Are a size 10 or above?

My friend has suggested that my new year resolution should be to slim down and tone my body - st first I was offended, but I actually think she was genuinely trying to be helpful or perhaps, motivational? Grin

She’s a size 6 having focused on exercise/diet last year and lost 2 stone! I’m a size 10 and eat whatever I like Grin she thinks that once I’m 40 it’ll be hard to maintain my weight unless I join her as a fitness fanatic Hmm

AIBU to think that most of us over-35s are a size 10 or above though. She’s the exception not the norm - her lifestyle seems tedious as she lives at the gym.

She’s rude.

soulrider · 09/01/2019 18:24

I wasn’t a size 10 even as a teenager.

Neither was I, but I am an 8/10 at age 38. I'm more or less the same size but a 10 is bigger now than it used to be.

xsquared · 09/01/2019 18:24

She may have a point about weight gain and age, but it's none of her business what you eat and what dress size you are.

NotGenerationAlpha · 09/01/2019 18:25

I don’t know most women. But I am 44 and I fit size 6/8.

MikeUniformMike · 09/01/2019 18:27

I eat what I like and am over 35. I try to not eat unless I am hungry. The size depends on the shop.
Bought something size 8 in a well-known high street fashion chain shop at the weekend and it's huge on me.
Sizes are much bigger than they were 20 years ago.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 09/01/2019 18:28

I'm 37 and a size 12. I was an 8 before children but have gradually gained weight during each pregnancy that I've never shifted.

Bythebeach · 09/01/2019 18:30

I’m 40, have had 3 kids and am size 6..... Boden/Next definitely in not H&M😂. My tummy is trashed by overstaying enormous (for my frame) baby no 2. I am 5kg heavier than when I had just had DS1 (ages 27 - snap back into shape that age!) and heavier and less toned than I’d like but 3 kids, work and DH working away in the week leaves little time or energy to address it and I look slimish in clothes. BMI 20.5 although for midgets like me BMI comes up lower than it should but hopefully rough guide it’s healthy enough. My mother and her 5 sisters have retained size 6-10 throughout their lives into their 80s though so I have a good example and genetics in my favour. If I feel completely overstuffed, I semi fast for a couple of days (500 calories) but can’t manage a consistent exercise or diet regime as no willpower.

cheapskatemum · 09/01/2019 18:32

I'm slimmer now than I was pre-40, without any extra effort or anything. Now aged 58 & size 10, spent my 20s & 30s in size 12 or size 14 clothing. You sound really happy as you are, I'd ignore your friend if I were you.

Bertiebitch32 · 09/01/2019 18:35

Op unless you are under 5 ft you sound gorgeous! If it would make you feel better loosing a bit then why not. I like my food to much iam 5ft 6 inches in height 9 st 11lb and after having 2 kids with a shelf after a c-section I'm a saggy size 12 Blush

Dontcarewhatimdoing · 09/01/2019 18:38

I'd agree that the weight tends to creep on after 40, it has for me at least, having previously always been able to eat what I like and stay slimish. I can't see what you'd gain by pre empting that like your friend seems to be suggesting though. I just cut down a bit if I've put on a few pounds, and so far, am managing to stay around the weight I've always been. Do what works for you, not your friend.

Bloomcounty · 09/01/2019 18:41

Building muscle is excellent. That's my personal goal for this year. I would agree that it's better to do it sooner than later. I was stronger when I was younger, but a decade of serious health problems have left me with low muscle tone and I am going to have to work really hard to regain what I can. Lose fat, not weight. Build muscle. Strengthen your bones and joints whilst you're young and naturally stronger. I couldn't give a stuff what size the label in my clothes says, but I do care that I cannot currently hold my own body weight in a plank.

ShowOfHands · 09/01/2019 18:42

I'm 38 and a small 8, occasionally a 6. At 10 I am too big.

I have 7 female colleagues over 35. Two are a size 8, one size 10, two size 12, one 14 and one 16.

