There's a dog in my house

There's a Labrador in my house and I don't know where it's come from. DH appears to of left the back door unlocked by mistake, but it was shut? He's at work and knows nothing about it, I've just got home from work and I have acquired a dog. Collar but no ID tag. What is going on?! How did it get in?! Can labradors open and close doors? My little King Charles cavalier spaniel seems to think he's his new best friend so has obviously enjoyed this unplanned play date (thank god a friendly dog decided to break into my house and not an aggressive one) no idea how long this lab has been here but house has been empty besides our dog since 11am. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I'm baffled. Waiting for DH to get back with the car so I can get him to a vets before they all shut and see if he's chipped.

Lots of X-posting.

Just seen your update, Freezby, that's rather worrying if the dog belongs to the lady with dementia Sad

Notwiththeseknees · 14/01/2019 17:27

Have a look on Doglost UK. There are also various dog groups on FB who have members with scanners to help in situations like this. Someone, somewhere is probably missing him hugely.

Penninepain · 14/01/2019 17:27

Oh Freezby, that is sad.....

Does he look to be well cared for? He might be the last bit of normality she is hanging onto.
I have 2 labs, a male black (dopey but loving) and a female yellow (frighteningly clever- opens doors with ease amongst other stuff....)

I believe they will keep me going to the end, so dont be too quick to write her off if dog is well cared for.

Good crack for your dog though, just imagining what they got up to 🤣

PositivelyPERF · 14/01/2019 17:27

I would genuinely check the other rooms in your house in case the poor old lady is in one of your other rooms.

Photos please.

KurriKurri · 14/01/2019 17:27

My mother used to have large wire haired dachshund - one day he wandered off and got into someone's house - she had gone out and accidentally left her door unlatched. he ate all her cat's food and fell asleep on her kitchen floor.

She got a huge surprise when she got home - she told us she thought at first he was a seal (to be fair it was an easy mistake to make - my mother overfed him). He did have a tag so she just returned him.

Hope you can find your labs owners soon, but sounds as if he his happy meanwhile.

PositivelyPERF · 14/01/2019 17:27

Of the dog, that is, not the old lady! That would just be weird.

WeeDangerousSpike · 14/01/2019 17:28

Oh dear. I think maybe you should pop over and make sure she's not had a fall in the garden or got herself into any trouble that's led to the dog escaping.

I wouldn't take the dog in case he's not hers though!

KurriKurri · 14/01/2019 17:29

Oh - just seen lady with dementia is a possibility Sad- my Dad had dementia, he might very well have put a dog into the wrong house - he got very confused about places.

KitsandCaboodles · 14/01/2019 17:31

At least your visitor is polite. Our last canine guest(Escapee terrier) was adorable but pissed up our patio door blinds and wiped his poo covered bum all over the rug.

PloddingOnwards · 14/01/2019 17:31

Surprise Gift from your partner maybe ?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/01/2019 17:32

Yes Labs can open doors. My Goldie & my Bernard both can too.

Can we please have a picture?

I had a Lab turn up in my front garden last spring. She'd let herself out of her back gate, 1 of the dc had forgotten to put the padlock back on. She was lovely, perfectly happy for me to shove one of my leads on her & sat there enjoying the attention for the 10 mins it took her owner to arrive (phone no collar).

PUGaLUGS · 14/01/2019 17:32

We need a pic or it didn’t happen! 😁

Evaevie · 14/01/2019 17:33

You have to keep in touch with the owners so the dogs can keep having playdates

rememberatime · 14/01/2019 17:33

We had a tiny Ginger kitten turn up in our living room once. Our front door was open, but we lived in an upstairs flat. So this tiny kitten made its way in the door, up a steep flight of stairs and into our living room. it was gorgeous, but after going round all the neighbours, we had the rspca come collect it... our own cat was not impressed.

Mammylamb · 14/01/2019 17:33

No advice. Just following as I need to know what happened

babysharkah · 14/01/2019 17:33

Oh op, I wonder if she didn't put him there but has forgotten to feed him so being a lab he's been clever and gone looking for food.

You need to get him scanned.

CantWaitToRetire · 14/01/2019 17:34

The vet will charge a fortune and then say it was for lab tests Grin

PattiStanger · 14/01/2019 17:34

Don't found dogs have to be reported to the local dog warden, maybe it varies by area but someone always posts this advice on my local facebook groups whenever a dog is found.

SnowdropFox · 14/01/2019 17:34

Our spaniel ran off once whilst on a walk. We heard her barking quietly at us from an upper window of a nearby stately home! No idea how she got in but thankfully she hadn't trailed muck everywhere!

KitKat1985 · 14/01/2019 17:34

Do you know what house the lady with dementia lives at? Could you go and knock on her door and ask (and subtly assess whether she can cope with the dog if it is hers)?

KarenDarling · 14/01/2019 17:34

I love this thread Grin

VampirateQueen · 14/01/2019 17:35

My DD would love it if we found a random dog in our house. Sounds like it could be the old ladies, she could have gotten confused, gone in your house with the dog, not recognised anything and left, forgetting the dog.

Lavender00 · 14/01/2019 17:35

I'm just commenting as I need to know the outcome!

CantWaitToRetire · 14/01/2019 17:36

Maybe the dog was already loose and it followed the dog walker when she returned your dog and got into your house without her somehow seeing? Trying to think of a logical way for it being there.

Carlyrichards · 14/01/2019 17:37

I am so jealous! Why doesn't this happen to meeeeeeeee??
