the time being. Check out your local lost dog page. There will be loads.

dArtagnansCrumpet · 14/01/2019 17:46

I have a lab, I can't imagine him getting himself into someone else's house he's not that smart! I hope you post a pic!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 14/01/2019 17:47

I'm getting an advert for Welsh holiday cottages at the bottom of the thread - maybe that's where the lab got the idea Grin

Our dog is part lab and can open doors! We adopted her when she was 1 so she came with the ability! We only realised when she kept turning up in rooms we thought we'd shut her out off.

Freezby · 14/01/2019 17:48

He belongs to the lady with dementia but apparently she was a bit vague and skittish when asked, going to drop him down now and just try and keep an eye on whether she seems to be coping ok with such an active dog? Bit worried but it's not my place to say she shouldn't have a dog really is it..

Love tjis!

exWifebeginsat40 · 14/01/2019 17:49

and once, my boyfriend had a labweiler who broke out of the house one evening and went to the pub. he wandered across town and sat outside the pub door, going in when someone opened it. he sat and ate crisps until we could go and collect him.

he was a Good Dog. oh, wait. he also once peed on a corpse, but that’s another story.
