To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

Private medical insurance
Non contributory pension
Death in service
Sick pay
Buy/sell holiday
Corporate discounts website for cheap cinema tickets, travel discounts etc
Preferential rates on the products/services we sell (financial services company)
Free tea and coffee

waywardfruit · 13/01/2019 09:31

I can eat my own weight in biscuits if I like Grin

All the cable ties and rigger gloves anyone could ever need in their lifetime are there for the taking...

Glitterinmykeyboard · 13/01/2019 10:56

NHS.

I work in an office full of doctors and surgeons. So I never have to go to a GP, I just ask them. Get bumped up any referral lists because all the secretaries help each other out. Sense of making a difference in peoples lives. Even though i'm just admin, I know when I go home at night someone is sleeping better because I helped them with results, or an appointment or spoke to the surgeon for them (I work in a cancer speciality).

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 13/01/2019 11:01

@ItsQuietTime oooo what job is that? Grin

I work 12 hours a week and live in a cottage rent free in return 😀

Ethel80 · 13/01/2019 11:08

Absolutely nothing. Oh hang there is a cold water point which is better than tap water I guess. I have to pay for parking, tea, coffee.

I still wouldn't change it though, I'd rather do my job than work in a huge company and get free yoga.

Ethel80 · 13/01/2019 11:09

It would be nice to get a free lunch or something now and again but it'll never happen unless the individual manager paid, which some do apparently.

LaLaLanded · 13/01/2019 11:10

Pension; death in service; can buy holiday, Christmas bonus (small but nice); free fruit; onsite gym/dr/physio; free tea/coffee... which I would describe as ok.

Previous job had all those things (but better) as well as free food, corporate credit card, and free products (courtesy of the consumer goods division) plus free movie tickets. And a nicer office. BUT less flexible working - I appreciate being able to work the hours I want within reason and to work from home when I choose.

firstbrightday · 13/01/2019 11:13

We get coffee, tea, milk, lunch bought whenever there is a board meeting, a fabulous Christmas party often with a night in a gorgeous hotel, a summer do, lots of baked goods from the director who is a keen baker, coffee bought from a nearby artisan coffee shop every so often, free eye tests, leniency for docs appointments, a choice of start/finish times. It's a really lovely company to work for.

firstbrightday · 13/01/2019 11:14

Also a really nice Christmas present!

IchWill · 13/01/2019 12:16

No dress code at my job (office based), so I wear jeans and Converse. We've got senior managers / heads of departments with visible tattoos piercings and blue hair, appearance doesn't hinder a person's professional profession.

Employee diversity is excellent where I work, we have some severely disabled employees that are completely supported in their jobs.

A decent payrise every year, which isn't performance or results related.

Flexible working, start and finish pretty much when you like, (department depending), as long as you do your 37 hours. My boss also often chips off at 3pm to get back for her kids, then logs in from home and works.

In my last department, people used to work extra time Monday to Thursday and finish work for the weekend at lunchtime on Friday.

We get 41 days paid annual leave too. Which is awesome.

IchWill · 13/01/2019 12:17

*personal progression

That should have said.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/01/2019 12:33

Discounted gym membership is the only tangible perk. However, I can work from home when I want and set my own hours (meetings permitting). This can cause some issues though... There's about ten of us across the organisation who can do this. I tend to do a split day and go to the gym mid morning. There's been a bit of uproar as some people think only parents should have this benefit. It's not going to change though.

strawberriesandsugar · 13/01/2019 12:37

Work in a school.

Holidays but don't get paid

Parent gifts are a nice bonus but not expected

Time flies when you work within a school

Busybusybust · 13/01/2019 12:44

my son is currently enjoying a weekend in a very, very posh Paris hotel (think £1500 per room per night)with his girlfirend courtesty of his company

Ollivander84 · 13/01/2019 14:37

Free tea/coffee/milk
The odd pizza/Starbucks
If you pester the manager enough he will go and make brews or get you a McFlurry or Starbucks
Christmas meal out and £50 drinks allowance
Staff meal paid for once a month

halfwitpicker · 13/01/2019 14:38

Loads of hot men, who are often hot and bothered
Free coffee
Good parties

halfwitpicker · 13/01/2019 14:38

Ooh yes, WFH occasionlly which is fun

Ollivander84 · 13/01/2019 14:39

Oh and pension and free parking
Free wash and vac of my car once a month
Cat parts/service/oil etc all at cost price

ForalltheSaints · 13/01/2019 14:40

Tea and coffee is unlimited and available when we want.

Working from home on the odd day is OK, so if you have gas man or someone similar coming, you don't need a day off.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/01/2019 14:44

Fab Christmas party.
Fab Summer BBQ
Tea, coffee, free fruit once a month.
Feelgood Friday (free hot lunch) minthly.
Free private medical insurance.
And best of all....free will writing.

Neverender · 13/01/2019 14:50

Nothing now but used to work for a large restaurant chain's head office and do competitor testing which, essentially, meant loads of free food and drinks whenever we wanted. Toxic environment though.

Then moved to a vehicle manufacturer and got a free car for a few yrs.

Parsley65 · 13/01/2019 14:55

My DP used to work for a famous chocolate company. They had a fridge full of the stuff in his office and could help themselves to it all day...
They also had a staff shop, so he'd regularly come home with boxes of DC's favourites for a fraction of the usual price.
I miss those days...
