To hate red trousers on men?

This seems to be a status marker meaning I am very posh, so it doesn't matter if I look like a total nob.

Why is it OK to mock the rich but not the poor?

Privilege. Mocking rich, older, heterosexual white men wearing red trousers is inherently less problematic than mocking young, non-white men wearing grey joggers because the former are hardly a marginalised and oppressed group in society. It’s got nothing to do with “being jealous of their money”, it’s mocking them for being gammon.

You have no idea what sort of life these men may have had or whether they are heterosexual or privileged. FFS.

Whisky2014 · 05/01/2019 17:20

No one should be mocking anyone. Whether they think it's a status marker or not.

FithColumnist · 05/01/2019 17:21

No, but I can make an educated guess if I’m seeing them in a golf club knocking back whiskeys and calling each other Giles!

kaytee87 · 05/01/2019 17:21

And who said anything about anyone's skin colour?

Whisky2014 · 05/01/2019 17:22

Even if they were, so what?

CalamityJane10 · 05/01/2019 17:26

I see, only straight men are called Giles and play golf Hmm.

The problem is there is nothing educated about your pathetic prejudice.

StarJazmin · 05/01/2019 17:28

This is really unpleasant. If you wouldn’t say it ‘in real life’, whatever you mean by that, don’t post it online on a public forum, that’s just trolling. This isn’t a simulation, real people read and respond to your post. Grow up.

Camomila · 05/01/2019 17:29

I love cords. They remind me of my grandad and uncles (I think farming in cold weather rather than posh)
I’ve bought DS some tiny navy cords in the sales. We live in Sussex so he’ll fit in :)

kaytee87 · 05/01/2019 17:29

Don't forget it's only white men over 55 that wear coloured trousers Hmm
Except my husband is middle eastern/Asian and has trousers of several different colours and he's in his 30s.

What a nasty post.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/01/2019 17:32

It’s a ‘uniform’ of sorts, worn by men called St John. Much like the young men (Lee and Baz) awaiting the Magistrates Court next to our work on a Monday morning in their grey tracksuit bottoms.

WrapAndRoll · 05/01/2019 17:33

What do you wear ubacucat and what kind of "marker" is it?

I am extremely grand. None of the males in my close or extended family wear pink/red trews. But carry on with the class war prejudice... Or just have some salt and vinegar to go with your chips, OP.

dapplegrey · 05/01/2019 17:40

Is there something wrong with being posh?

The op definitely thinks there is Grin

RaspberryRipple1963 · 05/01/2019 17:47

Yes,I'm in total agreement about red trousers on men. Or women, come to think of it. But even more than red ones,I hate those horrible mustard coloured ones. I remember seeing a bloke, about two years ago in a coffee shop, dressed from head to toe in this colour. He thought he was the bee's knees. My DD said to me 'that he looked like a giant turd'. Grin

missyB1 · 05/01/2019 17:47

There’s nothing wrong with being posh - but it doesn’t mean you have to dress like a hooray Henry twit! The red trousers and tweed gang particularly prevalent on race days in our town make me cringe every time.

Yearofthemum · 05/01/2019 17:48

YANBU

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 05/01/2019 17:48

OP we get it. You don't like men in red trousers Smile

WrapAndRoll · 05/01/2019 17:53

Rich - or did you mean upper class? Not the same. Some upper class people aren't well off, some working class people end up with lots of money. And not all rich people are horrible or greedy, some are generous and kind.

Older - everyone gets older. It isn't something to sneer at. With age often comes experience and perspective.

Heterosexual - the first person I can think of who wore mustard cords was a lovely intelligent and interesting man who happened to be gay. Red trousers - first person who comes to mind is straight, and a nice open-minded person.

Gammon - a horrible, loaded term which is indiscriminately aimed at a perfectly valid section of the population. Many of us know people who happen to be white, male, older, well off, etc. or have different taste in clothing to ours, or some combination of these. They are people's friends, teachers, fathers, grandfathers, brothers, colleagues, neighbours, etc. Normal, nice people who go about their lives minding their own business. Of course some are obnoxious, but so are some people from any social group, class, skin colour, wealth level, sex or age.

If you disagree with someone's beliefs, political views or fashion sense, by all means debate properly and politely, but there is no need for name-calling or stereotyping as "other". It's just nasty and lazy.

MargueritaPink · 05/01/2019 18:04

I think this thread should be pulled. It is serving no purpose other than allowing some posters to vent their irrational prejudices.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 05/01/2019 18:04

Genuinely never seen a man in red trousers

JacquesHammer · 05/01/2019 18:05

How ironic in a thread about alleged class-markers how utterly lacking in class the OP is.

LakieLady · 05/01/2019 18:05

@FontofKnowledge Does your husband frequent the Lewes Arms or the Yew Tree at Chalvington, by any chance?

If so, I may have seen you out and about. Wink
