There's a dog in my house

There's a Labrador in my house and I don't know where it's come from. DH appears to of left the back door unlocked by mistake, but it was shut? He's at work and knows nothing about it, I've just got home from work and I have acquired a dog. Collar but no ID tag. What is going on?! How did it get in?! Can labradors open and close doors? My little King Charles cavalier spaniel seems to think he's his new best friend so has obviously enjoyed this unplanned play date (thank god a friendly dog decided to break into my house and not an aggressive one) no idea how long this lab has been here but house has been empty besides our dog since 11am. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I'm baffled. Waiting for DH to get back with the car so I can get him to a vets before they all shut and see if he's chipped.

Isn’t this how cats get adopted? Grin

hamtoastiesandpickledeggs · 14/01/2019 17:18

@itbemay I panicked a bit at first thinking someone somewhere was expecting a lazy pug back and had got an overexcited slightly bouncy beagle! But after I realised what had happened I did have a good laugh (and some pug cuddles!)

Topseyt · 14/01/2019 17:19

Also put word out on any local FB or DogLost pages.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 14/01/2019 17:19

This is one of the oddest things I've ever read on MN - and also one of the cutest. Also shamelessly placemarking to find out what happens!

Didiplanthis · 14/01/2019 17:19

My old lab escaped and went visiting next door. They found her upstairs having a good nose round having eaten a sock !!

exWifebeginsat40 · 14/01/2019 17:19

i once worked with someone who was having a very hungover Sunday when a large ginger cat sauntered out from under his bed. he didn’t have a cat.

he vaguely remembered meeting a ginger cat on his way home the night before, but had no recollection of bringing it home until it scared the bejesus out of him the next morning.

all ended well as the cat turned out to be a local, but he said it was VERY confusing for a few minutes there, and he did wonder briefly if he was in the wrong house.

i don’t think he drinks any more,

I went out & found a donkey on my terrace one time. & the gate was shut !!!! does that trump a lab ?
my Pointer can open doors no problem, including locked sliding doors.
I think the dog must have followed your dog walker & got left behind.
Ring the local vet before they close & say you've got a spare lab at yours

Aprilshowerswontbelong · 14/01/2019 17:19

Wasn't there a thread last year about a ddog that visited a farm regularly?! Great big gentle giant if I think right.

Smeeeeeee · 14/01/2019 17:20

My lab opens doors. If she gets out of the garden she pops round to friends houses and lets herself in.

Maybe lab let him self in and someone saw your door open and kindly shut it?

GnothiSeafton · 14/01/2019 17:21

What a funny and sweet thread - can't wait to hear the outcome!

Freezby · 14/01/2019 17:21

Someone on local Facebook group just messages to say an old lady down the road with dementia has a lab. Would she of just put her dog in my house? If it is hers do I still go via the vet as she's very poorly and I didn't realise she had a dog. Or is that not really my place to get involved? I've not spoken to her but I know DH found her out walking alone late at night saying she was looking for her mother a few months ago so he called 101 just to get some help and return her home. She's in her 80s from what I'm aware.

Have checked our lab is still here. But he would make himself at home anywhere. He regularly goes off with anyone that shows him any attention and the promise of a biscuit. He also regularly eats his tags with my name and address on.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/01/2019 17:21

I'm more inclined to think your dog advertised on the doggy equivalent of Air B n B and the Labrador is on his holidays.

Did he come with suntan lotion and a swimming costume?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 14/01/2019 17:21

Maybe I could try this. “No honestly, darling DH. This lovely dog was just HERE when I got home.... can we keep him PLEASE.....”

Don’t think it will work ....

MrsTommyBanks · 14/01/2019 17:22

@Aprilshowerswontbelong yes, I remember that thread. It was lovely.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/01/2019 17:23

Ah x posted Sad

I'd go and see her but keep the dog at home. She might be in a bad way and need reporting to SS for help (check the dogs had food)

Haffdonga · 14/01/2019 17:23

This is much better than all the kitten in my garden threads.

Labs might not open doors but they do like a good meal. Is he hungry?

babysharkah · 14/01/2019 17:23

was there a miniscule crumb on your kitchen floor and the lab managed to track it down?!

I'd take him to the vet to get scanned for a chip, his owner must be going beserk.

cantfindname · 14/01/2019 17:23

Envy I want one...

eniledam · 14/01/2019 17:23

The lab could have been wandering around outside your house and a passerby thought he'd escaped from your garden. Knocked on the front door with no answer, went round the back and discovered it open so shoved him inside?

I say this because DH took our dog for a walk last week and she decided to run off on her own adventure. Got woken up by the dog barking at the back door - a neighbour had found her and put her in the garden after I slept through the doorbell ringing!

GnothiSeafton · 14/01/2019 17:24

Ah yes, Aprilshowers. The OP lives in America, IIRC she posted photos of the enormous dog who had jumped up, playfully, at the OP's DH - the dog had his paws on DH's shoulders and was far taller (on his hind legs) than her DH!

HoraceCope · 14/01/2019 17:24
Envy i am jealous of the visiting black lab. perhaps you can offer to have her
KitsandCaboodles · 14/01/2019 17:25

If you can't get to the vet before it closes try your local police station. We've had to return too many dogs we've found wandering and the local police station have a scanner to read microchips.

Imalittleelf · 14/01/2019 17:25

Are they different sexes and both "done" because otherwise you might have some baby lab Charles crosses on your hands Grin

My friends dog could open and close doors....

fleshmarketclose · 14/01/2019 17:26

Oh you are so lucky, I wish I'd got a random lab turn up at my house. I did find a missing chihuahua on my walk the other day and she was lovely. Unfortunately I met someone who knew where she lived so had to take her home.
