Aibu to be annoyed at Tesco forcing me to have bagless deliveries

Just that really, they are doing a trial and won't deliver anything in a bag. Not even a paper one. Don't really won't the delivery driver walking through the house so will have to take my delivery via the back door ConfusedBlush.

I REALLY feel for you if you feel so threatened by a professional person being in the same room as you at home. I can only imagine that the world is a frightening place for somebody who feels that way. flowers

Oh fuck you, you hve no idea what I have been through or why I would be uncomfortable with it.

TheFairyCaravan · 08/01/2019 20:17

I haven't had my Tesco delivery with bags since the carrier bag charge was brought in. The delivery drivers know I'm disabled, I've got it written on the notes bit on my account so any new drivers are forewarned, they bring it to the backdoor, straight Into the kitchen and help me unpack. Never once has one been pissy about the time it takes.

We all need to take a look at how much plastic is being used so I'm glad Tesco are doing this trial.

ChakiraChakra · 08/01/2019 20:32

@whatsthepointthen it was meant genuinely but ok. Fucking off as instructed. All the best.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 08/01/2019 20:41

NI here. Every delivery I've ever had the driver has come straight into the kitchen and helped me decant onto worktop/floor/table. It must be an Irish thing. Everyone chats and chips in. The house we are in atm has room around the back for parking too, so they normally do that.

There wasn't much chat the morning I went down to the kitchen in my dressing gown to give dh and the delivery man a hand when i saw the poor sod's face. He had been a blast from my past. The first blast in fact. Blush

DH knew something was up immediately and made a comment that he couldn't have got out of the house fast enough. Grin I don't get as many online deliveries since then.

Cuddlykitten123 · 08/01/2019 20:46

I just keep 2 empty washing baskets by the door and stack it all, then drag it into the kitchen.

fem2019 · 08/01/2019 20:50

Whatisthepointthen Completely get where you are coming from. And for the comments about tradespeople, I choose them based on personal recommendation from friends. I can't speak to CRB checks for delivery drivers, but I knew a lot of tradesmen in a exes social circle and none of them had CRBs, lots of them had criminal records and several of them I wouldn't allow within 20ft of my house.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 08/01/2019 20:59

Our local authority insists that our rubbish is placed in a black bin bag. They will not collect rubbish that is not bagged. Therefore, we reuse our plastic carrier bags by using them for the indoors rubbish bin and then, once full, tying them up and putting in the required black bin bag. Recycling, such as it is here, also has to go in a plastic sack (different colour). Recycling sacks are only for paper, card and certain plastics. Any other recycling has to be taken directly to the dump, but there is a limit on the number of visits you are allowed to make - you have to produce your council tax bill to prove you live in the borough. This basically means that a lot of recyclable stuff ends up in the general rubbish. If Tesco stop supplying plastic bags, I would just have to buy plastic bin liners and they would only be used once.
I would actually prefer the deposit on a crate option mentioned earlier, but the size of my kitchen and the available working top space, really make it impractical for delivery drivers to bring crates into the kitchen, hence the preference for a 'personal'set of crates to be returned when taking in the subsequent delivery.

helacells · 08/01/2019 21:29

This sounds like a bonkers system what's wrong with paper bags? They are recycled. And what if you're doing a massive shop, the delivery guy will be there for ages! This must eat into their profits as time is money. Very inconvenient for the customer and needlessly so.

BertieDrapper · 08/01/2019 21:44

@Andjustlikethat it's called a festival trolley..... saw someone using one in Asda the other day, she said as she didn't drive it was perfect..... it's bascailly a millennial version of a granny shopper!! 🤣

trinitybleu · 08/01/2019 22:11

Have 2 or 3 washing baskets by the door. Empty crate into basket. Then unpack from those. Easy :)

You get quite quick at doing two handed emptying of the crate. I get annoyed if the guy tries to pass me things now as I am on a roll and thinking "tins, tins, frozen, potatoes, leave the bread and eggs for on top" :D

seething1234 · 08/01/2019 22:16

Yeah I'm in Ireland and everything comes in a crate without bags. Driver walks through my house and puts the crates on the worktop, they even take out any heavy items (water, potatoes etc.). I'm actually reading the post thinking "what the actual fcuk".

arranbubonicplague · 08/01/2019 22:23

festival trolley

I have one of these Blush (arthritis and various MSK nuisances) and I use it for moving a fair amount from one room to another and have picked up the art of a turn in very narrow spaces. Grin

Some of the people on this thread are going to really struggle when we are all being forced to make serious changes to save the planet.

No carrier bags is frankly nothing by comparison.

Some of the people on this thread are going to really struggle when we are all being forced to make serious changes to save the planet.

The scale of the changes, and the necessity that they'll involve trading, financial, social, civil, legislative, environmental, transport, and every major system means that we'll probably all need to accept serious changes and disruption.

BalthazarImpresario · 08/01/2019 23:03

I do bagless deliveries and keep those blue ikea bags by the door shove it all in one and do my strong woman routine taking it to the kitchen. Only a few extra minutes.

TotorosNeighbour · 08/01/2019 23:07

This is all for show, Tesco is avoiding to actually do something that could help change...like stopping to bag every single fruit or vegetable in non-reusable non-recyclable plastic FFS!!

EmeraldShamrock · 09/01/2019 16:45

vegetable in non-reusable non-recyclable plastic FFS!!
That is a suppliers issue. I was surprised they still use bags for delivery in the UK.
It is delivered years bag less in Ireland

I have to admit all this lark with plastic bags has really been positive in Ireland, especially in large estates, plus railings are no longer littered with bags, lots of the usual take away mess etc but minimum bags.

CheekyFuckerHQ · 09/01/2019 17:32

We have enormous unruly dogs so I don’t even let the driver past the front gate! I use a wheelbarrow lined with a clean towel. Take it to back door and unload straight into kitchen. No plastic waste.
When I say wheelbarrow, we refer to her as Margaret but that’s probably a whole other thread 😎

FastLane46 · 09/01/2019 17:42

I used to work for Tesco years ago and they trialled this, lots of complaints made them change their mind.
If enough people complain they'll change it back to how it's always been

RLABC · 09/01/2019 17:50

I'm with you OP... "so will have to take my delivery via the back door". Nope, I'd not like that either Grin Wink

6timesthemess · 09/01/2019 18:00

I empty all the crates out into the hall in s huge pile of food (8 people in our house so it’s a big pile) then we carry it through and put it away when the driver has gone. It’s more leisurely that way Smile

delboysskinandblister · 09/01/2019 18:03

i don't know what a festival trolley is or what it looks like but whatever it is, it's mine now! Will i need a £1 coin for this?

MaisyPops · 09/01/2019 18:04

Driver brings crate with bag less shopping to your door. Hands it to you. You take to kitchen, unload shopping. Return and repeat. Isn’t that how it works?
I love an AIBU success early on.

That's how we've always done it.

perfectstorm · 09/01/2019 18:05

Agree with previous posters - just take cloth or jute bags to the door and get the shopping transferred into them. TBH this is making me consider moving to Tesco from Ocado. The endless plastic bags make me really uncomfortable, and the jolly, "Oh, we recycle them!" pisses me off too as it's such obvious greenwashing. I wish they'd at least move to paper bags. If Tesco will transfer to my own, or carry through to kitchen, then that's great.
