Aibu to be annoyed at Tesco forcing me to have bagless deliveries

Just that really, they are doing a trial and won't deliver anything in a bag. Not even a paper one. Don't really won't the delivery driver walking through the house so will have to take my delivery via the back door ConfusedBlush.

We used to get our milk delivered in glass bottles which we washed and put back outside every day. No waste.

If you are a regular customer, couldn't the delivery man leave groceries in a crate which you put back outside every time. If there's no empty crate on your doorstep then you get no groceries.

CatnissEverdene · 08/01/2019 16:35

Change your supermarket OP.

We use Ocado and they deliver in bags but give you 5p back when you return each one. They take bags from anywhere too, not just their own. We have it bagged so we can take delivery from the front door, then carry through the house into the kitchen. We've got 2 dogs and they either bark or sniff the delivery driver like loons so it's best avoided. So we buy the bags one week and return them the following week.... it's like a carrier bag loan scheme.

WindyWednesday · 08/01/2019 16:35

I don’t need to get a grip thank you. I don’t like unpacking sanitary items in front of the driver. I’m embarrassed by it. It’s wonderful that you all don’t feel embarrassed, but I do.

moggle · 08/01/2019 16:36

I would love to get milk delivered in glass bottles but it is twice the price and we get through 12 pts a week. We just can’t afford it.

moggle · 08/01/2019 16:37

I’m hoping they’ll do a crate loan scheme. I have bought the folding crates suggested but they are all so flimsy they would never take a full load of things like milk, cans, juice etc.

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/01/2019 16:38

That's a foolish suggestion to make on here Gone.

Don't you know that not everyone has space to store crates, is able to lift them or lives somewhere where they are allowed to put things on their doorstep, or lives somewhere where things that are left on the doorstep will not be stolen? Wink

WindyWednesday · 08/01/2019 16:38

I’m not sure how embarrassment relates to non recycling of plastic bags. What a strange assumption to make.

Paper would be fine. I sell all my plastic bags back to ocado for 5p each.

whatsthepointthen · 08/01/2019 16:39

Im with you op, I would hate this as I dont let them in the house and take the bags at the door, I purposely chose to get it with bags for this purpose. I wouldnt want to carry each crate to the kitchen as it will probably be too heavy for me.’

Lovemusic33 · 08/01/2019 16:39

Why would you feel embarrassed unpacking sanitary items? I’m sure the delivery driver doesn’t give a shit if it’s your time of the month, he’s just delivering your shopping. How do you cope buying these things in shops? Do you only buy them if a female is on the till?

There’s no need for plastic bags, they should be got rid of altogether, that includes the ones we put veg in too. I’m happy to unload individual items from the basket/crate into my reusable fabric bags, it’s no hassle to me and I don’t care if the delivery man sees my items 😐

delboysskinandblister · 08/01/2019 16:40

OP - if we can shove our shopping straight into the trolley from Aldi and wheel it to the boot and straight into the reusable bags and then drive it 10 miles home then you can do this from your doorstep.

BrendasUmbrella · 08/01/2019 16:40

Ocado charge for plastic bags, but then refund you when you return them next shop which is an incentive to have them ready to hand over. They can use the same bags for many shoppers. I think that's fine.

I order bags for the driver's convenience as well as mine. I have a bad back and it would take ages for me to bend and take all the items out of crates. Bags make things a little bit easier for me and quicker for the driver.

JinglingHellsBells · 08/01/2019 16:41

Is this a postcode change? I've placed an order today and the bag option is there still.

I disapprove of bagless because the crates need to be clean. I don't think it's a good idea to put food in the fridge after there have been possible spillages in the crates - raw meat etc.

They could always do what Ocado does- refund you 5p for every bag returned with the next delivery, even if it's not an Ocado bag.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 08/01/2019 16:41

I need mine bagged.
My kitchen is small. It has 8 cupboards in total on one wall/floor. It is so narrow you can't have cupboards on both sides. Therefore the available counter space isn't big enough to put my shopping on.
My hall is narrower than the kitchen and you cant fit the crates and a person through (can't fit sideways either). Can't get to the back door as it is blocked off by a tumble dryer as the kitchen is so small. Nor can you fit anything bigger than a wheelie bin down the side of the house unless you carry it above your head (6ft wall).
I order £150 worth of groceries each week, which includes 16 2L bottles. There are typically 110 items in my shopping.
I have 2 young children, one with additional needs (adhd - very impulsive). I also have health needs myself that all in all make having my shopping not in bags completely unsuitable for me.
Asda used to try and send my order without my (paid for) bags. I've turned orders away at the door because quite simply, I can't manage it.
Have some thought for people not in your circumstances.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/01/2019 16:41

WindyWednesday perhaps something like Amazon is better, they'll come in a discreet cardboard box so the driver won't be able to see them. You could bulk order too then!

DoneLikeAKipper · 08/01/2019 16:41

It’s wonderful that you all don’t feel embarrassed, but I do.

Why thought? Seriously, it's quite odd. Do you get embarrased by other bits of your shopping? Do you not order toilet paper in case they realise you occasionally take a shit?

KrystalTipps · 08/01/2019 16:42

I wonder if supermarkets would deliver in cardboard boxes if asked - after all they have masses (that they send for recycling) and would work just as well for the customer...

JinglingHellsBells · 08/01/2019 16:42

They can use the same bags for many shoppers. I think that's fine.

I don't think that is how it works Hmm
It's very unhygienic if raw food has spilled, or bleach, and the bag is then reused.

I think the idea is that the bags are recycled along with plastics and made into something else.

EmeraldShamrock · 08/01/2019 16:42

They will supply Brown paper bags for fresh vegetables.
I don't think I have ever got a Tesco delivery in bags, the driver is usually to busy going for the rest of the crates, they never watch you unpack.
It's 0.79 cent for a plastic bag here. You really get used to lack of bags.

BettyBitchface · 08/01/2019 16:43

There seems to be a number of PPs who are happy to put their food on the floor before sticking it in their cupboards and fridges.

Right by the front door, the dirtiest bit of floor in the house, some of them.

That is fucking disgusting.

As for OP, keep some big bags by the door to decant into or buy a modular storage shelf if there's room for one and keep it empty for deliveries.

FestiveGanesh · 08/01/2019 16:43

Barbara joining you in a snigger.
OP, surely you can have some boxes or crates or something at hand to have the items decanted into? They'll come in a crate - the driver isn't going to unload each item individually from the van.

Til89 · 08/01/2019 16:44

I keep a couple bags for life at the front door and put my shopping in there as the driver passes it over.

LittleLongDog · 08/01/2019 16:45

What are the reasons for not wanting the delivery man to walk through your house?

To me it’s a perk of having shopping delivered. I love that it’s literally right to my kitchen counter so I don’t even have to bend down!

whatsthepointthen · 08/01/2019 16:45

I honestsly think they are going to get rid of bags soon. I went to two shops on the same day who both didnt have ANY bags. I was going to post it on here but then knew I would get “yabu, I will be glad of the day when plastic bags are gone forever” Hmm

EmeraldShamrock · 08/01/2019 16:46

You can request a brown bags for santry products. As above you get Brown bags for fresh vegetables so could be either.

busybarbara · 08/01/2019 16:46

We just take the stuff out of the crates and the front door, put it down in the hall, then carry it through bit by bit and put it away once they've gone. It doesn't have to land immediately in your kitchen.
