To ask for sandwich fillings that go with avocado?

I have recently discovered that I like avocado Blush I know... proper millenial here!

Anyway. I'm a bit unsure what to have with it. I fancy having it in sandwiches or a salad for a packed lunch, so please hit me up with ideas for what (vegetarian, so no meat or fish) fillings go with it, or other delicious ideas for what to use it for!

Halloumi (grilled)

Just by itself with some oil, balsamic, and seasoning in the hole where the stone goes. Eat with a teaspoon Blush

louderthan · 08/01/2019 10:23

Olives and chilli flakes
Emmenthal or Jarlsberg slices

Soiree · 08/01/2019 12:17

Bacon. Cancel the cheque.

I'm definitely having a facon and avocado bagel once the baby I'm trapped under wakes up. I'm intrigued by a frazzles and avocado sandwich though!

Emmental and cress

BillywigSting · 08/01/2019 12:28

Blended and mixed with good quality melted dark chocolate for the most amazing chocolate pudding.

In a wrap with feta, spinach or rocket, red peppers, red onion, bit of olive oil and loads of lemon juice and salt pepper. Wrap filling also nice as a salad.

With a poached egg on a bagel (lemon juice salt and pepper)

Mashed onto posh toast with chilli flakes, lime juice and salt

Diced or sliced and eaten with chilli and jacket potato

Blended with cream and Italian herbs for a lovely rich pasta sauce, nice with spaghetti or linguine and lots of halved cherry tomatoes

Blondebakingmumma · 08/01/2019 12:29

Toast avocado and crack salt and pepper

I have never had one so no advice of how to enjoy them

Is it really wrong that this is possibly my most favourite post ever on MN? I’m looking forward to this MNetter commenting on other threads eg “AIBU to get The Rage at people parking in P&C spaces at Tesco when they don’t have a child with them?” Reply: I don’t have children, don’t drive and have never been to Tesco so I really can’t comment. Grin

Anyway: I’m making posh veggie BLTs tonight with lightly toasted crusty bread, veggie bacon, sliced avocado, lettuce and tomato. Lush. Avocado is also lovely with egg mayo. I also like it mashed with pepper and spread on crackers or those sandwich thin things with sliced tomato.

Happy avocado eating 🥑

It is possible to highlight the whole comment, mentioning they are the equivalent of blood diamonds in Mexico. I should have added that was the reason I never had one, and they look like mushy peas I do not like mushy peas either.
I am loving you think it is a great, I am glad you will look forward to my thread responses in the future. Wink
I hope there is a thread about mushy peas too.

BlackPrism · 08/01/2019 13:43

Feta and red onion
Falafel

smudgedlipstick · 08/01/2019 13:44

Mozzarella!

ilovesooty · 08/01/2019 14:02

It's a bit like the question and answers on Amazon reviews.
"Does this fit a standard micro USB plug?"
"Sorry don't know"

Emerald interestingly I read something the other day about peas being a more sustainable / ethical substitute for avocado. There were recipes for smashed peas on toast with poached eggs etc. I love love avocados but I am also concerned about the implications of the demand for them. I’m a huge mushy pea fan though so will happily join any thread about the Joy of Peas

Aquiver · 08/01/2019 14:11

Sorry if this has been posted previously (I haven't read the full thread) but Leon make a delicious avocado, grilled halloumi and (sweet) chilli breakfast sandwich in an English breakfast muffin.

Have recreated it many times at home and it is lovely!

Smotheroffive · 08/01/2019 14:45

I am grateful of the blood diamonds post, as I do t think I have the right to enjoy anything no matter what the extremely high cost to our plant and its communities, human or animal.

I am quite concerned about the really negative reactions some have posted in trying to stand on someone for posting that very true and important byte.

Avocados have been shamelessly promoted recently despite the horrific implications.

I want to be aware of the impact of such things, and make a choice to contribute to the end of such.

Justbackfromnewwine · 08/01/2019 14:46

Marmite

GahWhatever · 08/01/2019 14:48

Eaten in a hotel and surprisingly delicious: spinach, tomato, avocado, cream cheese and marmite.

Smotheroffive · 08/01/2019 14:55

Maybe the UK should stop the import of avocados, bearing in mind the harm behind the industry.

Smotheroffive · 08/01/2019 14:57

...cartels, kidnapping and murder...

Booksandpens · 08/01/2019 15:00

Haven't RTFT
I like olives with avocoado, and the balsamic glaze, but didn't find any last time I went to the shop. Normal balsamic vinegar doesn't quite hit the spot in a sandwich imo.

EmeraldShamrock · 08/01/2019 15:02

Smotheroffive lots of restaurants have. Thanks for your comment, I feel better about my comment getting pulled apart for fun. I know there are lots of products not good for the environment but these are really sold for a healthier lifestyle, at a high cost to the environment and man?

Christmasfairy07 · 08/01/2019 15:05

Folks you really need to read the OP! Chicken & bacon are not veggie! Avocado with vine ripened tomatoes & black pepper. As a non veggie, I would add bacon to that 🙂

Smotheroffive · 08/01/2019 15:05

I got the impression, rightly or wrongly, that communities were standing up to the cartels and murderers...

...is there hope its improving, do you think?

So we can really enjoy the avocado rather than actively supporting murder, and the cartels.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 08/01/2019 15:12

Eggs.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 08/01/2019 15:14

Mashed avocado, sliced hard boiled eggs on sandwich. Salt & pepper. Yum.

ChakiraChakra · 08/01/2019 15:45

Thank you everybody. I feel like I have enough avocado ideas to last me a lifetime, and should I start eating meat again my very first sandwich back will of course be Avo, chicken and bacon 😂

Thanks too to the posters pointing out the ethical problems surrounding avocados. Whilst I'm not going to stop eating them, it has made me stop and decide that I will only eat them occasionally. The problem with the ethics of food is it's a minefield, and we have slave labour picking fruit and veg right under our noses in the UK despite regulations and a culture that really shouldn't match up with modern slavery, so I'm slightly wary of choosing not to eat one food when actually what we eat or wear probably involves cruelty in the same or other ways. That's not to say I don't care greatly about any of these issues. If avocado imports are so popular and violent cartels a problem, to me that points to a huge opportunity for fair trade certified avocados. Fingers crossed that might become a reality soon.
