To think that not many people have traditional Sunday roast anymore?

When I was a younger we literally had a roast dinner every Sunday and having something different was never an option. The roast was usually at my grandmas house and always followed by salad for tea.

So after preparing my meatloaf and jacket potatoes for tonight’s tea I was just wondering how many people still have a roast on sundays? Or did you have other food related traditions that you still follow now?

Just curious Smile

We have a roast most Sundays and miss it when we don't! The beef has just gone in mins ago, and the Yorkshire batter is in the fridge. I'll get on to the rest in a bit (once I pour myself a large glass of wine)

cojmum · 13/01/2019 16:29

We tend to have some kind of meat and two veg, with extras. Sometimes I do a full roast, but today we are having pork chops, mash, carrots, peas and Yorkshire's.

Just about to fish up. 8 for Sunday roast most weeks. Love having them all come and also dgc who say granny does the best gravy. Todsy, two large chickens, stuffing, roasties and mash, roasted cauliflower, carrots and turnip. Sticky toffee pudding and ice cream.
Someone else gets up and makes tea and biscuits.

One of the adult children brings me about 10 roasts every couple of months.

billysboy · 13/01/2019 16:44

My partner loves roast beef it about all they can cook , everytime we go to the outlaws they cook it
Sick to death of it and would much rather have a pizza or curry

cjpark · 13/01/2019 16:45

Yep, we have a roast every Sunday except in the summer when its BBQ dinner instead. Today is chicken which has been marinated in buttermilk and thyme with potatoes, stuffing, green beans and broccoli. It usually chicken as its cheaper. I buy meat by the carcass from a friend with a small holding so it depends what's in the freezer that month!
Half a lamb is coming this week so will be shoulder of lamb next Sunday. Yum!

OhFlipMama · 13/01/2019 16:46

We often do, as do our friends, but we're flexible.

I love roast dinners but because there are only two of us we have chicken, pork with crackling or lamb chump (with leftovers). Not always on Sunday lunchtime. It's easy to cook small roasts on a weekday if you get in from work about 6pm.

I love it when we go to my MIL's because she always does roast lamb shoulder. My mother always told me that leg was superior, which it is, but I do like MIL's cooking and I'm not going to argue with her.

She gets a dark, gooey caramelised fatty coating on the lamb which I've learned to like and her roast potatoes are moist and meaty because she cooks them round the joint rather than crispy and fluffy like my mum's and her magnificent lamb leg. It's different but equally good.

We had roast rib of beef one Christmas which was fantastic but even with three ribs you can't really do it for just two people even if you are prepared to eat lots of beef sandwiches and cold beef with bubble and squeak for days (which I am but my husband is not)

oldsewandsew · 13/01/2019 16:55

We have a roast about 3 times a year. Sundays are always busy days, out having fun with the children! I can’t think of anything worse than staying in cooking every Sunday!

shecamefromgreece · 13/01/2019 17:32

@PoutySprout I'm very pleased for you, however not everyone is able to do that.

StartedEarly · 13/01/2019 17:36

I wouldn't want to have to do it at lunchtime, wouldn't be hungry enough either.
I get bored eating the same thing every week
I'd love to know how to have a different menu every day without sometimes having something twice in a fortnight. A Sunday dinner isn't exactly the same every time. I do a different meat each week and the veg will vary.

sackrifice · 13/01/2019 17:38

We are veggies and have one every sunday unless something big like having no kitchen happens, and even then I'll do a one pot veggie roast in the remoska.

Bloody love them. Sets us up for the week.

HollySwift · 13/01/2019 17:39

We have one every Sunday, without fail, except in very hot weeks in summer. Then I usually roast meat and have it with boiled potatoes and salad. We’ve got chicken this week, pork was last week and I think we’ll have gammon next. I try to rotate joints and veg so it’s not the same every week.

We’re not massively adventurous with dinner though due to slightly fussy DC. Each week normally features a roast, a pasta on Mondays, sausages in some form, mince etc.

Amanduh · 13/01/2019 17:41

I don’t know anyone that doesn’t usually have one!

pilates · 13/01/2019 17:42

We do because I don’t get time in the week to do a roast.

Wilhelminawonka · 13/01/2019 17:43

Not always but for complicated reasons we had Christmas lunch today.
Which means that right now I'm having my Christmas sandwich and am the happiest I've been since last year.
Lightly toasted roll
Mayo, cranberry sauce, gravy
Turkey
Yorkshire pudding, roast pot and two types of stuffing.
With a pack of cheese and onion square crisps, a cup of tea and soon a piece of Christmas cake with cheese.

It's a happy day (does a sandwich jig)

MysweetAudrina · 13/01/2019 17:47

We normally do but the element in my oven blew during the week so its striploin steak, carrots, sprouts, mushrooms, onions, mash and gravy today:(

PipGoesPop · 13/01/2019 17:49

I reckon we have 2 a month in the winter at least, sometimes not even on a Sunday! Much less so in summer, maybe once every 4-6 weeks (I 💘 roast potatoes).

Got one in the oven now Smile

Spudlet · 13/01/2019 17:57

I hardly ever do a standard roast, although I do like to get the slow cooker out and do a special casserole for a Sunday. Haven't done so today as I'm very under the weather, but I have a pheasant in the freezer that needs eating so I might do it one day next week.

ButtMuncher · 13/01/2019 17:58

I grew up with traditional Sunday roast every weekend.

As an adult, I've rarely had Sunday roasts Grin My DS doesn't eat meat, and I can't be bothered to cook one Grin

Allthepinkunicorns · 13/01/2019 17:59

I make one every couple of months or so. My mil makes one every Sunday even when its a boiling hot day she will still have one. I personally can't see the point in having one every Sunday.

Sarahandduck18 · 13/01/2019 18:01

We do it maybe once every few weeks.

Curlyshabtree · 13/01/2019 18:02

We have one on the go too. Have one most Sundays in winter.
We use the leftovers for tomorrow night’s tea so one less thing to worry about about at start of the week.
I think it’s a pretty nutritious and relatively cheap family meal. I usually cook the bones up for stock too.

MiceSqueakCatsMeow · 13/01/2019 18:04

Every week. Although when it was really hot in the summer we had barbecue.
Soup with the leftovers on Monday.

cliffdiver · 13/01/2019 18:10

We have one most weeks.

Just finished one - chicken, pig in blankets, roasties, stuffing, roasted sweet potato, broccoli and carrots.

Forgot to ask DH to cook brussel sprouts Sad

Any other dinner on a Sunday feels odd.

Sweetooth92 · 13/01/2019 18:14

Through the winter every 3-4 weeks. None when it’s hot though and always eat mid/late afternoon. If it’s every week I just don’t enjoy it xx
