To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

Local government so zilch, we do however get free water from a tap which is a luxury. My h gets loads free breakfast all drinks throughout the day, free fruit, massages once a week loads of social activities for the whole family where everything is paid for. Free ice cream and free sweets.

Cornishgorl44 · 13/01/2019 18:18

We get nothing at all well unless you count the mouthful of Schloer the head gave us alll at the Xmas dinner (paid for by us ) and a shed load of hassle Hence I’m leaving

mrscee · 13/01/2019 18:19

The h also gets bupa health insurance which he does pay a small amount into but it covers the whole family and also covers dental too.

Lifestyleinlondon88 · 13/01/2019 18:22

We don’t get anything. They even stopped our Christmas parties (even though it had already been paid for), took away casual Fridays, increased our hours on Christmas Eve, have given us a whole other companies work to do (double the work load and no extra pay), took away the gym, closed the subsidised canteen, we are allocated our holidays they are not chosen, we have no team outings, our role has been stretched to include so much I can’t really put a name to what I am doing anymore and to be clear - They are a huge company with tremendous profits but as asshat for a managing director.

Lifestyleinlondon88 · 13/01/2019 18:23

*an asshat

Sorry I have rambled but can you tell why I’m currently looking for a new role?

IchWill · 13/01/2019 18:28

@Aaaahfuck Yeah I deffo think no dress code is a perk. All those years I spent hundreds on suits etc, clothes I would never wear outside of the office. 😅

Mummadeeze · 13/01/2019 18:33

We have a pool table, it is a nice break from work sometimes. My main perk is being able to watch TV whilst I work though. I feel lucky to be able to do that. We also get free yoga and Zumba but that is because nice people who work with us have volunteered their services for free.

alfiesmam · 13/01/2019 18:34

Work from home whenever possible
Paid mileage
Incremented salary
Laptop / mobile / Projector
30 days AL
Pension after 6 months ( you pay 1/2 they match )
Paid lunch if on the road
Overnight stays where needed

My last job was terrible . So inflexible it was a huge deal to get any time off and we only got free tea & coffee with a miserable 30 minute lunch break

Mulberry72 · 13/01/2019 18:34

DH’s job has amazing perks. The usual pension, healthcare, WFH etc.

Free cinema (including DS & I), free lunches, clothing subsidy, but the best thing is when he goes abroad with work (worldwide) DS & I get subsidised travel and accommodation if we go with him, so we’ve been able to travel quite a lot and been to some really interesting places.

Ourmaud · 13/01/2019 18:41

Free broadband,iPhone with the bills paid for personal use, company car, travel and hotel discounts, Xmas and mid year party with paid bar, work from home most of the time and decent bonuses.

Galena · 13/01/2019 18:43

13 weeks of holidays per year (although some working from home expected during them) and gifts at Christmas and in July.

Also the 'gifts' of headline and germs throughout the year.

DonnaDarko · 13/01/2019 18:43

Private sector.

Absolute sweet F.A

theSnuffster · 13/01/2019 18:53

I work in a nursery. We pay slightly reduced childcare fees if we want our child to attend. They provide tea/ coffee/ squash. The company pay towards the cost of our Christmas night out. I think that's about it!

rebbles · 13/01/2019 19:04

I’m a teacher so nothing. In fact I have to pay for a lot of stationary and activities that I want to use in lessons, we pay for our own tea and coffee and milk too.

Wholovesorangesoda · 13/01/2019 19:05

Free tea, coffee and other hot and cold drinks from a standard vending machine and heavily subsidised ones from a 'proper' one. Subsidised staff canteen. Discounts on many retailers Inc groceries/days out/cinema/gym memberships etc. Reasonable pension. One completely funded day out a year, with 3 course meal and free alcohol. Flexible(ish) working.

