There's a dog in my house

There's a Labrador in my house and I don't know where it's come from. DH appears to of left the back door unlocked by mistake, but it was shut? He's at work and knows nothing about it, I've just got home from work and I have acquired a dog. Collar but no ID tag. What is going on?! How did it get in?! Can labradors open and close doors? My little King Charles cavalier spaniel seems to think he's his new best friend so has obviously enjoyed this unplanned play date (thank god a friendly dog decided to break into my house and not an aggressive one) no idea how long this lab has been here but house has been empty besides our dog since 11am. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I'm baffled. Waiting for DH to get back with the car so I can get him to a vets before they all shut and see if he's chipped.

That's great that you could take him in and hopefully the dogs will remain besties. Do you have a baby yet too? Brave woman! At least they tire each other out I guess.

VampirateQueen · 04/06/2019 21:15

Thanks for the update OP, so glad you have taken him in.

Hearthside · 04/06/2019 22:08

I remember the thread too op .Lovely update 😍.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 04/06/2019 22:12

This is one of the nicest things I’ve ever read.

applesauce1 · 04/06/2019 23:18

I read this thread aloud to my husband earlier this evening and we both welled up. I've probably seen him cry under 5 times in 10 years together.

I later read it to my mum. She cried and I cried again.

I have so many feelings and emotions about this thread. Probably amplified as I lost my dog last Autumn while I was pregnant. Dogs are so special. People like you are even more special.

My mother had dementia. Oftentimes she thought she was still living in about 1970 when she would have been 40 yrs old even thought she was actually 87. The elderly neighbor lady might believed she was a young woman still and the strange man in her house would have been very upsetting to her, especially if she temporarily forgot she had a dog.

My mother asked me very quietly one day, "Ann, where's my mother"? Her mother died in the early 1980's. I was the only one who could understand her confusion, others would try to get her to snap out of it. I told her mum was in heaven, singing with the angles. We're all atheists so I don't know why I said that but I couldn't think of anything else. If she asked her sister or my sister where my dad was they would say, "Don't you remember, HE'S DEAD"! I hope my answer was kinder.

If there is a heaven my mum is singing with her mum now.

Jemima232 · 05/06/2019 01:29

@ameriamm

Your answer was a million times kinder, I promise you.

All people with dementia ask where their (long-dead) parents are. They all also say they "want to go home", which means they want to be back in their childhood home where everything made sense.
It is wicked and cruel to tell people that their parents are dead. For people with dementia, this is the first time they're hearing this.

Just tell them their mother or father is still alive.

MadisonAvenue · 05/06/2019 02:00

OP, I’m so glad that Chessie has his forever home with you Flowers

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 05/06/2019 02:07

@Freezby That just made me cry, for a whole host of different reasons. I hope you are now his forever home.

Empathy56 · 05/06/2019 02:56

SusieQ5604 · 05/06/2019 03:56

ThisIsNotMyRealName1 · 05/06/2019 04:21

Oh Freezby bitter-sweet maybe but a lovely outcome for Chester and his new family. This deserves a pic for sure! :)

sashh · 05/06/2019 08:05

Thanks for the updateOP I also didn't see this the first time.

But am I the only one who saw this, he was a Good Dog. oh, wait. he also once peed on a corpse, but that’s another story.?

I want to know the story and also why no one else asked about it?

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 05/06/2019 08:11

Lovely update. Awaiting a photo patiently.

Userwhatevernumber · 05/06/2019 08:19

OP why can we not have a pic of Chester? Seems a bit fishy

EmMcK · 05/06/2019 08:32

Shameless placemark as stumbled on thread and OP seems so lovely and I want the neighbour and the dog to be okay.

Cataline · 05/06/2019 08:40

@Userwhatevernumber In this whole lovely thread, you appear to be the only one behaving like an arsehole. DFOD.

OP, that is a gorgeous update although obviously very sad about your neighbour.

EmMcK · 05/06/2019 08:40

Oh OP. Actual crying is happening right now in New Zealand. You sound like an amazing woman and while it is bittersweet, it is beautiful.

feathermucker · 05/06/2019 08:42

OP is under no obligation to post a photo.

It's bittersweet, and sad about the elderly lady, but nice that the doggo has found his forever home. It's like it was meant to be.

feathermucker · 05/06/2019 08:43

Userwhatevernumber

Nothing fishy about it.

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/06/2019 08:43

I think a picture was originally posted but the OP had it removed once the dog's owner was identified.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 05/06/2019 08:51

Oh that’s so sad and so lovely. I loved your thread and am glad to know somehow fate was taking a hand. May his precious owner RIP and am sure she would be happy to know her DDog is loved and safe.
