To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

Public service

Decent pension - although not as good as it was when I started

Sick pay - again much more stringent absence procedures and lower percentage pay for less amount of time

Flexi time

Ability to work from home on occasion

10 years ago or more I also had good pay standards in comparison with similar jobs in private sector but not any longer

barnet · 13/01/2019 20:20

Free coffee, flexi hours (work when u want as long as do your 40hrs), tennis court, LOTS of sports clubs, incl. kayak, sailing, diving. plus yoga, pilates, zumba etc. Fruit basket. Sauna in the changing rooms. Free charging for electric cars. And a fabulous location on the waterfront.

GuidoTheKillerPimp · 13/01/2019 20:28

Public sector. You’ll be pleased to know that your taxes are not being squandered on staff perks. Don’t even have tea and coffee at training events any more.

bobdylannumber1 · 13/01/2019 20:42

Death in service 3 times my salary my health insurance paid, good pension scheme 30 days holidays plus bank holidays 6 month sickness benefit, 18 week s maternity pay free unlimited tea coffee well stocked canteen.2 nights out a year Christmas party with free bar.

caringcarer · 13/01/2019 20:42

When i worked at independent school. 16 weeks paid holidays, free nice lunch everyday, all hot drinks latee etc, free cold squashes and Belgian buns on Fridays. Also fab end of term pressies from parents and if a student you taught got an A * (55%) you got lots of bottles of champagne. Drive into and from work was 1 1/4 hours of trafic hell though.

fitgirl26 · 13/01/2019 20:42

I work for a small local charity. Zero perks but a lot of job satisfaction!

caringcarer · 13/01/2019 20:43

Traffic

NotBeforeCoffee · 13/01/2019 20:53

I am in austerity hit public sector role so get absolutely nothing. Not even a biscuit.

A friend works in a very well known huge global company that doesn’t pay their taxes and she gets a sushi chef coming in to make them fresh sushi, fridges full of ice cream and everything else to help yourself to, breakfast lunch dinner and drinks, snooze pods, anything your heart desires, etc etc etc on top of being paid 2.5 x more than me

Bad life choices...

purplebunny2012 · 13/01/2019 20:55

I work at a university, so we get learning vouchers that can be used towards some courses or sports facilities. We get our Christmas lunch paid for each year (including drinks reception and one glass of wine). Some health benefits.
That's about it

PinkPanther27 · 13/01/2019 20:56

@ghostyslovesheets
Also public sector, I'm jealous if your building is always heated Wink

whyarentiskinnyet · 13/01/2019 20:56

Very flexible working including working from home whenever needed. Can bring dog to work. Snacks every day. Fruit every day. Breakfast once a week. Drinks once a week (Friday). Nails once a week (you have to pay but they come to the office to do them).

Sedrett · 13/01/2019 21:00

Everyone works from home so no office based type perks but we have flexi hours and you get a budget to buy office stuff of your choice, so which monitors, desk to buy etc for your home office.

pinkstripeycat · 13/01/2019 21:22

We used to get love to shop vouchers as incentives and pizza during exceptional busy periods to keep moral up. Managers were disposed of and now we get no bonus, no incentive and no pizza and everyone is leaving

AmIthatbloodycold · 13/01/2019 21:32

We're the same Guido. I'm on a course next week and we have to pay for any drinks.

A PP listed all the things they got and said "but we work HARD"

Well, so do I and I'm sure lots of public service colleagues also do

I don't get paid for the overtime I do, and the work I take home. We are just expected to get on with it

Oh I forgot, we have a zip tap, so we don't have to waste time hanging around waiting for a kettle to boil. That's nice ISmile

ghostyslovesheets · 13/01/2019 21:40

PinkPanther27

give it 6 months and we'll be paying for it as an optional perk - like parking, tea and coffee and hand soap in the toilets

Teacher22 · 13/01/2019 22:55

There were no perks in teaching but the pension was not dire. When I crashed with burnout after 33 years full time on the trot I was able to leave five years early with the loss of a quarter of my pension.

Not so funny when my DH was made redundant and was unable to get another job.

BunsOfAnarchy · 13/01/2019 23:00

Free sanitary protection. All loos have a sink in the cubicle too.

SummersMumma · 13/01/2019 23:29

Company Car, Fuel Card, Laptop, Mobile, IPad, Pension, Bonus Scheme, Birthday off, various functions throughout year, paid meals and accommodation for all travel. Cannot complain.

Ahardyfool · 14/01/2019 00:06

I’m a long term contract worker for a very large and very well known (in the US) global company so I’m actually an employee of an agency (they like to do this) under direction of this company. My company gives very few perks to employees like me and pretty poor perks for direct employees (my DP was an employee until redundancy over a year ago. I work from home other than a meeting once a month at the head office (often cancelled in favour of webex due to travel restrictions by the company) so that is the main perk. However, I work as hard from home if not harder as I hardly dare go for a wee in case a client or colleague rings (Work From Home Paranoia!). The company seem to imply that being allowed to work from home is a hefty perk of the job even though I was employed on this basis (cost cutting again - they don’t need to supply a desk for home workers). I have to buy all my own stationery, pay for internet and phone line for work (just use my home internet and phone). I do get a mobile and laptop but that’s it. When I started here 7 years ago on an office based contract, we had a gym, gym classes, subsidised dining rooms, subsidised Costa coffee and so on. All that has gone.

Sissyjd · 14/01/2019 03:00

Naff all...Ok flu jab, rubbish nest pension contribution and at xmas the crappy drinks vend is free for a day or two..drinks are usually 20p and taste like it!!

Subsidised massages
Subsidised work activities such as a choir, softball, football team
Free cake for all those who have a birthday that month
Usual cycle to work, season ticket loan
Private medical insurance, life insurance
Access to a private park within Regent's Park

Love where I work!

Shopaholiccmum · 14/01/2019 10:14

Coffee, tea, fruits and once a week some sweets. The big plus is also that I can work from home;).

SockQueen · 14/01/2019 10:27

NHS - Free (v. basic) tea and coffee, decent pension, lots of chocs/biscuits donated by patients/relatives, especially on labour ward. When I was in as a patient, being induced with DS, being a member of staff meant I got a side room, and I knew I'd never have to wait long if I needed an epidural as I had all the anaesthetists mobile numbers! Wink

That's about it, wouldn't do anything else though!

Namedrama · 14/01/2019 10:34

Public sector so no lavish perks as it’s all tax payers’ money. I do have to travel to quite a few exotic locations and I enjoy that, if it’s trans Atlantic or trans Pacific and we are willing to work within 12hours of landing then we fly business class which I enjoy. I’ve been criticised for flying business class on the public purse but if you can’t sleep on the flight then you need to go out earlier to sleep before you work and that costs more in hotels and food.

ralfeesmum · 14/01/2019 11:04

I once worked with a firm that had a coffee/tea/soft drinks dispenser in reception for which we were given (yippee!) unlimited tokens - the stuff it dispensed was the most appalling dishwater, so it was more of a penalty than a perk!
