To think takeaway pizza at a 4 year old’s party is an odd choice?

Just that really. I’m not especially neurotic about what my kids eat. I’m happy for them to have the odd happy meal every couple of months or the occasional chocolate biscuit. But a pile of dominoes pizza at a party in a hall just seems a little much.?

I’m fully prepared to accept it if I’m being unreasonable because I can’t quite put my finger on why I wasn’t keen on this. Maybe it’s the salt. Anyway daughter is now asking for the same thing at her party next week and I’m really not sure.

Laurie Aragog got there before me. Its about quantity likely to be consumed as well as content per 100g.

Anyhow, I don't analyse my kids food, especially for parties like this! I do use common sense though. And no, this is not standard at this age. Getting more usual north of 8 or 9 I'd say.

RosemarysBabyDress · 12/01/2019 16:36

I disagree that the veg sticks are just for show, they have always been decimated every time we had a party - and so have the crips, sweets and cakes.

Junk food at a party, sounds reasonable, McDonald food for the kids would work just as well (maybe not logistically).

It's one of the reason why junk food is banned from my house, because the kids have plenty enough every time they have a party, which is pretty much every weekend. Completely fine that way!

adaline · 12/01/2019 16:37

And keep ds will eat how many slices of pizza v how many crisps? 100g crisps is 5 multipack packets.

Yes, but they're not going to eat just one pack of crisps either, are they? And how much salt and sugar do you think is in all the other normal party food? Sausage rolls, ham and cheese sandwiches, crisps, biscuits, sweets - how is that any better?

WorraLiberty · 12/01/2019 16:37

But a pile of dominoes pizza at a party in a hall just seems a little much.?

Yeah but your kid isn't going to eat the whole pile is he? Grin

seenna · 12/01/2019 16:37

I know what I'd rather have (not a fan of cold, soggy sandwiches).

ScienceIsTruth · 12/01/2019 16:37

Eating that all the time would be an issue, eg, if your dc was going to parties every single week or if you feed them pizza every week, but as an occasional treat, I think it's ok.
You'd probably be surprised how much fat/salt/sugar is in all the foods you'd normally serve at dc party anyway.

DeRigueurMortis · 12/01/2019 16:37

I admit to having done this for a few of DS's parties in the past.

DS has friends who are veggie and one that's gluten free - both of which Dominos cater for.

So frankly it made it really easy and all the kids could tuck into a pizza without some of the being singled out and having to have something different.

It's definitely not every day food and neither is it cheap (even with offers) but the kids loved it and tidying up was really easy (just dumped all the boxes in the village cardboard re-cycling bin.

seenna · 12/01/2019 16:39

I'm amazed people think pizza from Domino's is remotely comparable to a supermarket bought version...

I know! What brands are you all buying?

ninjawarriorsocks · 12/01/2019 16:40

It’s just one-off party food! They will likely eat a few bites, most kids at parties are too excited to eat much. Why all the angst? The more you make a big deal out of food being ‘good’ and ‘bad’ the more you are likely to create food issues in future. Yes your child will occasionally be served food at parties you would prefer they didn’t eat. Don’t make a big deal out of it, carry on cooking healthier food at home, your child will be fine....

ScienceIsTruth · 12/01/2019 16:41

Oops, posted too soon.

I do think it's unusual choice for that age group, especially if that's the only choice, but maybe the parents hate cooking or don't have the time or don't have a big oven. Could be a combination of those reasons, or anything really.

HettieBettie · 12/01/2019 16:42

St most hosted trampoline sights it’s dominoes. 👍

snowie01 · 12/01/2019 16:42

Unless your DC is at a pizza party every day then I wouldn't worry about it. I hate pizza so would have starved haha

Ultramic · 12/01/2019 16:44

4 year olds having a couple of slices of pizza at a part does not an obesity crisis make

You're being very naive. Habits are formed in childhood and encouraging 4 year olds to induldge in salty, fatty food at parties (everyone is saying this is 'normal' and I kids go to several parties throughout the year) doesn't sit right to me. Not when there are so many alternatives.

I wish as a society we took more responsibility so that a new 'normal' of healthier food options could develop.

It's lazy to order junk food, lots of PP have said its convenient. Great, but at what price?

Sirzy · 12/01/2019 16:46

Habits are formed which is why teaching children that everything is fine in moderation is right.

Do you really think it’s healthy to teach children that there are good and bad foods and they always have to eat “healthy” foods?

TooMuchWorkToday · 12/01/2019 16:46

Well personally, I'd serve the little 4 year olds quinoa, avocado and cucumber sticks, fresh fruit, and plain water. There would be no crisps or chocolate, and if they wanted something sweet I'd readily leave apples around the place for them to snack on.

Or not!..

Of course there should be pizza at a kids party!!! My DS had Dominoes for his 4th birthday party! Followed up with jelly and ice cream!! Went down a treat!!

I thought it was a genius idea if I do say so myself!!! Saved on prep and washing up!! :) And we ordered a couple for the parents too! None of whom seemed to think it was weird! They all seemed happy enough to be tucking in!!

Bring on the pizza I say!!! Halo

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 12/01/2019 16:47

The good old Mumsnet adage - junk food shouldn't be considered a treat. Should it be eaten every day then? The obsession of women (never men) with 'healthy' food for children is so DULL! Is it a competition at NCT meetings or something? It's a party ffs! It's a slice of Domino's not arsenic.

Venison · 12/01/2019 16:48

Ultra, what do you serve?

Putyourdamnshoeson · 12/01/2019 16:49

I love how it's Domino's or quinoa. Like there's no middle ground. Funny how those who shout about sticks up arses are usually totally lacking in nuance.

Serin · 12/01/2019 16:52

Its bread, cheese and tomatoes, its not going to kill them.
If you really hate Dominos go to Pizza Express or Pizza Hut!

If you serve with orange juice to drink and fruit set in jelly for pudding they will have even managed 2 of their five a day! Grin

3WildOnes · 12/01/2019 16:53

Ultra I’ve served dominos at a couple of kids parties. Not a single person in my family is overweight let alone obese. We eat take away pizza a handful of times a year. We normally make our own pizzas from scratch. My kids get their 5 a day and have at least one portion of leafy greens a day, almost all our food is home cooked and organic. I’m really not going to worry about our very occasional dominos.

daisypond · 12/01/2019 16:53

Sounds OK to me.

kmc1111 · 12/01/2019 16:53

I think it’s fine.

Yes it’s laden with fat and salt, but so is all the usual party food. Crisps, sausage rolls, mini hot dogs, mini pizza’s, assorted beige bites etc. A few handfuls of that stuff is no better than a few slices of takeaway pizza.

The pizza’s probably better for a lot of kids actually. It’s easy to keep grabbing stuff off a party food display without thinking about how much you’re eating. Pizza’s more of a defined meal, so you won’t get as many kids going back for more constantly, whereas with regular party food many will keep grabbing another handful of crisps or a sausage roll every time they’re near the table.

TulipsInbloom1 · 12/01/2019 16:54

It might not be standard but it's fucking genius!

Newdad19 · 12/01/2019 16:54

Id rather that than a tray of cut up cucumber and carrot sticks that no kids actually eat. Pizza is a fairly safe bet.

PlatypusPie · 12/01/2019 16:54

Pizza at a child’s party, fine - most children like it. It’s the messiness with the very gloopy and greasy Dominos brand that I would be wary of with 4 year olds .