I love the perks we get and have worked for many places with no perks so definitely appreciate them! Used to work somewhere with no dress code and free lunch every day but the job was shocking so it totally didnt make up for it

Halffullhalfempty · 13/01/2019 19:06

Head teacher.
Good pension. That's it really. Some will say that 13 weeks non contact time is a perk, however, if the hours worked over the year are averaged outweigh get about 5-6 weeks holiday per year and a 40 hours per week. So much the same as many. At least half of every 'holiday' is spent working, planning, redecorating, organising classrooms, research etc.
We also get to spend time with our own children during school breaks (if the holidays are the same), although we get to pay the highest premiums for any holidays.
We are also allowed to spend as much of our own money on resources (including paint for walls, and doors, pens, paper, commuters, iPads etc) as we want (lol!). On the plus side, the children and most f the parents are fab!😉 As the Head, I (not the school)also buy occasional treats for the staff; cakes, fruit, something for an individual so that they get some perks.

Halffullhalfempty · 13/01/2019 19:08

Sorry, 'averaged out we....)

5BlueHydrangea · 13/01/2019 19:17

NHS - the occasional free pen, and excitingly I got a free tote bag when I started my current job. Has the name of my employer on it but never mind...
Oh and nearly forgot, I give injections so have a little stockpile of spare (sterile and unused don't worry) needles so if you ever have a splinter I'm your woman!

Louise2092 · 13/01/2019 19:24

My work don't pay for breaks or offer company sick pay (first place I've worked that doesn't offer these). They do however have fruity Friday one Friday a month where a load of fresh fruit is provided (the grapes and strawberries are like gold dust though). There is a drinks machine which is free for tea and coffee and 20p for hot chocolate. We also have a points park system where each employee has 500 points to award to anyone in the company per month and you can put the points towards things like gift cards, holidays, items such as iPhones, ps4 games, kitchen items etc. The lowest point value item is a £10 gift card which costs 1731 points. We also get free use of the gym/pool/sauna/steam room at the hotel along the street which should cost £60 per month for a membership (it's tiny though, but city centre). I've had bonuses in other jobs and overtime incentives etc but this job is less stressful and it's near my sister's work so I get lifts to and from work 4 days out of 5.
They also do a yearly award ceremony type thing where you can nominate someone who shows certain qualities and they win £500 paid to a charity of their choice, 50,000 points (equal to about £260 in gift cards using the point system) and they and a partner/parent/Friend etc get to go to that years destination for a short break along with the other winners. There is a winner from each office- about 20 ish total- and the destinations used to be placed like Barbados, new York Cancun, las Vegas etc.... really nice places. The last few years it's been pretty much Canada as that's where majority of offices are and it's cheaper to fly 10 people out there than to fly 40 elsewhere.

Still an ok company though - we do a lot for charity and some teams get good incentives.

GreenShadow · 13/01/2019 19:38

Zero in the way of financial perks (not even free drinks) but I do work somewhere with amazing views.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 13/01/2019 19:41

My boss! Super easygoing, doesn't care if you nip out to Asda (next door) or ask for a specific day off, as long as you ask him BEFORE he does the rota Grin not that I'm ever a pain in the arse Oks pretty much whatever you want in the way of holiday and will back his staff up with aggressive customers.

Allgoodnamesaregone · 13/01/2019 19:47

Seriously cannot believe the one that has to pay towards the kettle being boiled...that's shocking.
I teach....so a good pension & 13 weeks holiday...but the holidays are unpaid & you do work through some of it.
We get free tea & coffee at the mo, but the coffee pot is often empty so I take my own.
With teaching I think it's more about what you take from home, rather than what you get from work!
We used to get free buffets on training days but haven't lately. Next week we are doing parents evening all in one day (2-7pm) for the first time, so 5 hours of talking to parents nonstop...management are bringing us a cuppa & a choccy biscuit! (Which you won't have time to eat as busy talking, & daren't drink as no loo break!)

Tweez · 13/01/2019 19:47

Government....free hot water, cold water ( though not always filtered correctly) free wi fi. Soap in the loos. Flexi time. Able to work from home. Decent leave allowance, but pension paid into and not that great really, not nowadays. Freezing building, so we sit in our coats in Winter shivering, hence why working at home is often better.

loz85 · 13/01/2019 19:59

I get 25% discount in store, 25% online but 10% if it’s named brand.10% off in the Starbucks in store and a uniform allowance. I haven’t been there long enough yet for the perks at work scheme so unsure on what that involves

windysocks · 13/01/2019 20:00

Self employed here - no perks ( unless i pay fir them myself!) 😀
