They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

You're not coming across well. You seem ill informed about economics and the implications of what you're suggested. You seem out of touch with the reality that many many people NEED to work weekends because they can't afford childcare or because they are studying or because they want a second job for extra income. You also aren't taking j to account that many people fly back from holidays at the weekend, so they'd arrive home and be unable to buy food (since no fresh stuff will be at home). Shutting shops at weekends is idiotic and you are making yourself out to be very poorly educated or simply lacking common sense if you cannot grasp that.

Pinkyyy · 01/01/2019 15:59

OP what world do you live in?

SprusselBrout · 01/01/2019 16:11

People from other cultures and religions celebrate New Year or major family festivals at other times during the year, you know. Also, some people don’t actually have a family to spend bank holidays with.

MudCity · 01/01/2019 16:14

Over the years I have worked in many jobs which have required working on bank holidays including retail, leisure and health care. I know the score when I apply for jobs. If I want a job which does not entail working on bank holidays then I rethink my options.

YABU.

whatsnewchoochoo · 01/01/2019 16:21

I used to work retail. I like working the bank holidays, I've never enjoyed bank holidays. I begrudge that I'm forced to take them off in my current job

Tartanwallpaper · 01/01/2019 16:23

I work in retail and have had to work every 'festive' day except Christmas day. I wish I didn't have to for minimum wage but some people rely on the money so I don't think they should be closed. However, I do think rude customers should be bloody banned because they seem to crank up the rudeness over this time of year. I've been accused of all sorts of shit , good job I've got a tough skin

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 16:31

I didn't argue for any lesuire facilities to be open on bank holidays, I did the exact opposite! Hmm

OP
do you want gyms etc to be open half day Saturday and closed on Sunday?

MrMeSeeks · 01/01/2019 16:38

I don’t think stores should be open on new years and boxing days, or at-least staff should have the choice to work those days.
Not all pay their staff extra and for some it will cost the staff money to actually be there as there’s no public transport.
For some people you when you start the job you know you will be working the hours, but for others it can ve suddenly sprung on you.

pineapple22 · 01/01/2019 16:40

OP, what do you suggest happens then, in your fantasy world, to the people who desperately want to work on these days? Who don't have family to be with and who are miserable and lonely? Should they suffer because your family members made the choice to take jobs that they knew would include bank holidays? It seems to me one side of this argument always has to be unhappy, but only one side are trying to force the other to be unhappy instead of themselves

JacquesHammer · 01/01/2019 16:41

Do you want gyms open for half day on Saturday and closed on a Sunday?

PhilomenaNewYearButterfly · 01/01/2019 16:48

UnsungHero · 01/01/2019 16:50

Jesus!! Op sounds batshit!

I'm a retail manager....worked today..... was s great day. Not very busy BUT we got so much done!! Stock worked and sorted, cleaned and prepped ready for the busy jan trading period!

TTHANK GOD for days like today!!

UnsungHero · 01/01/2019 16:52

Oh. And if your silly little campaign should succeed.... shops will be closed just like eater Sunday

But the retail staff still go in to work whilst doors are closed to the public!!!Grin

We can get soooooo much done with no customers in.

"Awesome! Can everyone please also boycott getting ill/the hospitals today so that DP (doctor) can spend it with us next year too?

Oh dear, thought not! And since he’s at work today and I have no other family close by....I’ll be going out to shop/eat!!!

Or would you rather I spent the day sat alone at home, to give ‘shop workers’ the day off OP?

😂 God I’m fed up of people thinking retail/low wage workers (this was me all through teens/uni) deserve the sodding earth!

It’s not a hard job! I think back to my days in shops and think wow- I never knew how easy I had it!!!

They don’t deserve higher wages or more days off! NHS workers/ Emergency Services/ Carers / military and similar deserve higher wages and more days off!"

WOW So in the top part of your post you see retail workers and NHS workers as the same thing...........................but then you contradict yourself when it comes to wages.

Now either retail workers are on a par with NHS workers or they are not. If its just as essential for shops to be open today as hospitals then they are on a par and should be paid the same You cant have it both ways.

FissionChips · 01/01/2019 17:03

Wow some very privelaged people on here who have no fucking idea what its like to live in the real world

Or maybe they do live in the real world and know that there are a lot of jobs that are min wage and longer hours than call centres/ shops.

Two nine hours shifts back to back when you probably sit down most of the time is nothing compared to care assistants who work 12/13 hours shifts 4 days in a row with constant movement and lifting with only a thirty min break per day.

The care homes could employ more staff to reduce the working hours but they’d wont as people want to pay as little as possible for care of their relatives.

Most low paid jobs have crap working hours .

HelenaDove · 01/01/2019 17:03

Awesome One minute retail workers are as essential as NHS workers so should suck it up

Except when it comes to wages of course then they arent the same

PhilomenaNewYearButterfly · 01/01/2019 17:04

I like having food shops open as we don't have much storage space.

CatchingBabies · 01/01/2019 17:09

If we’re boycotting then could people please not get pregnant in March also so that I can have next Christmas off?

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 17:15

i didn't need to go shopping today because I have enough food to see us until Friday. However, DS now has a friend staying so I nipped out to the co op and got him a pizza, because we have none, and he is a tricky eater due to his autism.

Thanks to everyone involved in the entire process of getting that pizza into my hand. I now have 2 happy teenagers Grin

"I’m on-call today so will get paid £100 for doing sweet FA. On the off chance the shit hits the fan though I could end up working all day and night."

Plenty of retail workers on zero hours or low hours contracts have to keep themselves available just in case they are needed so effectively on call but not being paid for being on call

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/01/2019 17:33

Two nine hours shifts back to back when you probably sit down most of the time

In supermarkets depending on your training...yes probably

In most other shops...no

FissionChips · 01/01/2019 17:39

Standing is not the same as having to practically be constantly walking, moving dead weight people about.
