to mourn the "death" of my ladyshave.... Whats your oldest belonging?

Honestly... this is lighthearted and not some weirdo fetish...

I have the fortune to have the cupboard over the loo. I have 1 cupboard... HE has 2 Confused so my stuff is just kinda shoved in.

Got something out the other day and my ladyshave... which is antique I might add - promptly fell down the loo. I grabbed it out - and immediately binned it... Having images of being electrocuted whilst trimming didn't fill me with confidence.

I bought that beaut aged 12/13 when my Mum finally agreed I could buy one. I had fluffy, downy, hairy legs. I wasn't allowed razors but could buy a ladyshave as it was safer.

I've had that thing for 20 years.... 20!

sniff

I now need to find another... replacement... that doesn't leave stubble behind!

What's your oldest item?

I have a Braun electric coffee grinder which I bought in 1987. Still going strong.

awesmum · 03/01/2019 14:51

Bedding my mum bought in 1979, still use it. I have my grandmothers dining table from 1940 something and my great grandfathers mandolin and barometer so from 1800's sometime.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/01/2019 14:53

Not my oldest thing, because I've still got eg my Peter Rabbit mug from when I was a child sitting in the bookcase next to me, and the 1940s electric kettle in working order that I used at work until 1990 - but my oldest that I still use: a heated "hostess tray" my parents gave me almost 50 years ago, which is perfect for heating plates and keeping gravy and sprouts warm for Christmas dinner.

elliejjtiny · 03/01/2019 14:57

Oldest thing is my great grandmother's engagement ring from about 1920. Oldest practical thing that is used regularly is my guitar that I bought 2nd hand in 1998 and a mug from 2001. I also have a pair of black velvet trousers in the loft that I bought with my babysitting money in 1999. I am determined to lose 12 stone and get back into them one day.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/01/2019 15:00

Are we taking "oldest" as "absolute oldest" - eg the brooch belonging to my great grandmother dating originally from about 1850 but which I didn't "inherit" until about 25 years ago, or "oldest in my possession" eg something I've had 40 years but was new to me?

Mattttttt · 03/01/2019 15:03

We still regularly use a Moulinex cake/food mixer that my grandmother (93) bought for my Mum (73) as a present when she left home - it's at least 50 years old and still works perfectly. They don't make stuff like that any more.

Mumof1andacat · 03/01/2019 15:05

We now have a set of Pyrex over dishes that were bought as a wedding present to my Mil in 1975. Nothing wrong with them. Her grandma got them for her so nice to still have them

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/01/2019 15:08

I am getting a new fridge freezer tomorrow to replace my 17yo one. The old one still works but every single shelf and drawer has snapped and broken, meaning my food is all piled up in the middle. Repacement parts can no longer be bought so a new one is heading my way. I hate waste and found this really hard to do.
My 21yo microwave is also going tomorrow but is not being replaced. It's been cutting out after a few seconds for months and I hardly ever use it so I don't feel too bad about that.
The oldest thing I own, apart from antiques, is my teddy, who is a couple of years older than me so must be nearly 50. He looks more like 150, bless him.

Alabasterangel6 · 03/01/2019 15:09

Grandmas kenwood. With attachments. It was a wedding gift to her in 1955! Replaced the belt once. Sounds like a jet engine landing but it’s as solid as a rock.

Lexilooo · 03/01/2019 15:10

Yesterday I wore a sweatshirt originally purchased from primark circa 1992 and in regular use ever since (Mum got me one with growing room!). I reckon that is outstanding value for money since it cost less than a fiver!!

HariboLecter · 03/01/2019 15:12

@cjt110 try putting it in a Tupperware filled with rice, with the lid on.
Works for phones Grin

BrokenWing · 03/01/2019 15:19

I still have and use my braun silk-epil. It's the original one from 1989 so 30 years old next year!!! 😱

Also have the original GHD straighteners, but not sure how old they are but definitely pre ds so at least 15 years old. The cable needs replaced (held together in parts by electrical tape), but otherwise used daily and work as good as new!

Doingthedo · 03/01/2019 15:21

my trusty duck hairdryer from when I was a teenager...so over 30 years old and still going strong! they're classed as vintage on eBay... !

smallandgrumpy · 03/01/2019 15:22

My parents got a Panasonic Genius microwave as a wedding gift and 35 years later it's still going strong! I moved out four years ago and took it with me, I will be gutted when it finally dies

CallMeSirShotsFired · 03/01/2019 15:23

I have a mug that I used to keep at my nans house, so it must be about 40 years old. But now I keep it safe, I'm not really using it.

A teddy I made in textiles age 11.

A favourite evening top that has not aged once but but I must have had since the early 2000s?

I could go on...I have loads of old stuff, I'm a real miser of things!

takitaki · 03/01/2019 15:24

I've got an ironing board that's about 40 years old! Still use it 😅

I've also still got the golliwog my grandma gave me when I was born. He's almost 36 years old now and is starting to look a bit tatty, but I love him!

Bluelady · 03/01/2019 15:25

I've got a little basin that was my gran's, it must be at least 70 years old now. It's still in regular use.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 03/01/2019 15:26

I still use a casserole dish my mum got as a wedding present. She'd have been married 56 years this year. Still works and is microwave & dishwasher safe (despite predating either of those new dangled devices).

CallMeSirShotsFired · 03/01/2019 15:27

I also have my stereo hifi. Are you ready to be impressed?

  • 7 cd player stacker
  • Double cassette deck
  • FM tuner
  • 2 speakers

...All for the bargain price of £300-something which I got on credit about 25 years and a dozen house moves ago.

It still sits on top of my fridge in my kitchen and faithfully plays radio for hours on end.

CutesyUserName · 03/01/2019 15:34

My 31-year-old Dualit toaster is still in almost daily use.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/01/2019 15:44

I've got the blanket that was on my pram as a baby, that have also been on my mum in HER pram when SHE was a baby.

cjt110 · 03/01/2019 15:45

I really do think the old shit lasts longer... My MIL has a slow cooker which she's had for 47 years

@HariboLecter Good tip... discard the rice after...right? Envy

Or feed rice to DH til he gets rid of all things yellow?

TooManyPaws · 03/01/2019 16:06

I have my baby light from beside my cot, my teddy, a Noddy eggcup, my Bunnikins china, and my christening silver cutlery as well as a silver napkin ring with my name on it from my christening. Oh, and my silver baby bracelet. Plus loads of inherited stuff.

The oldest thing that I bought that I can remember is my ironing board from the early 1980s. I regularly use the bread knife that my parents were given for their wedding in 1946.

cjt110 · 03/01/2019 16:08

@HariboLecter Ahahahaha... Yes... Only the bin to go now. Wink
