I love the description "potato tops" so apt!

They are awful. Even pricey ones look cheap

LuckyLou7 · 08/01/2019 13:13

I like cold shoulder tops and dresses, it's a nice way of showing a bit of skin without totally bare arms. Not everyone's shoulders look like potatoes.

rabbitfoodadvocate · 08/01/2019 13:25

Oh god. Cold shoulder tops need to die!!!

Ghanagirl · 08/01/2019 13:27

@BunsOfAnarchy
I’m sure you don’t but it made laugh🤣🤣🤣

BusterGonad · 08/01/2019 13:33

I tried on a lovely cold shoulder top the other day, a surf style one, unfortunately it was too loose below my boobs so made me look horrible but it was such a beautiful fabric! I wish I tried on the smaller size now. I'll try almost any fashion ad for me it's something fun, I've never really wanted a capsule wardrobe of classics. I'd die of boredom. Same with make up.

BunsOfAnarchy · 08/01/2019 13:56

Ahhh so thats what you mean.

I like them. The holes detract from my potato body. When you look at me you dont see 1 huge potato. You see two maris piper sized ones instead. They are clearly genius Grin

WetWednesdays · 08/01/2019 14:01

I hate cold shoulder jumpers - you take a perfectly good, warm jumper and ruin it by taking out the shoulders! Also why cropped trousers!? The just make your ankles cold Angry

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 08/01/2019 14:15

Whereas potato tops and cropped trousers? We'll all look at them in years to come and wonder what we were thinking of
It's called fashion. We always look back at previous fashions and wonder what we were thinking.
Some people wear 'classics' all the time but even those classes date over the years unless you wear bland, boring clothes.
Who here still wears Victorian ball gowns and carries a fan?

LibertyHill · 08/01/2019 14:47

dogzdinner And what's the deal with partly tucking your top in?

Please tell me that people are not doing this, surely this is just for photos so that you can see what the top of the trousers look like?

dorsetdollymixture · 08/01/2019 14:53

I love cropped trousers but they don't like me and my sizeable arse, unfortunately.
Those bloody tops, though, I hate with a passion. They always, without fail, look terrible (to me). Every now and then a fashion trend will come along which I'll detest and they are it right now. It's hard to explain why I detest them as much as I do, but I do. Urgh!!!

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 08/01/2019 15:15

I agree with you OP.

Tops with holes in the shoulders look messy and scruffy. Cropped trousers with wider bottoms look really ugly, however I do like above the ankle tapered jeans and chinos, or trousers, but I always think wide legged trousers of any length look like clown trousers, and the recent fashion for wide striped ones even more so.

Wide legged crops don't seem to go with any kind of footwear and are clumsy and unfinished. Worn with a cold shoulder top just says 'fashion victim' or 'I have no mirror'.

learieonthewildmoor · 08/01/2019 15:28

I love cropped trousers for spring and summer- don’t have to take up the hems by several feet.
Cold shoulder tops confuse me. Like no - sleeves turtle necks, and woollen t-shirts. Neither fish nor fowl nor good summer clothing.

Boofybear1 · 08/01/2019 19:51

They are called "cold shoulder tops" and each to their own.
Wouldnt life be boring if we all dressed the same!!!!!

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2019 20:17

Jacket potato!

I hate potato tops and cropped trousers!
TheVanguardSix · 09/01/2019 08:51

I like to stick with my mum's advice from years back (when I was 18 and developing an eye for fashion- an eye I have never quite developed/mastered):

What doesn't look good on the model (in the catalogue/online), won't look good on us regular people.

And it's true.
Ironically, I became a model and to this day, I am not a fashionista in the least (not a model either anymore). But I know to give potato tops and cropped trousers the total swerve. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2019 11:16

That's very true TheVanguard, if it looks awful on the model then there's no hope.

BaitandSwitch · 09/01/2019 11:20

So it's not just me that doesn't like potato tops or sawn-offs? And it's getting worse! More like a potato blight is now upon us.

As I said earlier, I think cold shoulder summer dresses are okay, they hide a multitude of bingowings sins, and as pp have said, it's on trend at the moment. A cold shoulder dress can be flattering, highlighting tanned shoulders, and not drawing attention to less than perfect upper arms.

I don't understand cold shoulder jackets and jumpers though, surely you wear those items for warmth?

BusterGonad · 09/01/2019 13:17

I think the photos on here are particularly fowl, there are plenty of cold shoulder tops that actually look lovely!

RosemarysBabyDress · 09/01/2019 16:34

It's not a recent photo of course, but if it is good enough for Kate Grin

I hate potato tops and cropped trousers!
RaspberryRipple1963 · 09/01/2019 16:46

I can't wear those tops as I HATE the tops of my arms (goose flesh) but I think they look OK on some women. As for cropped trousers, for a start, you need to be of average height or taller (5 foot 4 plus) otherwise they're not cropped, they reach your ankles. Personally,I don't like them probably because I'm too fat to wear them. What I have noticed though,is that they always seem to be white. I never see black ones,or any other colour, for some reason.

NewerMoreBoringNameFor2019 · 09/01/2019 16:50

I’m oddly proportioned so cropped trousers actually look good on me and balance me out.

I hate cold shoulder tops though. I’ve never seen one that didn’t look tacky.

FaFoutis · 09/01/2019 16:57

I wear cropped trousers with a big belt and knee high boots so I look like a pirate (in my head). I'm tall though.

The potato top might be handy for showing off tattoos.

Dinosforall · 09/01/2019 17:14

I like cropped trousers (wide)

Around here cold shoulder tops are mostly now the preserve of older ladies who want to flash some - but not too much - flesh. I don't think they do anything for anyone's shape (or size).

AnotherPidgey · 09/01/2019 17:14

I have short, muscular legs so can carry off cropped fitness leggings, but look ridiculous in cropped trousers, like I've just grown out of them, and they tend to cut at one of the widest parts of my legs.

I liked the photo the top with the longer slit as it's a longer, more flattering line, but the hole missing from the shoulder looks daft on most people.

I never understood woolly short-sleeved tops, it's never the right temperature for them!
