To think takeaway pizza at a 4 year old’s party is an odd choice?

Just that really. I’m not especially neurotic about what my kids eat. I’m happy for them to have the odd happy meal every couple of months or the occasional chocolate biscuit. But a pile of dominoes pizza at a party in a hall just seems a little much.?

I’m fully prepared to accept it if I’m being unreasonable because I can’t quite put my finger on why I wasn’t keen on this. Maybe it’s the salt. Anyway daughter is now asking for the same thing at her party next week and I’m really not sure.

I love the attitude that pizza at a party sets up a child for unimaginative eating habits. Mine are late 20s now and we had pizza at a couple of parties but given the choice they would have selected moules, oysters or snails. They were the birthday teas of choice. (August birthdays so we were usually camping in France).

We're having dds (4) next party at our local leisure centre im now considering a dominos delivery at food time - genius idea

thecatsthecats · 13/01/2019 07:56

I always insist on ordering pizza in for big groups/parties, as I can't stand the faff of reordering the pizzas in the oven, cutting them all, trying to ensure they cook evenly - and we have a big electric range so it's easier than most.

My only diva gripe from my hen party was that instead of ordering a few chunky pizzas in from the shop for about £30, my friends ordered a dozen smallish ones from Tesco and delivered them two cooked at a time (to 8 people, so one or two small slices at once), with increasingly chilly chips.

I fail to see the economy at £24 plus chips and electricity, especially when you factor in enjoyment, and that it fares far worse as morning pizza!

Cheekylittlenumber · 13/01/2019 09:03

I completely agree with Queenisabella.

I actively LIKE salad or crudités with my pizza. I don’t prep it for show, I like eating it. I feel greasy and grotty eating pizza without it.

It’s not much hassle to chop up some carrots and a couple cucumbers.

I grew up with adult and kid parties being varied (so as a kid I’d eat olives, all fish etc) whereas my husbands mum had a very limited diet (white carbs and fried food). At 16 when we had met he’d never eaten a prawn for example but it was much more extreme than that.

I think balance at any age is important to teach and to make it part of your daily routine which includes parties, they happen all the time and more as more as they get older.

I wouldn’t be horrified if I attended that party with just pizza, but i think for kids that young it isnt enough range. However, at a kids party when your kid is getting fed and entertained for free I certainly wouldn’t say anything, I’d just give them a balanced dinner that night.

AJPTaylor · 13/01/2019 09:06

Incredibly sensible is what I would call it.
Well done them.

HopeGarden · 13/01/2019 09:11

The pizza wouldn’t bother me at a party.

I’d have been a bit surprised to see a pile of Domino’s pizzas, but mainly because my assumption is that it’s an expensive way to do pizza.

Ansumpasty · 13/01/2019 09:22

YABU.

I did this for my 4yo and then 5yo two years in the run.
I included a table of fruit/pesto pests/carrot sticks etc for the children with parents like you, but pretty much every child loved the pizza.

It also fed the parents, so everyone was happy!

‘The occasional chocolate biscuit’ 😂

Ansumpasty · 13/01/2019 09:23

Whoops, typos galore

MaverickSnoopy · 13/01/2019 09:51

I wouldn't expect to see a stack of Dominos at a children's party but actually I think it's a great idea.

Likewise I didn't expect to be asked by one of the countries top academics to order 30 pizzas for a conference he was running. I didn't use Dominos but a local pizzeria who make almost identical pizzas. I phoned in advance and asked if they'd do a discount due to the order size. They gave a huge discount on top of their normal offers. Something to consider if you do go ahead.

Tessabelle1 · 13/01/2019 17:25

A ham sandwich on white bread probably has as much salt tbh. Pizza is my go to when kids come for tea as even the majority of fussy kids will eat it so it's perfect for a party

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/01/2019 17:27

Completely BU
Everyone does this round here . Saves time !

Everyone does the obligatory plate of carrot sticks don’t they ! Fortunately I can compost mine Grin

Ribbonsonabox · 13/01/2019 17:29

I'd be a bit worried about the salt... but tbf a 4 year old is not going to consume that much pizza and if it's a one off it's fine. My 4 year old had a piece of our takeaway pizza when we moved house the first night we were there. It is unhealthy due to oil and salt but I dont think in the grand scheme of things it's any worse than ice cream and sweets which is a usual party favourite... plus it's far more filling so the child is not likely to eat loads of it like they would with unlimited access to sweets.

MamaLovesMango · 13/01/2019 17:32

This is an excellent idea. Why haven’t I thought of that! DD is going to be 6 soon, I’m doing this! I don’t see how it’s any worse than cheap ham sandwiches, hula hoops, wotsits, party rings, iced gems and chocolate fingers. Any kind of salad always gets ignored and the kids just help themselves to extra junk instead. An average child will eat one slice of a dominos large pizza and if cucumber and tomato slices and carrot sticks are available, it sounds like a more than acceptable spread.

ChubRubTheStruggleIsReal · 13/01/2019 17:33

Daughter is 13 and I’ve served Costco pizzas at every single one of her parties since she was 2. So so easy! Labour unintensive. Always gets eaten. Fills the kids up after running round a farm/trampolining/swimming for an hour!
Job done.

TheCherries · 13/01/2019 17:37

I literally breathed a sigh of relief when I discovered when my eldest was age 9 that takeaway pizza was an option for parties.

All those years of prepping birthday teas. Takeaway pizza = genius. Get to enjoy the party, seeing your child have fun getting involved in all the activities and no food prep or packing away.

Win win.

If you are going to be accepting play dates when you send your child to school and they stay for their tea then you need to lose this hang up. By year 1 parents are dishing out fast food from the freezer to ensure it appeals to the majority.

user1472482328 · 13/01/2019 17:39

Why not make your own pizzas. You can buy the bases and put on them what you want . Put passata on them and then put whatever topping you think best .

squeekums · 13/01/2019 17:40

Who would have thought dominos could cause such a stir
Great idea, id do it

I must be the only person who never bothers with a fruit or veg platter. Its a party, who cares, chips, chocolate, pizza, sausage rolls. Fast, easy, cheap and bugger all clean up
Remind me to never say how often we eat mcdonalds or show a pic of my pantry.........

celticprincess · 13/01/2019 17:42

Have a friend who has regularly done this for parties. Not all the venues have an oven so supermarket pizzas don’t work if you want them hot. Fresh takeaway pizza delivered in time for the tea has always worked well and is always eaten with little waste. Probably cost effective too compared to buying loads for a buffet that gets wasted. And yes the parents will always eat up what’s not eaten by the children.

nannygoat50 · 13/01/2019 17:43

Fine happens a lot. Very easy option which the kids love

delboysskinandblister · 13/01/2019 17:45

I can see it from the parents point of view. It's kids party they are tiring and the parents want to enjoy not having to cook / prepare food. Just dial a Dominoes! The kid probably chose it.

No-one's going to get their 5 a day from a kids party anyway. It's a treat.

I had my party on the train at McDonalds with nothing but burgers, fries, shakes, ice cream.

CatnissEverdene · 13/01/2019 17:51

For 4 year olds? Gross. Salt and fat laden shit basically.

I wouldn't feed it to my dogs let alone my kids.

pollymere · 13/01/2019 17:52

Have some bowls of tomatoes and carrot sticks as well. Should be fine. My dd didn't eat pizza at that age as she didn't like it...

toria6118 · 13/01/2019 17:55

Perfect choice tbh, I would do it. Zero effort needed.

Curlyruth · 13/01/2019 17:56

I think that’s a brilliant idea. And look how memorable it was for the kids if your childbirth is asking for it at her party. Good for them.
