Are a size 10 or above?

My friend has suggested that my new year resolution should be to slim down and tone my body - st first I was offended, but I actually think she was genuinely trying to be helpful or perhaps, motivational? Grin

She’s a size 6 having focused on exercise/diet last year and lost 2 stone! I’m a size 10 and eat whatever I like Grin she thinks that once I’m 40 it’ll be hard to maintain my weight unless I join her as a fitness fanatic Hmm

AIBU to think that most of us over-35s are a size 10 or above though. She’s the exception not the norm - her lifestyle seems tedious as she lives at the gym.

I'm 38 and a size 10/12. I wish I was thinner and a size 8 but don't have the time or motivation to make it happen

bringincrazyback · 09/01/2019 17:44

Your 'friend' sounds like a rude cow who is probably unhealthily thin if she's a 6.

Size 10 is slim as far as I'm concerned!

PiggyPlumPie · 09/01/2019 17:44

I am 47 and a size 12 but I am 5 foot 9 so actually quite skinny.

Too many variables...

RuthWilder · 09/01/2019 17:45

Everyone’s different. In general your metabolism slows as you age, but there’s way too many variables to make such a generalisation about size over a certain age.

Stringofpearls · 09/01/2019 17:46

Not much of a friend.

Bombardier25966 · 09/01/2019 17:46

The average for an adult woman is a 14 or a 16 depending on your point of reference, and as that covers younger women too then the average for a 35+ lady will be higher than that.

Work with what is best for you. I'm a small 12 and look awful if I lose weight.

thinkingaboutmyage · 09/01/2019 17:47

I honestly think she’s bought into the whole body sculpting craze and is trying to convince everyone else. She follows all of the muscle women on Facebook too so they’re always popping up on my newsfeed, which makes me feel bad as I see them when I’m on the sofa (eating chocolate) Grin

Size 10 means absolutely nothing. There is no standard, it's just a label for clothes, used inconsistently , and there are huge variables.
She's talking nonsense.

AlbertWinestein · 09/01/2019 17:48

I’m in my mid 40s and I have had to radically overhaul my diet and exercise routine as I felt sluggish and was putting on weight easier all of a sudden. So annoying!

AmphetamineGazelle · 09/01/2019 17:49

I am 35 and a size 6. Am 2kgs heavier and a slightly different shape since having DD 4 years ago. Mainly round my middle. I think the size thing is relative to what you were before and might apply more to the majority of women who have had DC.
Some women however always stay the same shape.

BasinHaircut · 09/01/2019 17:51

if I were smaller than a 10, at 5ft 10 I imagine I would look incredibly ill. I’m a ‘good 12’ at the moment and people still tell me I’m too skinny.

Klobluchar · 09/01/2019 17:52

Your ‘friend’ sounds awful. She isn’t trying to help you at all, it’s all about her. Maybe you could suggest her New Year’s Resolution should be to stop interfering. That would be genuinely helpful.

thinkingaboutmyage · 09/01/2019 17:52

Albert, so this is her point. She thinks unless I make the effort now, my weight will gradually creep up after hitting 40?

I have a feeling she wants me to go to the gym with her for company, and that might be motivation her to make me panic Wink

Agree with @Clionba. "Size 10" is a vague indication at best.
And your friend sounds kind of dull and ill-informed

Meh. Clothes size means nothing - it's your BMI and waist/hip ratio that truly reflect health.

That said, it's really rude of your friend to suggest you need to lose weight, it's up to you.

Doje · 09/01/2019 17:52

I'm 38, quite fit (exercise 3 times a week) well within a good BMI range, but at 5'8" I'm not ever going to be a size 8.

I fear she may have a point though, that after 40 it might get more tricky to maintain weight.

thedevilinablackdress · 09/01/2019 17:53

Just saw your latest message... metabolism generally does slow as you get older.

NewerMoreBoringNameFor2019 · 09/01/2019 17:53

I’m nearly 40 and my plan for aging is actually to try and put a bit more weight on and plump out the wrinkles from the inside. I’m aiming for ‘Nigella before she divorced Charles’.

recently · 09/01/2019 17:54

I'm mid forties and a size 10 but I am too fat imo! I wish I could get back to the size I was five years ago so maybe she has a point!

lanbro · 09/01/2019 17:54

I'm 38 and I'm a 10, without really having to watch what I eat although I'm pretty active in my job. I've taken up running and have toned up in the last few months but the aim was to improve my fitness rather than my weight

HildaZelda · 09/01/2019 17:54

I'm 39 and a size 6-8.

recently · 09/01/2019 17:54

Newer - the problem is that all my weight is on my middle. I still have the wrinkles!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 09/01/2019 17:54

I have a friend who is 43 and a size 4-6. She eats very sparingly and does smoke so that suppresses appetite. She is short though.

Jamhandprints · 09/01/2019 17:55

39 and size 14, 5'8". I'd like to get to a size 12, that's when I look best.
