To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

We have breakfast on a Monday, beer on a friday, a counsellor who comes in once a week and you can just book into her (the best thing IMO), dog days, work from home whenever, 2 weeks in an international office with free travel and accomodation (our offices are sydney, West coast USA, JP, London), wild christmas party, the odd free product comes around on a trolley (think tea, cans of Pop, cleaning products - think its a work perk scheme) 6m fullpay and 6m half pay maternity/paternity.

Its a private tech firm. Worked civil service previously and it was grim.

Current job, free tea, coffee & juice. Pension, buy extra holiday, discounts for some purchases or services. Xmas party. Free life insurance, some private healthcare. Free parking. Ability to have lots of holiday/time off due to working shifts. Opportunity to work overtime.

marieneedsaholiday · 14/01/2019 12:40

I get health insurance, decent pension, work nights always paid for in full including taxis too and from home (about 2-4 a year), I have paycare which covers costs for up to certain amount for dental, optical, physio etc and includes a GP over the phone service and cheap cinema etc. I work in a gifting company so I get 10 gifts free at Christmas of my choice and various other freebies, left over stock etc throughout the year.

goodwinter · 14/01/2019 15:22

I'm thrilled by what my company offers even though it's not as sexy as free beer.... Very generous pension contribution, employee discount at various places, WFH, and lots of wellbeing stuff e.g. free Headspace subscription for 2 years, subsidised gym subscriptions, free tea/coffee, on-site seated massages every so often (£10 for 20 mins), free health checks, a brilliant employee assistance program... we even had a trial of nap pods in the office recently! Also incredibly generous maternity/paternity leave.

Work for the NHS. I get free tea and coffee. Well at least I think it’s free, or perhaps I’ve just been helping myself to someone else’s stash.

shelikesemwithamoustache · 14/01/2019 15:29

Free tea/coffee/cake/biscuits/fruit
Free lunch
Free gym / swimming pool
16 weeks holidays
Good pension
Private health care
Work from home if/when required (I prefer the office)
Flexible working if time off required for kids school / medical etc.

yearofthehorse · 14/01/2019 19:20

Years ago worked for a tech company with it's own hot air balloon, so regular balloon rides.

di2004 · 14/01/2019 19:25

None. Zilch. Zero. I work for the NHS.
Enjoy your freebies while you can .. they don’t usually last.

RedPanda2 · 14/01/2019 19:33

NHS worker here so absolutely nothing. We've had to buy our own kettle/microwave & toaster for the kitchen. Sometimes we don't have water for hours on end. Why am I still working there...

HoraceCope · 14/01/2019 19:41

Also NHS worker, most days we have heating, but it is not guaranteed.

daisypond · 14/01/2019 20:26

NHS workers get good pensions, though, compared to most of the private sector - you might not realise.

Linzbe · 14/01/2019 22:29

I work for a small online retail company. We have free tea, coffee, milk, there is normally a tin of chocolates / cakes / biscuits floating around too.
28 days holiday, an extra annual leave day for your birthday plus a extra day for each year you've been at the company (after 5 years service)
50% off retail prices.
2 (paid for) Staff parties a year for Christmas / company birthday
I've been there just over 6 years, bloody job my job!

Christmasfairy07 · 14/01/2019 22:35

I only work 4 hour shifts so am not entitled to a break but if I was, tea & coffee is provided in the staff room & people sometimes put a tin of sweets, chocolates or biccies on the table to share. We get a 25% discount on many items (I work on The Range) & 10% on others. I don’t actually know my holiday allowance but I did pretty well for time off last year.

Christmasfairy07 · 14/01/2019 22:36

In the Range I meant!

thebigmaniswatching · 14/01/2019 22:38

I get around 70% off a large range of high end cosmetics, 25% discount in store, invite for mammogram every year when I hit 40, 7 weeks holiday per year(no BH entitlement though, it’s included in that balance), free products when they launch. There’s worse jobs I could be doing!

Bluebellsarebells · 14/01/2019 23:22

Free lunch and drinks everyday.
Subsidised parking.
Mostly flexible working, so dropping hours over school holidays, can use any days as off days or holidays.
All expenses paid party for Christmas including drinks.
Other various paid for nights out over the year, some of these are performance related, summer one always happens.
Good training and progression.
Sometimes sweets, cakes, donuts.
Lots of chances to win recognition for hard word, incentives to win random prizes.

Bluebellsarebells · 14/01/2019 23:24

Ooh I forgot 30% discount on off days and up to 20% off at loads of other places, mainly restaurants and clothes shops.

singingismypassion · 14/01/2019 23:24

Free food, drinks and parking

Movinghouseatlast · 14/01/2019 23:41

Long haul business (or first if lucky) class travel. It has ruined me! I cannot contemplate long haul without it. Which means I won't be able to go, as I couldn't afford it myself!!!

SushiMonster · 15/01/2019 07:51

Free tea and coffee from a vending machine (so not very good)

Subsidised lunch prices in the canteen (main meal about £3)

Pretty flexible - I would never take holiday for Dr or Dentist or anything like that

MrsBombastic · 15/01/2019 19:32

I work for the NHS: I've just had my ultrasound abdo moved forward by 2 weeks... does that count? 😏
