Aibu to be annoyed at Tesco forcing me to have bagless deliveries

Just that really, they are doing a trial and won't deliver anything in a bag. Not even a paper one. Don't really won't the delivery driver walking through the house so will have to take my delivery via the back door ConfusedBlush.

I wonder if supermarkets would deliver in cardboard boxes if asked - after all they have masses (that they send for recycling) and would work just as well for the customer... Whatever is used needs to fit into the totes; the totes that are delivered is what items are directly picked into. For wine I find empty wine boxes to avoid breakages but to save all boxes would take up an enormous amount of space in a very full warehouse and the shoppers wouldn't have the time at all to go and find boxes, the speed you are expected to work is fast. The wine boxes are left out for us by the nightshift who have replenished the wine in the alcohol aisles until the shop opens for customers, or we have some saved in our online room.

I do like the idea of a recyclable packing option though for those customers who currently insist on food already wrapped in plastic in the main being wrapped in yet more plastic.

For those who don't want people traipsing dirt in - many supermarkets supply their drivers with disposable overshoes that you can ask them to wear. More plastic though but far less than the amount of plastic contained in a bagged shop.

I realise women can drive vans but I've never had a female delivery driver from any of the supermarkets I've used. But obviously with a woman driver there would be even less embarrassment about san pro.

Of course I can understand why some people would not want a strange man in their house but to be fair these drivers are easily traceable (as well as being monitored in terms of timing). Realistically what are they likely to do? The risks must be negligible. All the Tesco drivers I meet are really friendly and helpful.

bumblingbovine49 · 08/01/2019 17:06

My kitchen is downstairs in the cellar but I just get my delivery to the front door....stack it up

If you are in flats, this means leaving your shopping piled up in the hall while you run up and down. Possibly OK but for some people maybe not depending on neighbours and space available etc.

Bombardier25966 · 08/01/2019 17:07

Surely it's not beyond the relams of imagination to understand why someone might not, whilst alone in their home, want to let strange men in?

It's not some random off the street is it. They're CRB checked and have a matter of minutes to deliver and be on their way. Plus, the vast majority of men are not sex offenders.

What do you do when you need a tradesman?

Bunnyfuller · 08/01/2019 17:07

Suck it up for goodness sake. First world problems

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 08/01/2019 17:09

I just grab the crate throw it on the kitchen floor ( eggs out first) and repeat. Takes no time and you can see what they’ve got wrong. There’s bags round the meat but love not having a bag draw anymore.
Most of the crates have very little in them no harder to carry than bags.
Surely people buy Sanpro in shops in front of people. Why is a delivery driver any different?

Poloshot · 08/01/2019 17:09

Order from elsewhere then.

Isleepinahedgefund · 08/01/2019 17:10

This is a very good example of the facts that a) most people have to be forced to make changes that impact the environment and b) that big business has a pivotal role in forcing those changes. I’m not a fan of Tesco at all but this is a feather in their cap as far as I’m concerned, and I hope the other supermarkets follow suit

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/01/2019 17:10

Daysofcurly Sainsbury's used to do those too, they were fab!

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 08/01/2019 17:10

Drawer. Sorry.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 08/01/2019 17:11

bumbling but the op clearly doesn’t live in a flat. I was responding directly to that.

WindyWednesday · 08/01/2019 17:12

Are all supermarket delivery drivers CRB checked?

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 08/01/2019 17:13

but my DH wouldn’t ever go near sanpro or speak of it are you married to a teenage boy?

It’s common knowledge that women have periods you know? It’s not a dirty little secret

Andjustlikethat · 08/01/2019 17:14

I opt to have no bags buthave a bundle of bags for life that I use to move the shopping from doorto kitchen. It's not the greatest hardship in the world Confused

WindyWednesday · 08/01/2019 17:14

Blaa

That’s uncalled for.

Angelicwings · 08/01/2019 17:16

The last delivery I had was approximately 2010 but even then I don't remember anything being plastic bagged?! It was all loose in the crates. As the driver brought a crate in, I would quickly unpack it onto the kitchen table and then hand it to him empty, ready for the next crate to unpack.

Nobody really needs bags for those deliveries unless other circumstances (mobility/block of flats or whatever) meaning that they can't quickly or easily unpack from the crates.

gamerchick · 08/01/2019 17:17

but my DH wouldn’t ever go near sanpro or speak of it

Seriously? What a pansy. Grin even my teenage son goes to the shop for me if I'm caught short. Periods are a fact of life.

DoneLikeAKipper · 08/01/2019 17:17

That’s uncalled for.

Perhaps, but you and your husband sound like you have a very unhealthy view on sanitary products. You can’t be surprised people are commenting on it.

winsinbin · 08/01/2019 17:18

I had a years free trial, with Ocado but was so horrified at the number of plastic bags they used (inside crates) that I only used them once. I went back to Tesco who deliver in crates without bags. The drivers carry them to the kitchen and help me unpack. TBH we are usually too busy chatting for them to take much notice of what’s in them.

Meadowland · 08/01/2019 17:18

Bombardier, I was thinking the same. If you don't want a "strange"man in your house, how on earth do you cope when you have to have a plumber or electrician ??
Talk about First World Problems...

arranbubonicplague · 08/01/2019 17:20

Are all supermarket delivery drivers CRB checked?

It's mostly DBS now. It's not essential for most jobs like this but it does seem to be something that employers ask for (see the 2nd comment below in the story that discusses this):

Oblomov18 · 08/01/2019 17:21

Here, all deliveries, Tesco, sainsbury, Iceland, arrive in big crates, driver gives them to me on the doorstep, and I decant the stuff, in the kitchen and give crate back to him. Repeat.

Works a treat.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 08/01/2019 17:21

windy well your DH does seem to have a very childish attitude to sanpro. Pretty ridiculous really.

Ginseng1 · 08/01/2019 17:21

Yabu - talk about first world problems!

Caxx · 08/01/2019 17:21

Just keep the green trays and give them bk next delivery
