To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

In a prev job where I had to travel a lot for a particular project, the client paid for business class long haul flights but we were able to collect the air miles. Got a LOT of miles from that project!

Wishiwasincornwall · 13/01/2019 15:35

Previously working in a private care home we all saw it as a perk if we were paid correctly and on time. At times it really did feel like the owner took great pleasure effectively making the peasants beg for his charity our hard earned wages.

Hubanmao · 13/01/2019 15:38

Teacher here. I did get free entry to museums and exhibitions in Spain this summer. And as a teacher you can get certain software free. And where I teach we get free yoga and well being sessions several times a term. Oh and a few local coffee shops and restaurants give us a discount. The main (massive) perk is the gold plated pension, good lump sum and index linked pension for life- which I intend to take full advantage of come July! But even that isn’t nearly as good for younger teachers since the pension reforms.

Aaaahfuck · 13/01/2019 15:43

I didn't think of not having a dress code as a prerk. But we don't have one really. I mean I think stained clothes you'd use for DIY are probably not ok but otherwise you can wear whatever.

Schoolchoicesucks · 13/01/2019 15:43

Free tea, coffee & milk
Minimum employer pension (so guess that's not really a 'perk')
Flexible & home working
Paid for Christmas meal with pre-drinks and a 'fun' activity

This year, they are planning to offer
-Enhanced maternity pay (won't affect me)

  • paid for training
  • increased holiday after 2 years service
labazsisgoingmad · 13/01/2019 17:13

my partner and i run a firm just the two of us so we get no perks what so ever dp might buy a coffee and mars bar now and again

icedgem85 · 13/01/2019 17:28

Free booze and food every Friday - and we stop work at 3 but get paid until 530 and it’s basically a party. Regular meals out, at least once a fortnight. Can play music out loud in the office. Loads of events, free concert tickets etc. Video game tournaments in work time etc. Lots of prizes too!

StrawberryDaiquiriPlease · 13/01/2019 17:30

May be able to bring DS into work if necessary (i.e. he has an inset day) or I am usually able to ask for time off to take him to very important doctors appointments that connot be made outside of school term dates. They provide tea bags and coffee - we bring our milk though. I work in a school.

Inexpertjuggler · 13/01/2019 17:36

I know the workplace they’re talking about, worked there for a short while. Everyone there is self-employed, and pays a fortune for facilities they were promised, including the beer. Cheapest there is £350pcm for hot desking, so I can understand their annoyance tbh. There’s a big kind of lounge/common room area, with tea/coffee/snacks/ beers and table tennis areas. So you could take a client for a beer within the workspace., rather than a bar that could be too noisy/ interruptions from randomers etc. There’s uproar from what I hear at the beer news

Mary54 · 13/01/2019 17:37

Self employed so no perks. Pay for own pension and health insurance (live in Germany). No paid time off for sickness or holidays but I can work with my dog sitting next to my desk

Fowles94 · 13/01/2019 17:39

Free food and drinks all day but nothing other than that.

Groovee · 13/01/2019 17:39

The only perk I get (nursery) is free unlimited lurgies/cold/sickness.

user1485851222 · 13/01/2019 17:44

Free breakfast, free tea, coffee etc, well-being room with massage chair, family fun day, free Christmas party, both with free bar. Christmas free prize draw for the 25 days leading to Christmas, Free counselling sessions, work relared exams paid for, pension, free shares if you buy shares, flexible working, bonus for returning to work after maternity leave, sick pay.

Liketoshop · 13/01/2019 17:46

I've worked for the NHS since 1978....nothing. A Christmas meal, drinks... Paid for by consultants or management? Nope. Early retirement at 60? Now you're talking!

Angeliki159 · 13/01/2019 17:49

Variety of tea and coffees, cans of fizzy drinks (all sugar free)
Ice creams everyday in summer
pizza, beers, cakes (loads of blooming cakes!), costa, takeaways to celebrate a product launch.
Free parking 2 months in a year.

manicmij · 13/01/2019 17:53

Local Authority - absolutely nothing. Would be sacked if accepted any gift from member of oublic eg an apple pie had to be refused. Private companies obviously spend a lot to keep staff happy.

Icouldbehappy · 13/01/2019 17:56

Another teacher here.
No perks apart from a decent pension and great holidays (which is great for childcare).
And I will happily admit that I love getting presents from pupils and I could tell you who gave me which cup; some go back 25 years! Grin

Though it’s nice to know that I can leave at 3pm if I want/need to.

haverhill · 13/01/2019 17:57

Free food and drink. So lunch bought every day, effectively. Free parking. Decent pension. 18 weeks holiday.

KonekoBasu · 13/01/2019 18:02

Pretty good for flexible working and excellent for time off at short notice. Tea and coffee provided, reasonably high pension contribution. Mostly treated like adults and allowed to manage our own workloads.

On the other hand we all have to put up with some unreasonable behaviour from management...

londonrach · 13/01/2019 18:02

I be grateful for the perk of going to the toilet (nhs worker). Maybe some chocolates patients bring in which gets us through the day. Biggest perk though when everyone gets better. Best feeling ever!

flojo73 · 13/01/2019 18:07

A fabulous team of collegues & a job I love.
Nothing material.
NHS..

alltoomuchrightnow · 13/01/2019 18:09

Discounted Daim cheesecake in the staff canteen is a good one
As is, having a staff canteen, never worked for anywhere that had one before
Another one who finds going to the loo ' a perk' as the loo is so bloody far away on another floor in a huge building and can take 20 minutes to get there due to being stopped by customers!

Justkeeepsmiling · 13/01/2019 18:10

The only perk I get from work is getting paid at the end of the month, oh, and going home at the end of my shift lol

teachergirl2011 · 13/01/2019 18:11

Absolutely nothing!!! School Teacher!

Villageidiots · 13/01/2019 18:16

Pension, private medical care. Professional fees. Sometimes takeaway lunches. Funded nights out and big xmas parties. A pay day pub lunch monthly. Think that's it.
