There's a dog in my house

There's a Labrador in my house and I don't know where it's come from. DH appears to of left the back door unlocked by mistake, but it was shut? He's at work and knows nothing about it, I've just got home from work and I have acquired a dog. Collar but no ID tag. What is going on?! How did it get in?! Can labradors open and close doors? My little King Charles cavalier spaniel seems to think he's his new best friend so has obviously enjoyed this unplanned play date (thank god a friendly dog decided to break into my house and not an aggressive one) no idea how long this lab has been here but house has been empty besides our dog since 11am. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I'm baffled. Waiting for DH to get back with the car so I can get him to a vets before they all shut and see if he's chipped.

Hope the mystery gets sorted! Love a Lab :)

Freezby · 14/01/2019 17:49

She didn't have much to say about how he got in here. DH insisting we return him but I'm getting a bad feeling about it. She wasn't looking for him

Re opening doors mines a lab whippet x and also opens doors

sillysmiles · 14/01/2019 17:50

Bit worried but it's not my place to say she shouldn't have a dog really is it..
But it might be nice to call on her and talk him out for a walk occaisionally for her

wLuytgNx · 14/01/2019 17:51

Freezby - Maybe post a letter through with your house number, name and contact number advising that you'd happily have him if looking after it was too much for her and verbally advise the same when you drop her off.

Carlyrichards · 14/01/2019 17:51

Can you suggest to the owner that you "look after" the dog at your house?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/01/2019 17:51

Oh dear.

Can you keep an eye on him in the future, OP, carefully of course, you don’t want to upset the old lady?

donajimena · 14/01/2019 17:51

No keep it! For tonight at least. The lady must have a contact for someone who looks out for her.

madvixen · 14/01/2019 17:51

Exwifebeginsat40 I see your Labweiler and raise you and 80kg Rottweiler who let himself into a neighbours kitchen and was found sitting at the kitchen table, with said neighbour, eating a bacon sandwich 😂

He only ever peed on Marines though, not corpses.

OP, please keep an eye on the dog, it sounds like she might be struggling to cope and just popped him at yours given that you already have 1. I wonder how long he's been coming over for doggy dates though

Freezby · 14/01/2019 17:51

@sillysmiles Yes of course but we pay a dog walker on weekdays but will offer to help where I can. Can't afford to pay for someone else's dog unfortunately Sad

Oh yikes.

Does she have a carer you can intercept to speak to? Or family?

donajimena · 14/01/2019 17:52

Actually scrap that, she might go looking for him in a more lucid moment.

KitKat1985 · 14/01/2019 17:52

I guess you have to take the dog back. Could you drop a (anonymous) report to the RSPCA explaining the situation and maybe they could do a quick check that the dog is being looked after?

Freezby · 14/01/2019 17:54

I didn't go, sent DH to do my dirty work (my grandpa had dementia and I just remember how awful it was, don't want to go down there full of pregnancy hormones and end up crying Blush) he tried to ask about carers and she kept saying she's fine and trying to get him to leave. Not sure what to do now. He should be back in a minute so will come up with a plan

I'd be reluctant to try take the dog off her. If she is still living independently - this dog may be a grasp on life for her and if he doesn't look neglected I'd say just keep an eye on her and the dog.

recklessgran · 14/01/2019 17:57

Oh bless her heart - perhaps she got confused and popped in to yours for a cup of tea whilst you were at work and left her lab behind when she went home. Do your houses look similar from outside? Does she have anyone round about keeping an eye on her OP? How very sad but so lovely that you're trying to help. Love the elderly and this has made me a bit teary.....

dontticklethetoad · 14/01/2019 17:57

WHY DOES THIS SORT OF THING NEVER HAPPEN TO ME??? Grin

Rinoachicken · 14/01/2019 17:57

Is it definitely her dog? If she wasn’t looking for him/didn’t know he was lost, maybe her dog wasn’t lost and is safe at home and she might now have TWO labs?!

Depends what your DH asked. Do you have a lab? Yes? But no mention of him being lost?

concretesieve · 14/01/2019 17:58

We had a cat who could open the internal house doors - and frequently did so Grin (And call me potty if you like, but I swear I saw her open one once for our other cat*.)

Sorry to hear about the lady with dementia.

  • They were always great friends. Cat 1, as I've said, never had to meow at a door as she just opened them herself. Cat 2 had a lovely purr, but not much of a meow, and would just settle comfortably by the door and gaze at it hopefully 'til you noticed him Smile Anyway, I was going upstairs one day and saw him settled in by the bedroom door. Cat 2 came strolling along, saw him and promptly opened the door for him!
anitagreen · 14/01/2019 17:58

@KurriKurri I'm absolutely howling at the seal comment you've really brightened my day honestly GrinGrin

WatcherOfTheNight · 14/01/2019 18:01

Aww @Freezby ,someone must be missing him ,he's very handsome.

I know I'd be lost without my boy .

There's a dog in my house
Deleriumdreamer · 14/01/2019 18:01

Shamelessly adding a comment so I can keep up to date lol

ApolloandDaphne · 14/01/2019 18:01

It doesn't seem like a good scenario all round if they lady has dementia and can't care for her dog.Hopefully you can keep an eye on things.

gamerchick · 14/01/2019 18:01

I think I would give SS a ring and ask them to go and see her. She might not have much in the way of looking out for her.

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2019 18:01

Pic up on local Facebook page for over an hour

Why have you ignored all the requests to put the pic up on here? Confused