Shadowboy · 09/01/2019 18:43

I’m 35 and I’m an 8.

Fairylea · 09/01/2019 18:47

I think there are lots of women aged 35 plus that are slim but I would imagine the vast majority of those really restrict how much and what they eat.

I was a size 8 until I was about 25ish, used to be able to eat whatever and whenever I liked. Between 25-38 (38 now) I’ve gone up to a size 14-16. I can’t be dealing with trying to cut down what I eat so the weight has piled on. I am very active though. I do think i will have to do something eventually though otherwise I am going to keep growing and growing ....

LoubyLou1234 · 09/01/2019 18:49

I'm nearly 40, I have to exercise regularly and eat well/healthily for a good amount of the week. If I don't weight would pile on. I don't begrudge myself of treats but feel better for eating well and exercise is great for my MH. One of my best friends is an 8/10 and does bugger all/eats what she wants and always has. Just the way our bodies are.

AhNowTed · 09/01/2019 18:53

Your friend is a bore.

kateandme · 09/01/2019 18:53

good god then worry about it then.live in the now and enjoy eating what you like.your ot going to reach 40 and put on four stone overnight.
tell her to focus on who you are not how you look.
if someone was telling a size 10 to lose weight then they are horrid and hae problems.

kateandme · 09/01/2019 18:56

and if she is having to work to "sculpt" her body into that shape so hard then it isn't her natural state.
if you keep active and eat balanced and stil rise at 40 then it could still be how your body is meant to go.
you could be fitter and healthier than her at size 10 and above than her forced size 6

sanityisamyth · 09/01/2019 18:58

I'm 35 and definitely not a size 10/12!!!

CheeseTheDay · 09/01/2019 19:00

I'm 40 and a size 12.

If I put weight on as I get older, so be it. I'm 6ft 3, so can get away with carrying a little bit of weight, and actually I've been a size 16 at my 'biggest' and was still within (but towards the end of) the healthy weight range for a woman of my height. One of the 'tall perks'.

FridgeFullOfChocolate · 09/01/2019 19:00

I'm 35 and size 6-8, I've had 2 children the last 3 years too. I was a massive fitness fanatic before I had children, was very into running and did marathons. I think my pre-children fitness plus breastfeeding is what has enabled me to slim back without so much as putting on a pair of trainers. I really need to do more exercise for my health, despite looking very fit and healthy I haven't done any exercise in a long time.

Your friend's suggestion to take up more exercise is good, but I'd be doing it more for the health benefits than fitting into your jeans. You can exercise without it taking over your life, fitness classes a couple of times a week are good if you aren't good at motivating yourself.

tootiredtospeak · 09/01/2019 19:04

Worry about your health after 40 not your weight. A good diet and exercise will keep your blood pressure down and your heart fit. Sod what you weigh. 42 and a 12

InionEile · 09/01/2019 19:04

Well, I'm 41 and I don't notice any difference between my weight now and when I was 35. My metabolism is the same. I can fit into some size 8 clothes but am mostly a 10 and I'm fine with that. If I ate a very controlled diet and ran regular half marathons I could probably be a 6 but I don't value dress size that much!

I think your friend has body image issues that are her own and not yours so she IBU to project them onto you. And she's wrong that you automatically gain weight after 40. It's not necessarily the case. One thing I do notice though is that I can't tolerate alcohol at all now. More than 2 glasses of wine and I'm like a zombie the next day. I love wine but I'm finding after 40 that the hangovers and empty calories aren't worth it.

IRememberSoIDo · 09/01/2019 19:08

39 and a size 10. I weight exactly what I weighed pre kids but gone from an 8 to a 10 as my shape has changed and hips definitely widened after pregnancy.

thinkingaboutmyage · 09/01/2019 19:18

My friend doesn’t have DC but I do. When we were at school, she was quite overweight so I do think that part of it comes down to her own self-esteem issues and her worry about gaining weight.

She’s actually a really lovely person, but with a gym obsession Grin
