These - ghastly items of clothing look terrible on just about everyone.

I'm wearing black wide-legged cropped cords today, with a pale grey cashmere crew-neck jumper, and black Stan Smiths. I have crocheted tights on underneath the trousers, so no chilly ankles. According to one of my colleagues, I look "French chic", whatever that might be.

I work in a creative environment, and this is a staple outfit for me - sub in a t-shirt or Breton top in summer, lose the tights, thinner trousers.

You can keep the potato top, though.

sodabreadjam · 08/01/2019 12:14

I Googled “potato top” and all I got was recipes for pies. Nice diversion for five minutes or so.

BaitandSwitch · 08/01/2019 12:20

Even the model looks defeated in that one, dogs dinner

This made Smileme laugh! Thank you

I don’t like the top but I love those style of trousers. I go for them over jeans and leggings.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/01/2019 12:23

I only opened the thread to see what a potato top was

Same here - I know them as "cold-shoulder tops, and I think they are beyond horrible.

peachgreen · 08/01/2019 12:24

Cold shoulder tops somehow always manage to look cheap. I hate them. Horrible.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/01/2019 12:24

*Wide-legged crops are lovely - like culottes - narrow ones are . . . not so nice.

Meralia · 08/01/2019 12:27

I agree, cold shoulder tops do always look cheap, even if they were expensive.

pyjamama · 08/01/2019 12:33

My new favourite phrase now Smile

The main problem with those clothes is that they must be fucking freezing.
What season would you wear a potato top in?

The cropped trousers look daft on that model - looks like they have shrunk in the wash.
I suppose there must be women who look good in them but I haven't seen many people wearing cropped trousers and rocking them.

TheFairyCaravan · 08/01/2019 12:43

I don't like cold shoulder tops. I can't see the point of a cold shoulder jumper. You want your body to be covered when it's cold not have bits uncovered. It's a bit like wearing a chiffon scarf with a vest top in the Summer, I never understood that either.

whatwouldyoubelikeat28 · 08/01/2019 12:45

I live in the warm and I love the off-shoulder variations in fasjhion, I have nice shoulders though, they are def an asset of mine. Whatever, there is so much variation in fashion these days and most people dress like frumps anyway so carry on y'all

midsomermurderess · 08/01/2019 12:45

A colleague of mine once turned up in one of those cold-shoulder tops and when I was having a meeting with her I found it so distracting. Not really a good look anywhere, but for the office, just a bit odd.

paxillin · 08/01/2019 12:54

When it is hot enough for naked shoulders, it is too hot for long sleeves. See also peep toe boots.

KC225 · 08/01/2019 12:57

I am loving that the sleeve has become a 'thing'. Women of a certain age don't always don't have good arms (not you Michelle Obama). Mine look vats of cottage cheese squeezed into cheap flesh coloured tights, so a tiny bit of shoulder peek or slashed arm is good. The photo you attached OP is less of a teasing peek and more of an indecent exposure. Too much and ugly. If ever a potato famine came to be again - that top would first in the queue.

Cropped trousers are a mixed bag. Not as offensive as the top but you do have to be a certain height to pull it off properly. Princess Diana circa early/mid 90s could rock a pair of cropped trousers.

Myusername101z · 08/01/2019 12:58

Haha I hate those tops ! I do have identical trousers though and I think I rock them Grin

RussellSprout · 08/01/2019 12:59

I never got the cold shoulder trend and thought it would be a flash in the pan fashion, aren't they over yet?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/01/2019 12:59

I agree with you on the "potato" tops (although also had never heard them called that) - if you're going to have a sleeve, I'd rather it was joined at the top, thanks! - but not on the cropped trousers.

Mostly because I wear cropped trousers a reasonable percentage of the year, being in Australia. I'm largely too old and fat to wear shorts unless desperate (in the heat) so will wear cropped trousers in linen or lightweight cotton a lot in the hotter weather. Never in winter though - back to full length legs then. I prefer my cropped trousers to come just below the knee, rather than just above the ankle; but not be cargo shorts - can't stand cargo shorts.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/01/2019 13:02

If you don't like them, don't wear them OP. Not difficult, is it?

Or did you just want to come on to bitch and hope that you'd hit a 'target'? Such a knobbish thing to do, be out with your husband and comment on how other people look. Perhaps he is thinking the same, that you sound horribly judgemental. I bet he isn't looking her a woman's shoulders when you draw attention to them either.

I don't wear trousers ever, they don't look good (on me). I don't apply that to everybody else though.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/01/2019 13:02

Re. the potato tops - they're EVERYWHERE in Australia at the moment (underlining the "Aussie fashions are always behind" situation), in summer and winter tops. I was looking for a nice short sleeve top, thought I'd found one and then found unnecessary sleevage added below a gap! Just why???

umpteennamechanges · 08/01/2019 13:04

One of the most unfortunate things about being on the plump side is that if I wear cropped trousers I tend towards looking like the Hulk Blush
