Stolen Bin thread

I have one of the larger council issued bins as I have 4 children , my neighbour also does though their bin is far older as they have grown up children .
I clean mine after each collection with bleach etc so it’s still fairly new looking .
I realised last week we have a stinking mouldy one instead now so been watching on bin collection day and realised my neighbour has swapped them over .
Now this could be a mistake I highly doubt they haven’t noticed theirs is now cleaner and bigger , so today is the day I’m getting it back . The man next door can be strange so I’m relauctant to approach him to ask for it back as I think he won’t back down so I’m just going to do a swap as soon as they are emptied , currently lying in wait .... wish me luck .

I need to know more about the bin - has the neighbour come back? Is your bin safe?

Tiredmumno1 · 11/01/2019 21:36

Hi
I’m the wheelie bin op belongs to.
I have feelings too. Stop discussing me like I’m not here.
I’ll choose my home thanks very much.
Your not the boss of me.

I have a hessian bag for cardboard, a couple of years ago it disappeared on bin day. I asked next door if they had seen it as they get thrown over into the gardens once empty and can sometimes end in the wrong garden. She said she hadn't seen it, didn't have any reason to doubt her so I ordered a new one.
A couple of days later she came round with our bag and her 7 year old son to get to him apologise as he had taken it by accident (her dad had already put hers in the back and she didn't know and her son picked ours up thinking it was theirs). Not long after that our newly ordered one arrived.
So we have had two for a few years until after Christmas when we had so much cardboard (DS's toys) we had to use both bags. Bin men took away our ratty old one but were nice enough to leave our newer one. Oh well, it came in handy for a while.

AliMonkey · 11/01/2019 22:22

Anyone else amazed by the 7 year old in Figment's story actually helping take the bins in? Not sure why the mum got him to specifically apologise himself given it was a honest mistake caused by him trying to be helpful!

Still waiting for @ichifanny to come back.

HerdofAntilop · 11/01/2019 22:27

At least it's someone else nicking your bin - mines desperate to escape. I think it's because we're in a cul-de-sac - the wind gets it no matter where I put it. Last time it happened it ganged up with a bunch of shady looking recycling bins and surrounded m my neighbours car!

Biffsboys · 11/01/2019 22:38

One time my bin hated us so much it threw itself into the bin lorry !! We thought someone had stolen it until a brand new one showed up 2 weeks later .

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 11/01/2019 23:29

I came back for neighbour news...
I miss my old neighbours who put mine out when I forgot!

cheval · 11/01/2019 23:43

Paint in large figure your house number. I once had to hunt down recycling bin. Found it a street away. No idea how it got there.

mumof2andstillsurviving · 12/01/2019 00:24

Any news on this bin?

Pashal2 · 12/01/2019 00:40

I'm sorry, why can't you dump the dirty water down the street drain? (A bin is a garbage can, correct?)

Pashal2 · 12/01/2019 00:46

I'm not in the UK. Your local government actually provides all the their residents with a garbage can (bin)? Can you purchase your own or must you have The one they issued?

Maisymoo22 · 12/01/2019 01:38

We’re waiting very patiently OP.

Dilligaf81 · 12/01/2019 01:47

paschal2 yes each local council has a system for waste and recycling collection.
We pay a monthly sum to local government for this service and also have dumps to take larger waste to.
My council won't collect bins they haven't issued but will let you put one extra black bag out with the fortnightly waste collection.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/01/2019 03:03

None of our neighbours would be batshit enough to steal our bins. They stink anyway.

The last part makes no difference - there are good and bad people in both the stinky-neighbour and the non-stinky-neighbour communities Grin

SpoonBlender · 12/01/2019 03:18

@paschal2 They're these: www.google.com/search?q=wheelie+bin&tbm=isch

They're standardised so that the rubbish truck can have a mechanised arm that grabs two bins and flips them over into the trash compactor, then sets them down again. They're issued by the local council, though many places you can (if you're mad, because why?) buy your own - but they're colour coded for different things, so if you did you'd have to buy the right colour.

TheRealJoseph · 12/01/2019 03:22

I really don’t need 3 bins and have no idea what to do with them.

They're great for storing Lego (other building blocks are available Grin), knitting/sewing stuff etc. inside.

chardonm · 12/01/2019 03:23

Exciting !

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/01/2019 03:25

I'm always amazed at the dedication of the regular bin-cleaners. Some people even actually pay companies to come and clean them every time (although they always just seem to put a huge, logo-ed, tight-fitting bag in them, which keeps them clean anyway, so they're effectively being paid to come each week to change a great big bin bag).

The older couple who live opposite us always give their bins a thorough deep-clean after collection and then leave them upside down, lid open on the drive, to drain and dry off - which always looks like they've been very naughty and are being condignly punished.

Bearing in mind that the green one should only have contained clean mixed recycling and the brown one garden waste, which is just natural outside materials that stay outside - they don't see the need to keep scrubbing it clean whilst it's out there still growing, so it can't be that offensive.

Even with the general waste/landfill bin, all the contents should have been in tied-up black bags, so it can't get that bad - especially as it's always going to live outside anyway. I can understand that you might need to give them a periodical clean if bin juice escapes from the bags and accumulates and, of course, if food waste in the Summer attracts a swarm of disco rice - but every single fortnightly collection?!

They're always so desperate to take the bins back in as soon as the bin men have been. I couldn't care less, but I've started to make it into a game and try and beat them - see who can Win The Bins Grin

Everybody needs a hobby Grin
