To think buying a £52 eyeshadow pallet for 9 year old is just madness?

I'm talking about the James Charles pallet. £52 for eyeshadow and blusher. My DD9 wants to spend her Christmas money on it but I have said a firm NO! A lot of her friends got it for Christmas (I know this is true as have seen their mothers show it off on Facebook). Each to their own and all that but £52! AIBU?

I think if you have greasy skin and never wash your tools then you're heading for trouble, I've got dry skin and clean tools, and I always wash my hands and use wet wipes for spills and to wipe down my make up. I think it's a case of COMMON SENSE (which isn't so common).

I don't get the 'it's her money' argument.

She's 9. If she wanted to spend 'her money' on an unsuitable book, or give it all away to one of her friends, or buy twenty packets of biscuits with it, then surely you'd expect her parents to step in.

So why is it different when she wants to buy expensive make up that she's far too young to need?

@KatyWhatsit it was explained to me like this: bacteria multiplies every 20 minutes, (more so in warmer environments) so say you put 1 germ on a brand new piece of make up (weather by hand or by brush/tool), in 20 min you have 2 bacteria then 4 then 8 and so on-in hours there are thousands. Then you open it up again and expose it to the air which has everyday bacteria/dust in it, plus any bad bacteria from coughing/sneezing or being ill/ or if you use it in a bathroom where there could be other nasties in the room, and re-apply to your face. Some bacteria transfers to you and some thats on you transfers to the make up. The germs still continue to multiply and "breed" whilst being added to everytime you use it. Eventually the mixture turns into something nastier than just a few germs from your face. The ingredients are not antibacterial so can't kill the bacteria.
You wash your face everyday so the bacteria on you skin doesn't have chance to build up. Washing hands and tools correctly and keeping lids on things and storing in a cool environment does help but its not fool proof.
Dates are there because of the ingredients they use have a shelf life, a bit like food. They know that in certain conditions the ingredients will last x amount of time before they become unstable or the "average" amount of bacteria they would expect to be in it after that amount of time would be reaching a unsafe limit. Yes some make up will be fine to use past the date if you have looked after it and kept it correctly but not every one does that.
Its a bit like buying a carton of milk and expecting it to last 10 days. In the fridge with the lid on fine, left open on the side all the time it would go off within two.

Some people get away with using the make up for years. I was unlucky (by all accounts of how many people on this thread use old make up and i do consider my self quite a hygenic person) i wouldn't take the chance any more, i damaged my eye quite badly using 2+ year old mascarsa and eyeliner and i have bad reactions when i try to wear eye make up now, my eyes water like hell and go puffy. Plus the pics the drs showed me of manky, pussy and bloody eyes were the stuff of nightmares and horror films!

If it's a pencil eye liner, sharpening it will get rid of bacteria.

CynthiaRothrock · 09/01/2019 08:30

If you really belive that then please carry on... eyeliner is soft and porous, ( unlike a normal lead pencill ) so bacteria doesn't just sit on The surface it burrows its way in. Sharpening it will remove bacteria from he surface, but that is all. Not what has burrowed in to it.

I'd let her do it since it's her money. Either she'll treasure it until it runs out or she'll regret it and learn a valuable lesson about money.

A lot of men are now in fact wearing makeup simply because they enjoy it
