That I've had numerous private school children aged 15/16 ask me when my 6 week summer holiday starts.. At work?

Am I missing something? Do private school children get enrolled into jobs where they keep their school half terms as a employment contract?

Why DONT I get a 6 week holiday anymore? It's so unfair!

I hate january.

OP posts:

Must be the most thinly veiled attempt to bash private school children that I've ever seen! Grin Epic fail, OP, you've made yourself look a bit silly.

If they were all a certain nationality would you have mentioned that too? No, of course not (unless you're racist and making a shite point about race/intelligence). You mentioned the private school thing for a reason and don't like being called out on it.

Blueemeraldagain · 03/01/2019 00:11

I teach in a secondary school and whilst the kids mostly know you don’t get 6 weeks summer holiday alongside everything else whilst working 90% of their jaws drop when they find out they will probably be entitled to less, legally, than that over the whole year when they get a job.

We have a very high level of parent unemployment at our school.

Even private schools don't get a six week half term break. I don't understand the OP

wowsertrousers · 03/01/2019 02:12

Not sure i get all the sneering at the OP. It's not the most hardhitting post I've ever read on mumsnet... but so what. It's probably just a breakdown in communication between the OP and the patients but if i encountered any 15 or 16 year olds who seemed to think that people get lengthy breaks from work over the summer I'd be similarly bemused. Not as bemused as i am at the suggestion that the OP is making this all up though. I'm sure her imagination could do better if she was going to make something up. The privately educated bit is a bit of an irrelevance but again so what. Sometimes shock horror when telling a story people include details that aren't central to the plot. If i say that someone's wearing a red jumper it doesn't necessarily mean I'm passing judgment on the fact that the jumper is red... it's just a statement of fact. Also I've seen people and establishments increasingly using 'half term' to mean end of term holidays - no idea why as half term is obviously the holiday in the middle of a term... but why such vitriol over such a mundane thing??

Weird weird OP. Just weird. Weird weird weird.

Bluntness100 · 03/01/2019 07:38

One of the weirder threads on here. My daughter was privately educated, not her or one of her friends thought everything shut for the summer, because, you know, they grew up going to things like the dentist, the doctors, or the shops, during the summer.

I'd agree, a thinly veiled attempt to bash privately educated kids for not living in the real world. That back fired spectacularly.

Stay off the vino op or think it through and write it better next time.🤣

Holidayshopping · 03/01/2019 07:54

OP thinks 3 private school children aren’t sure if the dentist is closed for 6 Weeks. I’m a bit confused why they specifically said 6 weeks though as private schools summers are usually far longer.

OP has no idea what a half term is.

Both could probably do with being a bit more informed about schools holidays, I guess.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 03/01/2019 09:12

The kids didn’t say 6 weeks. OP embellished that part then backtracked.

One child asked when they broke up for summer holiday. meaning “when do you close for summer holidays” (because summer was the time OP was booking the appointment for) but used “break up” as that’s the language used in schools when referring to school closing for summer holidays. This does not at all equate to the child thinking all adults get 6 weeks off work for summer.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/01/2019 09:32

You've nailed it Max.

Bluntness100 · 03/01/2019 09:52

It is rather comical though. Yes, 16 year olds who are privately educated think the country shuts down for six weeks in the summer. They can't go anywhere or do anything cos everything is shut.

I'm betting the op woke up this morning happy this was anonymous. 🤣

ExFury · 03/01/2019 12:06

I would have assumed they thought you were a community/schools dentist. The one my kids see isn’t open in the school summer holidays except for emergencies.

It’s an absolute pain in the arse.

Pachyderm1 · 03/01/2019 12:13

Based on how confusing this post is, I expect you’re misunderstanding the kids.

Expatworkingmum · 03/01/2019 12:14

I was asked this by (state school) kids when I used to mentor teenagers!

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 03/01/2019 12:54

No idea what you are rambling on about OP, and TBH I don't think I have the energy to stay with it and try to figure it out.

If you are a dentist, I would have thought you would be able to string a few sentences together so that they made sense, otherwise I find it rather worrying.

Or is it because you are in fact on holiday from school and bored?

cakedup · 03/01/2019 13:25

Fucks sake, OP is getting a hard time here, really unnecessary. I don't suppose a lot of you thread bashers have children that attend private school? Can't see any other reason as to why the OP is being picked apart. And no - don't explain it to me. I've seen the explanations, I just think many of you are jumping to conclusions as to the OP's intent.

OP, I try to remind my DS(13) every now and again that you generally don't get school holidays off when you work - especially as I do because I work term time only!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 03/01/2019 13:26

Confused my children don’t and never have (never will) attend private school. I could still spot what OP was clumsily trying to do.

hellhavenofury · 03/01/2019 13:29

My nephew aged 6 once said to me that everyone gets summer holidays even if you are an adult. He wanted to spend the whole 6 weeks at my house! I laughed and said I wish and explained that only schools get 6 weeks off and other people have holiday allowances they can use when they like etc. Its quite common for children to think like this I think until it is explained!

CripsSandwiches · 03/01/2019 14:49

I think you're misunderstanding them. If their parents pay private school fees I doubt they're teachers themselves so won't get a long summer holiday so the kids must realise most of the world doesn't shut down for the summer.
