Are a size 10 or above?

My friend has suggested that my new year resolution should be to slim down and tone my body - st first I was offended, but I actually think she was genuinely trying to be helpful or perhaps, motivational? Grin

She’s a size 6 having focused on exercise/diet last year and lost 2 stone! I’m a size 10 and eat whatever I like Grin she thinks that once I’m 40 it’ll be hard to maintain my weight unless I join her as a fitness fanatic Hmm

AIBU to think that most of us over-35s are a size 10 or above though. She’s the exception not the norm - her lifestyle seems tedious as she lives at the gym.

43 and size 6 here, but a serious runner and eat accordingly.

SoftSheen · 09/01/2019 19:57

Your friend may be of naturally petite build and a healthy size 6, but size 6 isn't a healthy aspiration for the majority of women.

mirialis · 09/01/2019 19:57

46 and size 4-6 if proof be needed.. size 4???! I'm sure you are lovely and perfect but who the fuck knows what a size means now that we have adults in the UK being a size 4 which was always a primary school sort of size. If you live and work in different countries and so have to buy clothes in all sorts of places, you quickly come to realise that you are an XXS -XXL depending on where you are buying.

starzig · 09/01/2019 20:00

Depends on your height. When i am a size 10 I am still overweight. Size 6 is my healthy weight. Yes, a lot of over 40s are above size 10. But a lot of over 40s are overweight. This could very well be due to it being more difficult to maintain a healthy weight post menopause. There is also a certain level of looks not being as important when you are older. As you get older you value different things in life.

littlecabbage · 09/01/2019 20:00

I am so bored of people generalising about clothing sizes, as if everyone has a size 6 skeleton and we all just have different amounts of fat.

Newsflash: people have different size skeletons! You can be a very slim (i.e. minimal body fat) size 14, or an overweight size 10 (if your skeleton is actually very small.

underneaththeash · 09/01/2019 20:01

I'm a size 10 and I quite like how I look, I look gaunt (and wrinkly) if I'm much thinner.

XingMing · 09/01/2019 20:05

As I have aged (nearly 63) and had child (just one), I am heavier than I used to be, and post meno, I notice that it is harder to sustain decent muscle tone.

I'm 12lb heavier than I was at 25, and on a (very) good day I can fit into the few clothes I still have from then. Do I look the same? Obviously not. Do I look passable? Pretty much. I would like to be a little lighter than I am, but the weight now goes from places I'd prefer it to stay. My bum disappears entirely but the bosom doesn't. So I stick with my programme and walk dog daily, about 7-9,000 steps, and do my Pilates twice weekly, plus the rest of life. If it's of interest, my body shape and size are very similar to my grandmother and great aunt at the same age.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 09/01/2019 20:05

I am 31 and gone up to a size 14 to 16 from a size 10 after having four kids ( 3 in the last 5 years). I am on a diet and aiming to be about a 12. I've never been less than a size 10 since I was a teenager and since the birth of my eldest 10 years ago, I've never been less than a size 12 ,so I'll be very happy with that.
Size 10 is slim and a healthy size.

user1457017537 · 09/01/2019 20:06

My DS’s 28 year old girlfriend has the best figure I’ve ever seen. She’s 9 and a half stone and size 8/10. She is absolutely stunning and people stop and stare at her. She’s 5 ft 9 and is not a size 6.

JacintaJones · 09/01/2019 20:10

How old does your friend look OP?

I'm 5'9 and a size 10/12 at just turned 36.
I wouldn't wish to be any thinner as I feel it would age me significantly.

As it is I am often mistaken for late twenties and that wouldn't happen if I lost a stone and my face lost its padding.

Mrshoneyneedsanewhat · 09/01/2019 20:10

I don’t want to be in that over-35s club! I’m 38 and a 6-8. Always have been aside from during pregnancy. I eat well and exercise.

Cherries101 · 09/01/2019 20:12

Nope I’m Indian. Most of the women who are over 35 that I know are a healthy size 0-6’s who also look 10 years younger. I’m the biggest one at size 12. The concept of middle aged spread varies according to culture and health.

Gigglebrain · 09/01/2019 20:25

I’m 44 and a size 10, if I was any slimmer I would look unhealthy.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 09/01/2019 20:28

Am 5'9 and 50+ and 10/12.

Put on some menopausal weight around my middle a couple of years ago very appley shape and have worked hard to shift it.

it does get harder but can be done Gin

Rudgie47 · 09/01/2019 20:31

Your friends new years resolution should be to be less judgemental and to get a life.

EggOfScotland · 09/01/2019 20:34

That's an interesting point. I do notice that many Chinese/Japanese women seem to stay very slim in middle aged.

I must say though that I do see a lot of decidedly round Indian women here in Birmingham, although it's definitely not restricted to any particular ethnicity.

StellaRockafella · 09/01/2019 20:40

At 41 I was a size 6 which I have been for most of my adult life. These past few years have seen a 25 lbs weight gain partly due to thyroid issues and an early menopause, and no amount of diet and exercise has seemed to shift it. I wish I'd have made more of an effort when the first stone went on to try to lose it, as the second one went on scarily quickly.

My older size who is 47 is still a teeny tiny size 4, and doesn't seem to have been affected by any weight gain.

I do think that hormonal issues that some women are faced with in their 40s does make weight gain inevitable and weight loss so much harder.

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 09/01/2019 20:40

I'm 49, had two children and am post menopausal. I'm 5ft 3, and 7 and a half stone, which is around size 6-8. I think it's just my metabolism and I'm outdoors a lot with the horse. I do a bit of running too,and cycle to the stables. I'm deceptively sturdy and strong though. I do eat quite a lot. My dad was a similar build, and my sons are light too.

Cheerymom · 09/01/2019 20:45

I have no idea of my weight. And haven't in 20 years. I do know I used to be thinner ( clothes fitting) and I do know when I was thinner I was hungry and attracted lots of wanker men. I am now bigger and richer and having more orgasms and happier.

AnnAbbieLian · 09/01/2019 20:46

Since reaching adult sizes I’ve never been a size 10.

MrsJBaptiste · 09/01/2019 20:58

I'm 42 and slimmer than I have been in a long time - I'm 5' 9" and a size 10 (68kg)

However I eat very few carbs and am in the gym for 4 x 1.5 hour sessions a week. It really is much harder to maintain your weight past 40 (well past 35 really) and I know I need to eat much less these days.

Yura · 09/01/2019 21:12

Most women in the uk are a lot bigger than a size 10 - uk obesity statistics are pretty awfull
however, clothes size is one thing, healthy weight another. you should aim for a healthy weight, whateved your clothes size is for that (i’m really, really short so its a size 8 for me. a friend is very tall, wearing size 12 at a healthy weight)

Aeroflotgirl · 09/01/2019 21:13

She is rude, I would get a new friend for the new year.

Aeroflotgirl · 09/01/2019 21:15

I am 41 and a size 12/14, I must be the fattest bloater on here at 65kg.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/01/2019 21:20

Yes a 10 is perfectly fine, you can wear nearly anything well at a size 10.
