That I've had numerous private school children aged 15/16 ask me when my 6 week summer holiday starts.. At work?

Am I missing something? Do private school children get enrolled into jobs where they keep their school half terms as a employment contract?

Why DONT I get a 6 week holiday anymore? It's so unfair!

I hate january.

Do you look young? Maybe they think you're a student?

Bluntness100 · 02/01/2019 22:36

Huh? Kids think you work in a school?

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 22:37

I don't think so, I haven't been asked for ID in a good 2/3 years. I've always been told I look older than I am despite being short.

I also work in dentistry so not sure I could be confused as a student in my job? But anything possible.

I was half sad that I don't get those sorts of holidays anymore, and half thinking they have such a big shock coming when they eventually do have to get a job and they don't get 6 weeks off anymore! Surely that's common knowledge.

Maybe I'll start a petitionnto have a compulsory 3 week holiday during the summer in all full-time jobs. ;)

I have no clue what you're talking about. All kids gets summer holidays.

Are you drunk?

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 22:40

@bluntness100.
Sorry I made it confusing.
I don't work in a school, I work in a dental practice, but we have school children come in to my place of work. It's often when working out appointments they ask when our summer holidays are (expecting us to be closed for 6 weeks I think!)

This makes no sense

brizzledrizzle · 02/01/2019 22:41

Private schools don't get six weeks off in summer it's more like 8 or 9

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 22:42

@bluntness.
Basically, I work, I'm not a school child. But a few school children have made it clear to me they don't know that when you leave school and get a job you no longer get a 6 week break in the summer and half term holidays.

OP posts:
SB1013 · 02/01/2019 22:42

Why would they be asking you that in January for a start?

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 22:44

@brizzledrizzle
What?! 8 or 9 weeks off, that's mad!

Numerous Private school children?

Asking about Summer hols in January?

Not realising the rest of the world doesn't shut down for Summer?

Ok then Confused

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 22:45

@sb1013
Booking 6 monthly brings us to around about summer holidays :)

I think you’ve been a bit flexible with the wording tbh. Asking when your summer holidays are isn’t the same as expecting you to be shut for 6 weeks. Some businesses do shut for a week or a fortnight over the summer.

What did these children actually say?

cate16 · 02/01/2019 22:46

Just got it! Yes I don't think some of them do realise that when you work it usually for 52 weeks a year.

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 22:47

@WorraLiberty.
Precisely! I don't remember ever not knowing that when you leave school you don't get half terms anymore, it's just work work work. I cannot believe some don't know that. Poor kiddos.

No. Just different. Standard here in NI.

FilledSoda · 02/01/2019 22:47

I've never had a teenager ask me anything like this . That's really odd.

SB1013 · 02/01/2019 22:49

If they genuinely think you get 6 weeks off work over the summer then they are in for a shock. I'm surprised if they do as most kids attending private school will have parents that work! Maybe they worded it wrong or they were making a joke

Justajot · 02/01/2019 22:50

It's hard enough to get a school holiday appointment with our dentist that I wouldn't be surprised if he does have a 6 week break in the summer.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2019 22:50

What does it have to do with them being private school children though?

Honestly, I've never known any teenager or child from any school to think businesses shut for the Summer holidays?

Where do they think the food shopping comes from?

Where do they think their parents go instead of to work?

It doesn't make sense.

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 22:51

For example, when booking a young lady in and I offered her an appointment during her summer holiday, she looked at me a little confused and said "so when do you break up for summer holiday?" I just said we don't have half term breaks, a little astounded she thought we did. She just looked a bit shocked and said " Oh okay then" and that was it really. But it got me thinking lolGrin

That I've had numerous private school children aged 15/16 ask me when my 6 week summer holiday starts.. At work?

Eh? How do you know they are private schooled children?

Also I've never met a 15/16 year old who doesn't know or understand that 6 weeks summer hols doesn't happen when at work. 13 year old DS knows this and pretty sure he has for a few years.

I'm confused

yodelsay · 02/01/2019 22:52

Why single out private school kids?!

They may ask so that their appt doesn't clash with holidays or to make sure they make appts when they aren't at school as 15/16 yr olds will probs be doing GCSEs before the end of June and won't be able to take time off!

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 02/01/2019 22:52

But surely they must have noticed that their parents and other adults they know don't get 6 weeks off for summer every year?

Unless all their parents and family and friends are teachers or unemployed. Which isn't that likely if they're all in private schools.

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 22:53

Maybe they are just asking if I have any summer holidays planned.. and now I look like a prisoner in my own workplace that can never go home.. ShockBlush
