to mourn the "death" of my ladyshave.... Whats your oldest belonging?

Honestly... this is lighthearted and not some weirdo fetish...

I have the fortune to have the cupboard over the loo. I have 1 cupboard... HE has 2 Confused so my stuff is just kinda shoved in.

Got something out the other day and my ladyshave... which is antique I might add - promptly fell down the loo. I grabbed it out - and immediately binned it... Having images of being electrocuted whilst trimming didn't fill me with confidence.

I bought that beaut aged 12/13 when my Mum finally agreed I could buy one. I had fluffy, downy, hairy legs. I wasn't allowed razors but could buy a ladyshave as it was safer.

I've had that thing for 20 years.... 20!

sniff

I now need to find another... replacement... that doesn't leave stubble behind!

What's your oldest item?

I have Tupperware my Mum used to put my packed lunch in and a 'Sarah kay' duvet cover which was my first ever duvet (oh the joy of no more blankets!! Now it is SOOO soft and faded but still lovely) both c.early 1980s!
I also have a pink T-shirt I wore throughout uni in1990s, not only survived over 20 years but more impressively it survived 4 years of uni laundry machines!

CheeseAndBeans · 03/01/2019 22:00

I have a mug that my mum bought me when I left home 19 years ago for uni. Still going strong, but no one else is allowed to use it!
And a peter rabbit egg cup that was given to me for my christening 38 years ago.
Up until about a month ago I still used the radio alarm clock that I had in my teenage bedroom in the 90's. Was pretty gutted when that gave up!

Time40 · 03/01/2019 22:00

Cjt, thanks for the photo. She is lovely - well worth saving.

Personally, I think design gets uglier and uglier. Older and vintage things are almost always nicer.

arranbubonicplague · 03/01/2019 22:08

DH has a melamine cereal bowl that has been in virtually daily use since he was 4 years old. We're not far off the half century for that tho' he is gutted that 6 years ago the melamine handle finally parted from the special spoon that he'd always used with the bowl.

Babyliss hairdryer circa 1992 - oldest gadget I possess. Also have a miss selfridge top bought new in 1988. Still using both items and would never part with either.

brizzledrizzle · 03/01/2019 22:43

A book that is about 130 years old.

itwaseverthus · 03/01/2019 22:57

I still have my gran's Sona Percolator so it must be around 45 years old now and still going strong! Also her electric carving knife, although that scares me somewhat.

A trip down memory lane here shows Argos was selling it for £2.45 in 1973. issuu.com/retromash/docs/argos-no01-1973-74

We have many things that are really old but sticking to things that were bought new, my amplifier is 37 years old this year. It's seen some hard partying over the years!

tor8181 · 03/01/2019 23:17

my bed,as of today im in a new bed

im 38 soon and have had it since i was 14 so 24 years

at the time is was a few thousand pound as it was a very thick deluxe mattress

its still nothing wrong with it base is fine, mattress perfect i just wanted to upgrade from a queen to a super king

its only a mattress but it has so many memories in it,its been to 4 houses including my very first flat at 20

conceived 2 kids on it,spent my first pregnancy in it(bedridden because of severe morning sickness)went through 2 labours on it, both kids slept in in from birth(youngest still with me) and many Christmas morning memories(we all got in to one bed to open stocking before coming down)

i haven't got rid of it as its in the other room(partners sleeping on it) but apart from holidays it the only bed ive slept in all my adult life

My prestige lifetime pans have been in almost constant daily use since I got them in 1986. 33 years!
Unfortunately, the copper bottom on the largest one parted company from the pan recently. Pan still usable even though it looks a bit manky on the bottom.

I still have my school skirt which I bought from top shop when I was 13/14, it’s a stretchy one and it still fits (despite me not being the size of a 13 year old any more).

OP, agree with trying to rescue the lasyshave, these things were built to last it it might be fine. If it’s not then buy a new one, most of them are now waterproof and can be used in the shower.

tillytrotter1 · 04/01/2019 10:40

50th wedding anniversary last year, still using the ironing board we got as a present, gone through quite a few covers though.
I also have a cafetiere which we bought 40+ years ago overseas, before they were common in the UK.

I love to watch our grandchildren playing with the toys their mothers played with, we kept all the FP stuff boxed up and moved them around the world with us, some of it must be almost 40 years old.

babybunny123 · 04/01/2019 11:12

I have a blue plastic comb from Avon that I have had for at least 20 years, would go mad if I lost it and also one of those fuzz away's the original one, to get bobbles off your jumpers. It still works a treat but is very loud and requires one of those huge batteries.

PumpkinPie2016 · 04/01/2019 11:22

I have a pink teddy that my dad bought for me on the day I was born. I am now 32 and still have it Smile

I would be devastated if anything happened to it - in fact, DH almost ended up under the patio when he suggested taking it to the charity shop AngryGrin

littlemisscomper · 04/01/2019 11:56

I use my Great Gran's baking bowls. She died years before I was born but I love he because she and my mum loved each other so much, and I've heard so many stories about her. Using the bowls helps me feel close to her. I don't use her bone-handled knives though as they freak me out! I'm not sure how old the bowls are, maybe pushing 100? I'll have to ask my mum.

MaudesMum · 04/01/2019 12:02

I have a Le Creuset casserole which I inherited from my grandmother when she died in 1994. I don't know when she bought it. Its a bit chipped but still going strong...

Jocasta2018 · 04/01/2019 14:31

I've got some family furniture that dates back to 1930s. Friends take the piss (too cheap to buy new!) but the wooden chest of drawers is as solid as a rock and both my grandmother and great uncle spent their first nights asleep in one of the smaller drawers!
Plus a rug brought back from the 'Far East' by my grandfather when he was in the Navy - he died in 1940.
From my drawer-dozing grandmother, I've got a set of 1960s Salter scales that are still accurate and there's an orange peg bag from that era as well.

Exmouthlady · 05/01/2019 17:28

I had an electric carving knife as a wedding gift in 1984, it's still going strong and works as well now as it did when new.

babyno5 · 05/01/2019 17:52

So sorry for you loss OP 💐.
Mine is a 1pt Pyrex measuring jug bought when I left for uni 30 years ago. Ok so you can’t read the measurements any more but it’s still MY measuring jug. OH thought he was being “helpful” buying me a new one. FFS if I need help I’ll bloody ask for it arsehole 😂😂
That ole measuring jug has seen me through some lean times (measuring the water for Tesco branded super noodles. Some not so lean times - measuring the cream for a smoked salmon terrine 😂😂. The kids joke they’ll bury it with me 😂😂

RandomMess · 05/01/2019 18:18

A top my Mum bought in the 60s that I acquired in late 80s...

insancerre · 05/01/2019 18:23

Today I found my thermos I used to use to take soup to school in 1979
I also use saucepans every day that we got as a wedding present in 1987. They had a lifetime guarantee

broadsreach · 05/01/2019 18:23

My Sharp microwave oven is 40 years old and still going strong. My Philips Tumble Driver is around the same age, and again still working. They used to make things to last!

Thewifipasswordis · 05/01/2019 18:30

My Kettle my Nan bought me when I bought my first home (at 19 just before the crash 🙄) so 13/14yrs? But it blew up on New Years day 😥

If anyone has a Breville Spectra lying around please can I have it? 😭 my Nan died about 6m after I moved in and she'd never been over to my new place as she was too frail in the last year of her life 😟 (she died at 94)

cherrybath · 05/01/2019 18:32

I've still got the bread knife which I bought from Woolworths in Oxford Street in summer 1970 when I went to university. The handle has faded a bit but its still cutting well.
