To think buying a £52 eyeshadow pallet for 9 year old is just madness?

I'm talking about the James Charles pallet. £52 for eyeshadow and blusher. My DD9 wants to spend her Christmas money on it but I have said a firm NO! A lot of her friends got it for Christmas (I know this is true as have seen their mothers show it off on Facebook). Each to their own and all that but £52! AIBU?

The womb and penis part was a jokey reply to your generic question about how women and men are the same. Grin

The actual answer is on the second part.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 07/01/2019 15:13

Right. Sorry. Late here and tired of the same arguments about how it’s my chooooicccce and it’s aaaaaart and self woooooorth.

ethelfleda · 07/01/2019 15:26

I admire women who don’t care and don’t wear make up. I wear very little on some days of the week but I am aware that I am socially conditioned to do so and it’s depressing.

Ollivander84 · 07/01/2019 15:40

Some days I wear v little, some days I wear a shit load. I don't want to go out with massive visible dark circles and acne so I cover it up

Fresta · 07/01/2019 15:48

OH FGS! It's not about getting a man! If that's what you took from the point I tried to make then this discussion is wasted on you!

Fieldsgrowingdark · 07/01/2019 16:02

Is the world gone mad???

9 year olds spending £52 on top end eye shadow?

When did this all come about? What a depressing world, if that's the way children are being brought up.

Mylittlepea · 07/01/2019 16:12

I think that is a crazy amount of money for a 9 year old to spend on make up. My DD is 13 and wears a small amount of make up at the weekend and for parties but she gets stuff from Superdrug.
If she asked to spend that kind of money regardless of whether it’s hers or not, I’d talk to her about the value of money, not always following the crowd and how much stuff she could get for £52....

BusterGonad · 07/01/2019 16:15

I know it's not about getting a man, I know the history of make up, but I also think in this day and age it's personal choice.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 07/01/2019 16:16

buster why don’t men make that choice then?

leaveby10 · 07/01/2019 16:24

I think my ds would wear make up if it was more socially acceptable for male teens.

Well said it is all about standards but I think we might be piss* in the wind with most on this board we are just looked at as being stupid old woman !! But I’m in the Helen Mirron camp I still love to look my best as did my mother and my Grandmother. So I slap on the war paint (not every day)!wear matching underwear !! still dress very well and usually get taken for a decade younger then I am!! not because of an man just because I like to and that’s how I was raised always be the best you can in appearance and in the way you treat others. But I think that we are getting off topic this is about a nine year old and make up not us old girls. And I have already said what I would do about that early on today

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 07/01/2019 16:32

and usually get taken for a decade younger then I am

well thank God, imagine if you actually looked your age, that just wouldn’t be right, would it?

Think of your standards, ladies, no one wants to see your actual face.

Giantcatbear · 07/01/2019 16:35

I would let her buy it. I think she'll learn a little bit about buyers remorse after she realises she could have done a lot more with her money and make up is quite borning...

Lweji · 07/01/2019 16:47

wear matching underwear !!

How does that help you look 10 years younger?

clarissathepinotgrigiofan12345 · 07/01/2019 16:50

hello
It's important that children these days find out that if they complain enough, they will get what they want. That's what the spirit of Christmas is all about anyway, isn't it????
Sometimes, it is true that you have to say no though.

My Darling Alice wanted to study Music at (hopefully) oxford, but I convinced her to do medicine instead. She hates science, but I want her to get the highest salary possible so she can find a nice husband/wife one day!

clarissathepinotgrigiofan12345 · 07/01/2019 16:51

AIBU???

No there is nothing wrong with getting old in fact I’m very happy with my age!! But that does not mean that I don’t want to look good !! or is it only the young who can look nice!! Should I just give up and say I’m old now so I will get fat stop going to the gym!! stop getting my hair done , wear sh*t cloths throw personal groomng out the window because if I don’t im obviously a shallowly woman!! Wise up !!

Lweji · 07/01/2019 16:58

Nanalisa60

Eh? The comment was about wanting to look younger. Nothing wrong with looking our age.
But we can still look good regardless.

Nanalisa60 · 07/01/2019 17:03

Lweji

Wearing matching underwear doesn’t make you look any younger!! It just makes you feel good!! But if you don’t want to wear matching underwear fair play to you that’s your choice!! But if you do and you like all the other stuff that makes you feel good that’s also your choice. If we were all the same the world would be a very boring place!!

Nanalisa60 · 07/01/2019 17:14

Lweji

I don’t want to look younger then my age!! But I’m not going to lie if someone says I can’t belive that’s your age I don’t get upset I’m quite chuffed!! And I think that age is just a number I knew 20 year olds that were old before there time !! and I have meet 90 year olds that are still like 30 years olds inside !! it your outlook on life!! But as I said this thread is about a nine year old and make up not a old woman like me!!

MsHopey · 07/01/2019 18:05

@MrsFoxPlus4

I don't know whether to be grateful or annoyed at the tip off about revolutions make up sale.
I'm £37 down but have ordered 6 full palettes, 5 individual eye shadows, a brow kit, a high lighter and 4 lipsticks.
Much better bargain than ONE James Charles palette.
It's gonna feel like Christmas when it arrives!
I've decided, I'm just grateful 😁 thanks for the tip!

TheLastNigel · 07/01/2019 19:10

My 13 year old is desperate for the bloody thing. It's mad to me (and I love make up and all that schizzle) but it's her money to do with what she chooses I guess.

Ladymacmuff · 07/01/2019 20:08

DD, 11, is quite into makeup but not necessarily for its intended purposes. She has just stolen my naice eyeshadow palette, painted her whole face a gruesome dark blue and come into the bathroom with her hair hanging in front of her face looking like an extra from The Haunting of Hill House. Frightened the bloody life out of me and DS (who was in the bath)!

Children should not be allowed expensive makeup for this reason alone!

hartof · 07/01/2019 21:13

My 11 year old has really fallen out with me tonight because I said she shouldn't use her birthday money for this. She's shown absolutely no interest in makeup, she's a bit of a tomboy and all of a sudden she wants this. None of her friends have it apparently she wants it because she's been watching him on YouTube.

I've told her I'll take her to Superdrug or she can use mine ( I have a lot, including Morphe palettes who make the JC palette) I just don't want her spending so much on something she doesn't know how to use and I feel she's too young to wear eyeshadow. DH says it's her money, his SD used to stop him buying what he wants and we shouldn't stop her.

This preteen stage is very confusing!

Beerflavourednipples · 07/01/2019 21:13

Yes, it is funny how men don't wear makeup 'for themselves'. Just like they don't need to take their clothes off for money to feel 'empowered' etc.
