To be unhappy to see dogs in the garden

I walk along a local sustrans route, there is a newbuild estate, lovey houses built on the site of an old farm, and a couple lovely springers.
I dont like seeing them loose in their garden:
they look like they want to go for a lovely walk,
they might be stolen
they look abandoned
They might take off of their own accord.

God people on here are horrible

trulybadlydeeply · 08/01/2019 11:33

You know what we need, don't you? A diagram.

OP - how do the dogs look? Are they underweight? Are their coats in poor condition? What is in the garden is it grass or paving, or are they wandering about in mud? You have every right to report to the RSPCA, but they will want to know your specific concerns, and what evidence there is of abuse or neglect.

These new builds are not like your new builds

That's right. They aren't just any new builds.

These are M&S New Builds

I agree with SaucyJack.

@Horace, are you OK? You do sound down and sad. You could start a new thread on a different board about what is getting you down and get better support. MN can be really, really helpful if you're having a rough time.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 08/01/2019 11:52

Maybe the dogs have just been for a lovely walk? Maybe they are just about to go? Maybe they really like being outdoors, and their owner has to do the washing up/hoovering/laundry so is unable at that moment to take them for another lovely walk?

And I can't imagine the thought process that goes from "Ooh look, a dog in a garden" to "That dog has probably been stolen"

This would make a great David Walliams children's story., insert title, as in Horace and the lonely Springers or whatever.

My dog has a spreadsheet where he scores his daily walks from 'lovely' to 'utterly rubbish'.
He is always rather cross with a half an hour evening walk around the block and has RSPCA on speed dial if his walks are less than lovely.

If I had lots of time I would read the complete thread but I haven't which is such a shame as it's clearly one of those batshit ones Grin

OoohAyyye · 08/01/2019 12:02

You've been very vague OP so it's hard to guess why you have made certain assumptions.

Your recent updates suggest you are down and MN is full of lovely people, honest, so why don't you come back and tell us more about what's going on with you?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 08/01/2019 12:02

Oh, hang on a minute, do you mean someone might steal the dogs from the garden? I thought by "they might be stolen" you meant the people who live in the house attached to the garden might have stolen the dogs. Still an odd thing to think imo, but slightly less odd than my interpretation.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 08/01/2019 12:03

I rather assumed Horace meant that someone might steal them from the garden, not that they had already been stolen.

@HoraceCope I'm sure these dogs are probably fine, assuming there aren't other concerns that you haven't mentioned. There is a small risk that someone may steal them, but it's fairly low, despite what Facebook may suggest.

That said, there have been bits of this thread that have made me snort out loud which will teach me not to have a sneaky peruse of MN whilst at work.

Topseyt · 08/01/2019 13:26

I do share some of your concerns about dogs left in gardens, mainly because of the possibility that they could get stolen, and dog theft is a fairly fast rising crime in the UK. Certainly not unknown. However, the security or otherwise of the garden you mention is impossible to judge via a few posts on the internet. Your comments about it are also very vague.

Your other comments, such as them looking abandoned, or as if they want to go for a lovely walk are your own suppositions which you may be projecting onto these dogs without knowing the full facts. If you have concerns or doubts then report those to the local Dog Warden and/or the RSPCA.

You think that they could take off of their own accord? Again, hard to judge. From a secure and enclosed garden most dogs won't. A few may be escape artists who cannot be left outside unsupervised. A friend of mine had a lurcher some years ago to whom a secure 6ft fence was no deterrent at all.

I have a labrador and a cocker spaniel. When I am out they are in the house. When I am in they can be free to wander in and out of the garden at will, especially on nice days and might elect to spend a fair bit of time out there. Walks are shorter now that both are elderly and getting creaky (labrador is 14 and spaniel is 13), but that isn't a problem that anyone else should be concerning themselves with as they go past my house. It is my judgement to make.

Off out for a lovely walk soon, actually. Then I will have to leave them for a short while so that I can head out to the vet and pick up more supplies of their regular medication.

Feel free to wander past my garden, OP. A dog, two ducks, two rabbits, and two dozen hens all wandering freely. Don't steal any. I'll await RSPCA's call.

OP is currently scanning Amazon for a net big enough for curtains pets.

I worry when I see dogs left in gardens because they do get stolen, often. Today there was one on our lost and found group, gone missing from the garden, it happens a lot.

I always remember a few years ago someone hearing barking and rushing out to see their dog being hauled over the back fence and they couldn't get out in time to stop it.

I spend my free time on sites that try to locate missing pets, they are full of people asking others to share and share and make them too hot to handle, sometimes they are lucky and get them home, often they don't. Look at DogLost, so many go missing from gardens.
