That I've had numerous private school children aged 15/16 ask me when my 6 week summer holiday starts.. At work?

Am I missing something? Do private school children get enrolled into jobs where they keep their school half terms as a employment contract?

Why DONT I get a 6 week holiday anymore? It's so unfair!

I hate january.

My mistake.. I thought numerous just meant more than one?

I haven't called anyone stupid. I was just shocked. I also haven't bashes private school children.

It is a fact, they are private school children.

I did not know that people didn't get 6 weeks off work when I was a child. I was about 8 though. I was shocked when my parents told me (My parents were divorced, split custody and mum worked weekends while we were with my dad and vice versa).
But at 15, thats odd thinking.

purplegoat · 02/01/2019 23:10

My nephew asked me this all the time until a couple of years ago (he's now 16). He couldn't grasp that most working people don't get huge amounts of holiday as his dad took ill health retirement a few years ago. My sister (his other aunt) hasn't had a job since he was born. His grandparents are dead or retired and his mum (my sister) works full time but takes half weeks in the summer hols to manage it.
He's not at private school either.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 02/01/2019 23:11

Relatively new. Is that obvious?

Have you checked with your employer that there isn’t a break over the summer? If 3 of these patients all asked the same question, and they’re all 15/16 I assume have been attending your dentist for a few years they may know something about the holidays that you haven’t yet learned. Also, it’s quite obvious you are unacquainted with these strange, alien Wink boarding school children which indicates you’re new to dealing with them.

Sparklesocks · 02/01/2019 23:12

Is this just a humble brag about how young you look Grin

But Yes very odd indeed. Seems weird for kids to ask about it in that context.

SadOtter · 02/01/2019 23:12

If they are boarders do they maybe not realise you aren't connected to the school? I mean I know the boarding school near me has a school nurse and a particular doctor who has a slot set aside for the school, so wouldn't book appointments in that time (because most boarders go home for summer) do they maybe think its a similar deal with you?

ShortandSweet96 · 02/01/2019 23:12

I don't want to engage this conversation anymore. I feel like people have taken out of context. I wasn't trying to be mean at all and now I feel bad that it's came across as horrible.

Noshowofmojo · 02/01/2019 23:12

If they're boarders are they having their appointments now, in the Christmas break? Have they not gone home to their families? Most private schools won't go back until next week.

TSSDNCOP · 02/01/2019 23:13

Yes you were. The fact is you’ve been shown to be really quite unkind about children you treat.

bevelino · 02/01/2019 23:14

OP, this thread is a bit silly, but light relief after watching Luther.

Yabbers · 02/01/2019 23:15

Lots of places shut in the school holidays. And DD thinks some places shut in the summer holidays 😉

Not sure why the fact that a couple of children from private schools made a comment like this is relevant.

Holidayshopping · 02/01/2019 23:17

You were bitching on an open forum about a group of children you treat. It’s difficult to see how you weren’t being mean Confused.

MissLadyM · 02/01/2019 23:20

Either the kids are thick or you're pissed!

Gwenhwyfar · 02/01/2019 23:20

"Don't most politicians attend private school? They usually take summer recess."

They're supposed to be working in their constituency for some of that time and take the same amount of holidays as other people. They don't just work in the House of Commons.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/01/2019 23:24

Not sure what's gone wrong here OP. You weren't being bitchy. It was a funny story about teenagers. You weren't 'singling out' private school children - you just mentioned they were private school children because they were. I don't see why you should have to not mention it.
Some people are just itching for a fight for some reason.

SadOtter · 02/01/2019 23:28

Unless they haven't gone home, some boarders don't go home for Christmas, particularly if their parents aren't in the UK.

@ShortandSweet96 people have taken it out of context because you mentioned private school and that's a MN no no. It might actually be worth checking that your employer does offer summer holiday appointments to students registered with a school address, if its not NHS and they only live there in term time it might well be a far less stupid question than you thought.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/01/2019 23:28

No you must have misunderstood them. It's not possible that 15 and 16 year olds think all places of work shut for summer holidays.
You're on the wind up!

TSSDNCOP · 02/01/2019 23:28

Ok, let’s see if this can be clearer whilst explaining why I’m not spoiling for a fight but am really dismayed by this thread.

Child of 15/16 goes to HCP for dental treatment. Never really very nice at best, and they’re presumably without their parents being at boarding school.

They have a conversation with the nice lady at the dentist which gets a bit confusing and they mis-speak.

Then....

ILoveMaxiBondi · 02/01/2019 23:38

Children/teens don’t normally think of holidays when booking appointments so the fact that 3 of them did makes me think there must be a reason. I would check with your employer what the summer schedule is.

Hollyhobbi · 02/01/2019 23:43

Guess how many weeks the secondary schools in Ireland are shut for in the Summer? 12! Not to mention 2 weeks off at Easter and Christmas and week long mid term breaks every term. They'd have to change dentists over the summer!

Jenasaurus · 02/01/2019 23:47

I think Op is getting a hard time, in my understanding its a light hearted thread and not intentionally bitchy as implied

Ilove · 02/01/2019 23:53

Christ. She wasn’t being mean. If you don’t deal day to day with kids rivalry educated (i do) then you will not understand

And yes they can be that blind to the real world!!!

Ilove · 02/01/2019 23:53

*privately

DeepanKrispanEven · 02/01/2019 23:54

I don't understand why you say a 6 week holiday is a half term break? Usually half term is half way through the term and is only one week, or at most two.
